Episode Transcript
[00:00:02] Speaker A: Hello my friends and welcome back to Movie Deputy Reviews where I do so apologize that I was not here on Wednesday. I have been, if you could probably tell, I've still got a bit of a frog in my throat. But I had almost no voice at all on Wednesday or even on Tuesday to even try to pre record something. I had pre recorded some of the other episodes, especially of the Strangers, leading up to what should have been Wednesday's episode, which would have been Chapter three. And that will be coming soon.
[00:00:31] Speaker B: So.
[00:00:31] Speaker A: So don't worry, I'm not leaving you hanging on that one. But today, as I have not been able to get to the theater in a few days, I am going back through some of my coffers of some other movies that I have watched and reviewed. And if you are on our YouTube channel, you know the movie we're talking about or if you saw the title of the episode, we are talking about the movie the Unbreakable Boy. Now a lot of you may not have heard of this movie. This was a smaller title by done by the Kingdom Company and it was a very inspirational story that is based on a true story.
Now I'm going to get into a little bit more of why it's called the Unbreakable Boy. But if you're familiar with the movie Unbreakable, there is no connection in the movie except why they are quote unquote unbreakable. That is the only connection between the Unbreakable movie and the Unbreakable Boy. I have had a lot of discussions with people over the last year because I actually watched this about a year ago and I've had a lot of discussions. They're like, okay, so is this that guy's son? I'm like, no, there's actually no connection between the two movies except for that.
So that's kind of an important thing to touch on and that those are not at all connected when it comes to that. Like I said, except for the reason why they are quote unquote unbreakable, which doesn't actually tie the two stories together.
Now I'm going to go over and let's check out the review for this and then of course we will be back to talk about the movie.
I will say I am giving the Unbreakable Boy. I was going back and forth on it, but I am giving it.
[00:02:00] Speaker C: Hey Ozman, are you sure that's the right hat for your first day?
[00:02:04] Speaker B: Don't be a goober, Daddy. Oh, Jesuit is. That's one. It's the Mountain Dew Code Red Hat and the best Part is the shit.
[00:02:12] Speaker A: Stick it.
[00:02:12] Speaker C: Oh, dude.
[00:02:15] Speaker B: I'm Austin, but you can call me Oz, man. Welcome back, everybody.
I have a lizard named Marty and a killer hat collection. When I meet people, I tell them everything. Logan, this is Tyler. He said we can be best friends. All I have to do is shut up.
Oh.
[00:02:33] Speaker A: Now, a lot of you, based on just this part of the trailer, may be wondering what direction that this movie is going in. And for those sensitive to things with bullying and stuff, this does deal with a little bit of that. But there is something a lot more infectious here that we'll get into here in a minute.
[00:02:49] Speaker B: Yeah, I'm also autistic.
[00:02:52] Speaker A: Autism presents itself in many different ways.
[00:02:55] Speaker D: It's a class for kids with special needs. They think that it's time, that it's only gonna get worse.
[00:03:00] Speaker A: Earth to Austin.
[00:03:01] Speaker B: I think his brain's on another planet. Nope. My brain is right here in my on Earth.
[00:03:07] Speaker C: This is not what I thought it was gonna be like shoes on Dad's Lay forward.
Austin, what are you doing?
I feel like I'm failing every day. And the harder I try, the worse I do.
[00:03:18] Speaker A: Honey, your mistakes don't define you. How you healed us.
[00:03:23] Speaker D: You've given up so much for this family, and you have never stopped fighting for us.
[00:03:28] Speaker A: You're still one day at a time.
Check out my sweet new board.
[00:03:31] Speaker B: Why are you such a jerk, man? Give it back.
[00:03:33] Speaker A: It's not.
[00:03:33] Speaker C: But you can borrow sometime.
[00:03:35] Speaker B: Why do you even want to be friends with him? Because he's sad.
Here's a cute fact.
Sometimes a sad moment feels happy.
And sometimes a happy moment feels sad.
I don't always know why.
That's just what it's like to be Austin.
[00:03:55] Speaker C: You're doing awesome, dude. Go on, get back out there.
[00:03:58] Speaker B: I can't.
[00:03:59] Speaker C: Sure you can.
