[00:00:00] Hello once again, and welcome back to another episode of Movie Deputy Reviews where we are going in depth to interrogate another modern film for you to kind of just kind of help you weed out all of the rest. And we're always on the lookout for the best, so. And you get a little bit of everything else. We have had quite a mix this week, haven't we, with some of the other ones we've been talking about. And the one we're talking about today, it actually opens nationwide today. And I'm honestly not sure why at this point. My brain is a little bit fried. Just. Let's just put it this way, because this movie is loosely based on an event. It's not. It's not supposed to be a historically based movie, but it's meant to almost be a parody of something that actually happened. And in doing so, it definitely, I would say to say that it loses its way is a compliment. I'm not sure what they were going for here or if the final product was what they were aiming for, but if it was, I'm. I would really love to know what they had envisioned before they even started.
[00:01:15] Now, do you have any idea the movie I'm talking about?
[00:01:19] Probably not. Today we are talking about the movie Y2K. It is about a party on the night of Y2K. And for any of us old enough to remember that, I actually remember, like, even Best Buy had stickers on their computers of Y2K compliant. And there was just this fear that when things switched over from December 31, 1999, at 23:59:59pm when it switched over to midnight to midnight on January 1 of 2000, that I guess they thought all the computers were going to malfunction. I mean, there were. There were people literally afraid that planes were going to fall out of the sky. There was just this panic with Y2K. People believed it was going to be the end of the world. And then of course, they believed that in 2012 too. But it was a real thing and it was a real scare that people had because we did not know what was going to happen. And this movie is set on December 31, 1999, during a party, a pre.
[00:02:24] Basically a Y2K party, a high school party. And you've got the geeks and you've got the freaks and you've got the jocks and you've got just kind of all of these people interacting. And I guess the draw of this movie is who's in it more so than what's in it, because there are a lot of big name stars nowadays that are in this movie. And there's a lot of people that are going to go to this movie just for that.
[00:02:55] But remember, this is a high school party that they're trying to portray. And we have people in their 20s, 30s, even in their 40s plus that are portraying high school students.
[00:03:08] And that isn't enough right there to kind of give you an idea of where this goes. But. And you know me, no spoilers. No spoilers at all. But when the time when the whole countdown is like the 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, Happy New Year comes around, let's say it's anything but. The power goes out and starts to flicker and comes back on and it becomes the whole us versus them mentality. Us being the human beings, them being the electronics that gained sentience.
[00:03:46] Think of the movie Maximum Overdrive and like what happened with the trucks there. And then picture every piece of electronic gadgets in and outside of the home turning against humans.
[00:04:02] And so it literally becomes an us versus them game of survival. And it tries to be a slasher movie. It's a bit gory at times and so I'm. It doesn't quite make it as a slasher movie.
[00:04:16] I would say it's trying to be a comedy, except it. The only parts that you're laughing at are the parts that are just so absurd. You're like, what in the world were they thinking?
[00:04:26] And if that's what they were going for, great, but I don't know. And then it's. It just leaves us with this scenario of the story where it's trying to gains something as it's going and it's trying to connect you with the people and it's trying to make this connection. And then it inserts all of this very adult content. There's a lot of nudity, there's video playing of certain acts that.
[00:04:59] Let's just say this movie is guilty, getting a very guilty rating. This one is not, absolutely not safe for anybody underage just because of some of the content in there.
[00:05:10] If it could get a rating somewhere between an R and an X, I think that would probably be fitting their strong language throughout as well.
[00:05:24] It tries to be all these different things and just doesn't quite make it.
[00:05:30] So where does this end up? Well, you're probably wondering about this movie and the score. Well, where this ends up is it ends up back kind of where it started with the movie. It kind of goes a little bit full circle. It's kind of a Play on things that supposedly this is something that was taking place worldwide.
[00:05:53] But everything is surrounded around this one community.
[00:05:58] Like I said, I won't spoil it for you. And what ends up being the key to solving it all is I. I can't give that away or that'd be a huge spoiler. So if you just want something in the background to turn on and just halfway pay attention to that, somebody maybe might enjoy it, then you might want to tune into this if it's. If it's playing on TV or something. This is absolutely not something I would waste my money on and I would advise you not to. E Obviously, if you want to, that's completely up to you. Score wise, I am coming in at a whopping 2.75 out of 10 on the Deputy scale. And trust me, that's being generous on this one. It was absolutely painful at times and there's scenes that will just. They're it. They're just so far over the top. And okay, limited budget or not, there's stuff that's limited budget that does a lot better than this. Now the one wholesome thing in the entire movie is there's a dedication in the credits set in loving memory of Linda Jo Kazub Kozub. It's K O Z U B. So I'm probably going to completely butcher how that is pronounced. But that is the most wholesome thing in the entire movie was the dedication.
[00:07:31] So if you are on a just drug induced, booze induced haze and trying to find just something stupid and idiotic to watch, that will surely become a cult classic, at least in some circles, unfortunately. But if you're looking for something like that, this just might fit the bill.
[00:07:56] As always, if you always want the latest and greatest movie deputy content, you know which buttons to push. I have to regrettably say that there this one did kind of end on a cliffhanger. Cliffhanger. Making me wonder if they're going to try to drag us through this mess again in the future.
[00:08:14] I certainly hope not, but I could see that there could be an opening to do. So is this one that I would even slightly recommend to anybody that is not just out of their mind? No, but like I said, it's certain to have its audience. Every movie out there does. Or obviously this one wouldn't have even been made. So I just hope that this will help somebody out there.
