[00:00:00] Speaker A: Hello my friends and welcome back to Movie Deputy Reviews where we are talking about. That may have confused some of you if you are listening in on the podcast but if you are on our YouTube channel, you know the reason why I am shushing myself because today we are talking about a movie that is has silent in the title. But there is the movie is not as quiet as it seems. We are actually talking about the 2006 Silent Hill movie. If you've never heard of it, don't feel bad. You would have really had to be a gamer or in the gaming community of some sort to have really been familiar with this because there have been multiple Silent Hill video games even before the movie came out. And then when the movie came out in 2006 and it very much played out like a video game. And we're going to be getting into a little bit more of that. I want to start off with saying I am giving Silent Hill a guilty, guilty verdict basically. And you may be wondering but why? And we're going to be getting into that a little bit more. It's just there is a lot of intensity. So even if you have younger age kids who may be very familiar with the video game, the the movie kind of just steps it up a different level. So unless they are more familiar with stories that have to do with the gore and with just kind of the in depth stuff having to do with some of that, then yeah, you, I, I don't know what you're going to think about this one. I know what I thought about it and then on this one I really have what I thought of the movie and what I'm staying true to the deputy scale on and it's. I get my find myself conflicted on times like that where I have my opinion of like would personally rate it and then I have staying true to the deputy scale where I end up with the score. Let's go ahead and jump in with the trailer. And then of course we will talk more about the movie itself. So here we go. Sorry, it's. Pause just a second. [00:02:13] Speaker B: Here you go to sleep. You go on a little walk and sometimes you talk about a place you don't remember. That's why we're going to go there there so you can remember. [00:02:25] Speaker A: She'S a mother desperate for answers. [00:02:40] Speaker C: Sh. Somebody helps. [00:03:03] Speaker A: Christopher. [00:03:03] Speaker B: Sharon's gone. [00:03:04] Speaker A: I need your help. [00:03:05] Speaker B: I'm not okay. Please hurry. [00:03:11] Speaker A: Fire started to revolution years ago. [00:03:19] Speaker B: I don't know what's happening. Do you know what's going on here? This place is completely cut off the. [00:03:25] Speaker C: Dark One opens and closes the door to Sand Hill. [00:03:31] Speaker A: Where is she? [00:03:32] Speaker B: I'm trying to find my wife. She looks exactly like Shane. [00:03:39] Speaker C: Why? Rose. Come on, Rose. Hurry, he's coming. What's happening? Oh. [00:03:58] Speaker A: To find your daughter, you must face the darkness of hell. [00:04:01] Speaker C: It's okay, baby. Mommy's coming. [00:04:36] Speaker A: As you could probably tell by that, it's beyond a little bit creepy. It. The music in this is very phantasmagoria. Like so that's gonna really find the small niche of gamers out there that are really into those really creepy games. That. And that's one of those games that unless you've heard of it, you would have no clue what it is. But it's just a very dark game and this one has inspirations in it. It almost feels like they took inspirations from the Exorcist, a little bit from Poltergeist, a little bit from just a bunch of these types of stories like this and then these nameless, faceless monsters that it makes you wonder what they are. It's like, are they former townspeople? And this whole thing with Silent Hill is it's an abandoned town. And it's abandoned because the coal fires underneath the town have been burning for many years now. That is actually based in some reality. There is a town called Centralia, Pennsylvania that has basically been evacuated. It went from over 1800 residents years ago to as of I think it was 2020, it only had like five residents left because there were coal fires burning underneath the town. And so that drastically affected everything. And so that town is abandoned. And that's basically what Silent Hill, West Virginia is. And I pretty sure it's not an actual town. But yeah, the town that the theory of that is based on. But you really. You have to be a gamer to get into a story such as this. Because it feels like Rose, it feels like the mom is watch. It feels like she's. You're playing the video game, except she feels like you're playing her as this is going on. Because it's both third person and first person, because you see it from watching her and then you also see it through her eyes as well. And it's just a little off putting a bit just because it does cross that line into gore, it does cross that line into evil demonic type stuff that's going to make a lot of people uncomfortable. And. But there is an intrigue to the story and you might be thinking, why? Why am I bringing all this up? Because it all plays a factor in this one. Rose and her husband Christopher, they Adopt a baby. And they realize that she's from Silent Hill, but they adopt her when she's quite young. And her name is Sharon. And Sharon has this thing and she has these. She sleepwalks and it's just almost this terror. She wants to go home. And she's just. She's just desperate for answers. And her parents are desperate for answers. They're almost to the point of institutionalizing her because it's so disruptive to their lives. So Rose