[00:00:00] Hello and welcome back to Movie Deputy Reviews, where we bring you the most in depth interrogations of movies for their plot and content.
[00:00:09] And that actually includes shorts, too. I actually haven't done a whole lot of podcasts on shorts, a whole lot yet, but I've always made it a point to review them. Back when I was still putting all the reviews up on moviedeopity.com the one that we're talking about today.
[00:00:24] I don't often run into movies that literally stop me in my tracks, that sometimes these shorts can be really powerful. A lot of times shorts are just something that you blink, you miss, and they're easily forgotten. But this is one that defies that on every single level. This is one that hits. It doesn't necessarily, for me personally hit close to home, but what it represents hits very close to home.
[00:00:54] If you are brand new to Movie Deputy Reviews, welcome.
[00:00:58] If you are a returning visitor. You know my stance on stuff like this, and I want to make it known for everybody that I am a constitutionalist. I'm a United States citizen, born and raised in the United States. My family is from the United States, going back a couple generations.
[00:01:13] And I believe in freedom, that I fully stand with the Constitution on every, every single level. And doing so puts me in.
[00:01:25] I'm very conservative in a lot of my beliefs.
[00:01:29] And so when I had the chance to review this, I unfortunately, I've actually had this in my inbox for a little bit. And my apologies to the gentleman that sent it to me. He's actually the one responsible for the creation of this movie.
[00:01:45] And I've been unfortunately dealing with some health stuff. But I don't want to make excuses. It took me a little bit to get used to this. And after watching this and just finished watching this, actually I am recording this to go up first thing tomorrow morning. And this, this one stopped me. This one got me just right in my tracks. Now, you may be wondering what's so special about a movie. Well, it's not necessarily what it is, it's what it represents and how it's done that really makes a difference.
[00:02:19] This movie is set in the 80s, 1980s, and in that time, a lot of people don't realize that the Germany that we have today was not always the Germany that we had even then. And that's been in my lifetime. I was actually born in the 70s, so I remember when east and West Germany were two completely different countries.
[00:02:38] And if you are curious at all about the history on that, feel free to go look up the Berlin Wall and East and West Germany. There is. There's a lot of history in regards to that. And that's what a lot of this story is about. This is the story of Chris.
[00:02:56] I'm gonna totally butcher the last name. I'm gonna say Guffoy and his brother Stefan. Guffoy and Stefan is maybe one of the more main characters in this, but it is. It's their story together. And he may be wondering how. And don't worry, I'm not going to give spoilers. You know me, movie deputy, I will never spoil anything for you.
[00:03:19] But I will say this is based on a true story, and this is based on the DDR and the GDR and kind of what's going on with all of that. And if you're curious what those are, that's what social media is for. And that's also what, I mean, search engines are for and things like that. There's a ton of information.
[00:03:38] And I'm not going to spoil, like I said, what this story is, but they are desperate for freedom. Specifically Stefan. Stefan. Is he just. There's supposed to be certain things you do. Like in the US you have to register for Secret Service when you turn 18.
[00:03:54] And over there in East Germany at the time, you had to register and you had to basically serve under the regime of this socialist idea that was just so controlling and so foreboding that all he wanted was freedom. That's all he wanted. And he wanted this for himself and of course, for his family as well. But in order to make a difference for anybody else, he had to do something himself. Well, being that he didn't join up with the military, right off the bat, he. And the fact that he didn't do a couple of the things that were options, he had to begin working. And in doing so, he was able to get some information from kind of the underground sources a little bit, that there was going to be an opportunity coming forth.
[00:04:44] This opportunity was going to give him a chance to try to get to West Berlin, try to get to freedom. He believed in the freedom that the United States represented. He even had a flag with him, the United States flag.
[00:04:58] And just you could. You feel it. It's like you feel it in every sense of your being. You feel it in your bones, the passion that he had to do this. And he was willing to risk everything, everything to do it.
[00:05:15] So why is this story so powerful? And what. What is the score that I'm going to give it? You're probably wondering, I will say, just because of some of the content in this that I am going to give. Whispers of Freedom. That is by way the way, the title of this movie. I just realized I hadn't given that yet.
[00:05:33] Whispers of Freedom is the title, and I am giving this, unfortunately, a guilty rating. It is dealing with some subjects that may be a little intense for our youngest viewers and listeners.
[00:05:45] So if you want to watch this with your children and just be prepared, you may have to answer some questions because there. Some of the references are more subtle than they may seem and it may be a little confusing to, again, to the youngest of audiences. Well, but like I said, this. This one will reach you in every sense of your being, though. And that's why.
[00:06:12] That's also part of the reason I'm giving it a guilty reading.
[00:06:15] Not because there's anything wrong with the content.
[00:06:18] It is a little bit slow. It builds up a little bit slow in doing so. But when you're paying attention to the details and you're listening to what's being said on the radio and you're listening to his mom and you're following along and you're following why he's doing this, and there's some of the nuances that are a little bit less obvious as the story goes on. But. But it all builds to what happens.
[00:06:42] Now, I, like I said, I'm not going to spoil it, but I will say that it is a tragic ending and it will rip your stomach out and rip your heart along with it.
[00:06:56] Because when you realize what you just saw and then when you realize what happens, and of course, this is based on a true story, 100% true story here. And sorry, forgive me, my voice is breaking a little bit here, but some of the captions towards the end of this movie, and this movie is only 25 minutes, so if this is something you have an opportunity to check out, if this is something that you have an opportunity to watch, please do so. Quincy, Sorry, one of my. One of our. The kitty cats is acting up here in the office. And again, if you've been listening to me for long, you know, they're. They're all my mascots. But like I said, it ends in a tragedy, but it ends in a powerful one. And knowing how Stefan's life played into this and how Chris. What happened to Chris and what happened to their mom, I guess I can't spoil it. I won't spoil it for you. But I will say that this is one that you absolutely have to experience.
[00:07:59] Whether you find it on a link off of social media or you Google it, or however you can find this.
[00:08:06] I hope that you take a chance and experience this because there are those who grew up with freedom and I totally appreciate what it's from. I come from a very strong military family.
[00:08:20] There are those who grew up with freedom and take it for granted. We have all of these protests and everything nowadays calling for a bunch of different things that are anti freedom. And people, people don't seem to understand that when you are giving up your freedoms that you're giving up so much more and it's a slippery slope.
[00:08:45] People don't realize when it's just the little things, but then when the big things start happening they realize it just might be too late. So probably wanting score wise it's like you I usually don't get wait this long to give a score when I give a score the way I've given this one. But I wanted to make it worthwhile.
[00:09:03] I am giving Whispers of freedom an 8.5 out of 10 on the deputy scale. Now if you've been loyal to me for any length of time, you know how harsh I am. So this one, this one deserves it. There, there is something special here and I hope that this has a chance to go viral. I hope that this has a chance to open so many people's eyes. And the dedication at the end of this movie is that it's dedicated to all of the victims of the Berlin Wall.
[00:09:33] So if you are curious about that and if you are curious about this movie again, it's called Whispers of Freedom, please go check it out.
[00:09:40] I am going to try to do some recordings for some other movies that I've seen recently and try to get those up for you soon. But as always, I will be back soon.
