Episode Transcript
[00:00:00] You know, sometimes interrogating movies for their plot and content gets a lot more confusing than it initially seems.
[00:00:11] Welcome back. This is once again your favorite movie, Deputy, though the only movie Deputy. But I am here interrogating a movie for you that is a little bit confusing. Now, the movie itself is not confusing, but depending on how you look at it, if you just focus on the one character, this is the fourth movie in the series.
[00:00:36] If you focus on the story as a whole, it's the sixth movie in the series. And if you focus on another character and another part of the storyline, it's the fifth movie in the series. Now, you're wondering what movie I'm talking about, and how can it be both the fourth or all three? How can it be the fourth, fifth, and sixth movies in a series?
[00:00:58] Well, this is gonna surprise you. I'm talking about Karate Kid Legends. Now, you may be wondering how it's getting so confusing with all of this. Well, I want to focus that this is. And this movie does have an innocent rating on this. There is nothing that would be inappropriate for younger viewers. There's mild language, but none of the big swears or anything like that. And the violence that is on screen is nothing more than martial arts. So anything other than that. So just to kind of be prepared.
[00:01:31] But I want to kind of go into this a little bit more. If you are basing your things completely off your or your ideas on Karate Kit based off Ralph Macchio, who plays Danny, then this is the fourth movie in the series, because this is the fourth one that he's appeared in.
[00:01:47] If you are focusing just on Miyagi, this is kind of the fifth movie in the series. And if you're focusing on martial arts and kind of the continued story, it's the sixth movie in the series. Now, I will be completely honest. I remember Karate Kid 1 because that came out in 1984 and Karate Kid 2, which came out in 1986. I vaguely remember Karate Kid 3, but honestly, I didn't even remember enough of the story to even attempt to do a review on it. So I am partially through watching that one again. But I've sat down and rewatched one and two, and I'm partially through three. And then I've just seen Karate Kid Legends, but then I saw that there was a next karate kid in 1994, and then there was the Karate Kid movie with jaden Smith in 2010, and. And honestly, I don't even remember either of those at all. I don't remember even hearing about them or Just the buzz about them. So I. I don't know if I was under a rock or where I was, but I really have no memory at all of that.
[00:03:04] So I will be bringing those to you in upcoming weeks, especially after I get back from Montana. And I'm going to record a few more episodes for next week for you as well.
[00:03:14] But this one I went to go see yesterday, and I was. I honestly was not sure what to expect.
[00:03:21] Obviously, Danny's all grown up. Obviously, Mr. Miyagi is no longer with us because he passed many years ago.
[00:03:28] So how does this all work? Well, in the Jaden Smith, one of the one from 2010, we kind of get to see some of the evolution of the characters.
[00:03:41] We get to see just kind of how all of this plays out. And we see Jackie Chan basically taking the role of Mr. Miyagi, except he's teaching kung fu instead of teaching karate. Now, why does that matter? Well, that's kind of a big thing because that's kind of where this movie focuses, too.
[00:04:04] You have a mom and her son.
[00:04:07] They are getting ready to start a new life in New York. And so they are moving across the ocean and from.
[00:04:15] Oh, no, from Beijing. They move from Beijing and that. They're moving to New York. Sorry, my brain blanked on that for just a second. So my apologies.
[00:04:24] And once they get to New York, they're trying to start over new. But why are they starting over new? Well, his brother is also into martial arts and unfortunately paid for it with his life because of some other things going on that the movie will explain.
[00:04:39] But so they get to New York, and the mom has made her son, has made Lee promise that he won't fight. And it's been so hard. And he kind of gets caught up in a situation where he is offered the opportunity to help teach somebody to fight. And he's like, okay, if it's not fighting, if I'm teaching somebody to fight.
[00:04:57] And so he's teaching this new friend of his kung fu.
[00:05:01] Well, this new friend of his is much older than he is, and there is a minor love interest that involves the daughter of his new friend.
[00:05:10] So that kind of carries along with that as well. And then, of course, you have the original Cobra Kai dojo that we see through the earlier movies. And this one we get the Demolition Dojo, and it's demolition mixed martial arts. So it's not just focusing on karate, it's not just focusing on kung fu.
[00:05:29] And of course, it comes to, like, a big championship, big fight, blah, blah, blah. I'm sure you know how it ends because it's one of the Karate Kid movies. And these always kind of have that hero happy ending.
[00:05:41] I'm not gonna ruin it and say, tell you exactly what happens. But in order to get ready for the fight, he not just knowing kung fu is not enough. He has to know karate as well.
[00:05:54] And so this Bruce.
[00:05:57] Not Bruce, Jackie Chan. I don't know why I keep wanting to say Bruce Lee. I know that's not right. But Jackie Chan was a friend of Mr. Miyagi's and so he travels out all the way to Los Angeles to try to recruit Danny because Danny was basically Lee is to Jackie. Lee's character, Jackie Chan's character as Danny was to Miyagi. And so that's the importance. And so it ends up taking both a combination of kung fu and karate to succeed at this match. Only it's not going to be that simple. There's a lot more to this.
[00:06:33] Now, these stories. I honestly, I'm. I'm glad I did not pay this close of attention to movies when I was younger.
[00:06:41] And there's just things that I'm just getting caught up in, even with the first movies that have been just. Oh, it's just kind of sticking in my brain. And I can't wait to talk to you about some of these things that are happening.
[00:06:56] On a side note, today is a very important day. It is the. My husband's birthday. So happy birthday, sweetheart. But back to the review on that.
[00:07:07] But it just kind of takes you all over the place. So I am giving this an innocent rating. And the score I'm giving Karate Kid Legends might surprise you. It's not quite as good as the original Karate Kid, but it's slightly better than some of the other ones. So I am coming in at just a 6 out of 10 on the Deputy scale, which, as you know, it's not a bad score.
[00:07:30] That is good story.
[00:07:32] Some.
[00:07:33] It's got some problems, it's got some flaws. And that really kind of summarizes where this is it because it's dealing with trauma from the past. It's dealing with trying to move forward and getting caught up in the middle.
[00:07:49] Just. Just where you're just not sure how to move on from something that has changed your life. Like if you some. If you've experienced something that has changed you to your very core, how do you move on from that? Where do you even begin to move on from that? This addresses that and so many other very similar type things of staying true to oneself and staying true to what's kind of going on not only around you, but to be prepared for things that can come up in the future.
[00:08:25] Now, all of that being said, this one is a little bit of a cross between the original Karate Kid and Cobra Kai.
[00:08:35] Now, you're probably wondering if you see if we get to see Johnny in this movie. Well, you know what? I'm not going to tell you that. You're going to have to find out for yourself.
[00:08:43] But I will say that there is a certain person that makes an appearance in this one that will definitely leave you with a smile on your face.
[00:08:53] Now, hopefully that'll create enough buzz to at least create some curiosity.
[00:08:58] As always, I'm hoping that I am helping you with your movie decisions at least a little bit. Whether it's for you or for loved ones, etc. And whether you want to go see this in the theater or whether you want to wait for instant video, that's completely up to you. Or if these don' your interest at all, that's completely fine too. But these movies definitely have a following and they have a niche going all the way back to my generation. I am a proud Gen Xer and we grew up with the whole Karate Kid idea. I mean, I was only 10 when the first movie came out. Yes, I know how badly that ages me. But yeah, it was really sad that I didn't realize that this was the basically we're six movies into the whole Karate Kid ideas and that just blew my mind. So if that surprised you as well, like subscribe and share. And as always, I will be back soon. Bye bye.