[00:04:00] Speaker A: Watch this.
[00:04:02] Speaker B: Austin.
[00:04:03] Speaker A: Austin. Austin.
[00:04:07] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:04:11] Speaker C: Oz, man, do you want to fly?
[00:04:12] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:04:19] Speaker C: I wish I could enjoy anything as much as my son enjoys everything.
[00:04:23] Speaker A: That is probably one of the most meaningful quotes out of the entire story.
That to say that he wishes he could enjoy anything the way that his son enjoys everything.
It's about not just what's going on around you, but what you make of what's going on around you.
[00:04:41] Speaker B: Go. Dead as a dragon.
[00:04:44] Speaker C: Because, Austin, every day can be the best day.
Every moment the best moment.
[00:04:50] Speaker B: This is the best day of my life.
[00:04:53] Speaker C: You just have to be able to see it.
[00:05:00] Speaker A: People see kids like Osman, like Austin here, and they see something broken. They see something that needs to be fixed. They see something unusual. And just because it doesn't fit into what we classify as normal or as usual. Doesn't mean that it's not. The reason he is called the Unbreakable Boy is because he has brittle bone disease. This is not only a story of a special boy, but this is a love story.
This is a story of somebody who had the entire plan of his life drawn out and meets the woman of his dreams and is determined to make it work. But the thing is, she also has a medical condition and so he doesn't think and she doesn't think that it's going to work out. And then they are blessed with Osman Young Austin and they see all the struggles that he's going to face in life and they see the roadblocks and they see the troubles and they see everything that's going on. And then they have this infectious little boy, not infectious in a bad way, but just where his spirit and his tenacity and just the fervents he has for life.
It just, you can't help but smile watching this. And okay, there's some cringe worthy things as well. But it, it almost, in an unintentional way, almost makes light of some things as it goes through this, through some of this.
Because it's not just about his, his medical struggle. It's about family, it's about resilience, it's about belief, it's about the parents learning to grow alongside their kid. Now the mom's already kind of gone through some of this because she deals with a much milder form of brittle bone disease, but that's what she's dealing with as well. But the dad is this energetic, uplifting guy that just is dealing with real life and it struggles at times because even though parts of the story are really well developed, there's parts of it that just, they're just falling short on some of that. And it does follow the whole family struggle. Personal failures, emotional turning points, because they come to a roadblock where they can't do it by themselves anymore and they have to make some really tough decisions.
So this is not just a feel good, happy, uplifting film. It talks about the reality of what's going on. It's subtle, but at the same time it almost makes light of some really hard issues. And it's not completely so, but at times it's almost emotionally manipulative, at least a little bit because it's, it kind of guides you what to think, it guides you what to kind of go along with that. But not in a way that you really notice unless you're really kind of thinking about it when it's all done kind of the way Jesus Revolution did. I actually have seen it, but I haven't reviewed that one yet, but it's very similar to that. And then the same people who did the Best Christmas Passion ever, which I do have my review up on that one, so go check that out. Like I said, I am giving this an innocent rating, but that was only after a lot of back and forth that I really kind of debated where I wanted to go with it.
So you're probably wondering, score wise, where I ended up with the Unbreakable Boy. Well, first let me share the podcast image. I'm going to take away the poster, the podcast images you can see. I just kind of squared it off a bit. So nothing super fancy with that, but score wise, I'm actually going to probably surprise a few people. I am coming in with the Unbreakable boy at a 7.25 out of 10 on the Deputy scale.
So I hope that this one will help lift some spirit. If you are dealing with a child with a complex medical condition, or you yourself have a complex medical condition and you're just trying to find where you fit in and how life is going to fit in, let's say you are brand new to this journey. Let's say you are decades into this journey. There is something in this story for everybody, at least anybody dealing with stuff like that. If you have never dealt with a complex medical condition, if you have never dealt with a special needs child, if you've never dealt with autism, this may be a difficult movie to watch.
It's not going to be for everybody, but if you are dealing with any of that or you know somebody who is, this is definitely one that you're not going to want to miss. So I hope we'll be back again tomorrow with a new release from this weekend. I'm not sure which one it is yet, but I will be going to the theater to check some out and as always, I will be back again soon. Bye.