takes Sharon back to Silent Hill in search of answers to find out what's going on. And what she finds is something a lot more intense than you could have even imagined. And it's. It devolves very quickly from mystery into horror. [00:07:38] Speaker C: And. [00:07:38] Speaker A: And then it has this weird thing of. It goes back and forth from where everything's all clear. And then the next thing there's ash. And. Okay, that's one of the things that really kind of got me on this one that a lot of people aren't going to necessarily pay attention to. But if you have a coal fire burning underneath the town, you're not going to have ash from a volcano. It's similar to the ash that you'd see that. You'd see it like Dante's Peak. It's like in a volcano movie where the ash is falling from the sky. You're not going to get that if you have a coal mine burning underneath. And okay, that's maybe a little thing to get caught up on the trivial side of it, but it's just one of those things that's like, oh, come on, it is not going to do that. And I know it's not reality and I know it's a video game turned movie and I know all of this, but it's just some of that little stuff just, just like, oh, come on. And then. But back to the story. As Rose is searching for answers for Sharon when she gets to Silent Hill, Sharon disappears. And so most of the movie is. Is Rose looking for Sharon and the things that she comes across and she ends up coming across, these are religious type people. I did use the air quotes on that because it's like I said, it's creepy. And Rose has to go basically go down into hell to rescue Sharon or what she thinks is the whole thing. And you know me, no spoilers ever. But is she able to find the answers of what's going on with Sharon? What is. I mean, who Sharon is, what she is is not as clear as you may think. And she runs into some other people who try to help her with this situation. And they both help. And it's a help her such scenario on that because with every little bit that they give her to help her get closer to the answers, she delves deeper into the darkness. And so even as the story comes to a conclusion, it just kind of leaves you wondering what just happened. And it obviously leads into there's good, there's going to be more. And I will be back this next week talking about the new the other movies in this series here because there was this first one in 2006, then there was, I believe it's Silent Hill Redemption. And then the new one that just came out is Return to Silent Hill. So I'm going to be bringing those to you as well. So you may be kind of wondering like where I'm at. And like I said, the story is a little bit all over the place. It's a little bit inspired by this, it's a little bit this. It's a lot creepy, it's gory, it's off putting, it's very intense on the whole religious side of it type thing. Like I said, it definitely gets some pieces into it or some inspiration from the Exorcist with at least some of the stuff that's happening. So you may be wondering where I'm at. And since I already mentioned there's a difference between like where I am and then where I scored on the Deputy Deputy scale. And I do want to share the podcast image with you as well. So this is the movie poster. Here's the podcast image. I didn't change it up a whole lot, but I wanted to make it my own and just kind of add that creepy factor into it a little bit. So of course feel free to come over and check these out because this is interesting personally, because I our son is a gamer, I've been a bit of a computer gamer. I love games like Phantasmagoria, that was the reference on that one. I'm kind of into some of the more gory racing games, Carmageddon, things like that. There was this computer based apocalypse type game, apocalypse type game called America that I was really into for a long time. And this one kind of feels like a darker version of that. Like, like a more macabre version of that game. And so I was able to appreciate this from a different level. But as I always state, I do stay on the deputy scale and how I am approach how I'm look that I interrogate the movies for their plot and their content and this movie is definitely not for everyone. I openly admit that. Personally, I probably would have gone upper fives, maybe even low sixes just on a personal level. But staying true to the Deputy scale, this one may surprise you a little bit. I'm coming in with Silent Hill at just a 3.75 out of 10. Literally. If this is one of back when this was in the theater, it wouldn't surprise me if people went to this and walked out. Because like I said, if you're not into that gamer mindset, you're not going to appreciate a lot of the nuances of what's going on in this story. But if you are a hardcore gamer or if you're into these like creepy macabre type stories, there may be something here for you. So is this going to be one that you'll want to check out? That's completely up to you. But if you are a gamer, if you know somebody who's a gamer and they like those just kind of like the story is like the Last of Us and they have a little bit of inspiration from like Walking Dead and just some other stories like that, I think you'll appreciate this. And if not, then as always, there's more movie reviews that you'll get here with Movie Deputy. So as always, I hope that you hit those buttons. Be sure to subscribe and turn on that little notification bell to always get the latest and the greatest Movie Deputy content. And I will be back soon with another of these titles for you. Till later guys. Bye bye.
