[00:00:00] Why, hello, everybody and welcome back. It is once again me, your favorite and friendly Deputy of Movie Deputy podcasts, bringing to you the indepth interrogation of Expendables Four. Now, I don't know if you've ever been a fan of this series, but if you have, this one definitely lives up to at least all of the action and suspense that the other ones do. But I'm going to be getting into this one a little bit deeper as we go. Now, you may be wondering why I'm talking quite like this about it. That's because it's not going to be the story that you expect in multiple ways. It's almost hard to be this rough on it. But at the same time, staying true to the deputy scale is really hard. And it's not hard, but sometimes it's hard because the store in this one, the story itself, probably deserved a solid seven, maybe a seven and a quarter. But I can't judge it based off the story alone. [00:01:08] Sometimes I really wish I could, but I have to stay true to the deputy scale. This one, I'm trying to think, how do I want to word this? It's one bad thing because I don't ever script these things ahead of time, that I'm just kind of going off my own thoughts here. And so I'm just like, okay, I'm just going to jump in and describe how I came out when I was talking to one of theater managers the moment I came out of the theater. The story is great. I mean, it's got a really good story. There's some twists and turns along the way that just kind of take you by surprise. But the errors in this movie, if you care at all about accuracy of weapons and sounds and background and how everything plays out, this one is just full on cringeworthy. And also, have you ever tried to take a video while you're running around and being just full of action and you just get the jiggle effect? I don't know what else to call this, the jiggle effect. And a lot of this movie has that. Now, mind you, it's not just that, but there's a lot of the stuff that's going on both in things that are happening on screen and stuff that's in the background, like for green screen stuff. But they're using a cheat. Okay, I'm going to take some heat for this, but I'm going to just say a cheat simulation. Now there are SIM games that are just awesome. Like if you're playing the game and you're just immersed in everything that's going on and you get drawn into that world. But when you're mixing that with real life, like they're doing in this movie and I haven't even gotten to the story yet, you can't overlook it. It's like it's literally right there and it's in everything. It's like you're watching stuff in the background repeat. You're watching things like this and you're watching stuff that just seems cheap. And I don't know if their budget was suffering on this one after the first three or what was going on with this one. You don't quite full on need. [00:03:17] I want to say dopamine, and that's not the right word, dramamine. You don't full on need like motion sickness medication. But if you're sensitive to motion sickness on those jiggle scenes, you're going to have to look away, at least briefly. I don't get motion sick at all, but there were a couple of people in theater when I was in there, and they were gagging during these scenes. So it's not that they're gross. There's nothing I would consider gross in this movie. Okay, let me take that back. There's maybe one scene that if you've got a sensitive stomach, might not be the best. But I mean, that's just has a lot to do with a movie like this. But of course, we see the original team and they're trying to work a little bit of a love story into the beginning. Thankfully, that does not take over the story. I was really worried when I saw that in the trailer that that was going to kind of be an integral part of the movie. But no, I will say that there are a lot, and I can't stress that enough, a lot of adult references, sexual references, just it takes on this whole new category that this movie is definitely not safe for young kids. I wouldn't even say it's safe for teens tweens in that range. [00:04:34] Okay, if you're at all of a more conservative parent, this is not one that you're going to want to let your kids watch. If you are more open to letting your kids just experience stuff and explaining to them later, you might watch this before you let your kids watch it and decide for yourself. But you're probably thinking, okay, when is she going to get around to what she gave it for a score? And I'm dancing around that because obviously I've referenced what the story itself should get. And obviously, you know, that's not what I gave the movie. But I want to talk to you a little bit about the story first and then I will touch on the score, which, you know, usually if I leave the score to the end, it's usually pretty. [00:05:12] But but don't jump to conclusions quite yet. We see something going on at one of Omar Gaddafi's old Munition type bunker factory things over in the Middle East, and you're watching kind of the stuff take place and people are being shot and just stuff is happening and people are trying to get these detonators that he has. But you're like, okay, why do you need the detonators? Well, that comes out further in the movie. That kind of whole thing happens and the bad guys get the detonators. Well, then the government comes to the Expendables and they're like, hey, we needed to do something so they kind of get the old team together or as much as they can. Obviously it's not everybody. They put this team together and they're going over there and they're trying to do something and then something really tragic happens. I'm not going to ruin that for you because that would be a major spoiler. But let's just say it changes the team permanently and you can maybe jump to conclusions and those conclusions may be correct, and I'm not going to either confirm or deny that. Let's just say it changes the team permanently. So they kind of have to go back to square one. It's like, okay, can they still go do this? Can they do this despite not being everything that they once were? Well, there's something that needed to happen because of that that kind of makes it possible. So now they've got to go intercept this nuclear material to try to prevent this nuclear bomb from taking out a good chunk of just it's kind of tied in with the Middle East and with Blue. I'm really surprised the movie didn't get like overly political at any point of this. But as much as I can say that, like I said, it's just at times difficult to watch, this would almost be a movie that would be better as an audio, like if you could just listen to the movie without watching stuff happen. But at the same time, you're going to hear all these sounds that don't necessarily make sense in the upcoming Movies podcast. I described this as grown up goonies meeting Mad Max, and I don't think I could have really described that better. After watching the movie, I was like dead on the money. Dead on the money. This totally feels like if the Goonies were all grown up meeting Mad Max and kind of all of the chaos that goes along with mean, just some of the things that happen. There are definitely some laughs to be had along the way. Like I said, this is just one of those movies. You cannot take it too seriously. The story, it tries really hard to be heartwarming as much as it's trying to do that. It's more of just purely entertaining. Like I said, the story has merit, but you have to be able to look past everything else. So what did I give this? [00:08:03] And I'm so sorry, but I actually only gave this movie a 5.5 on the deputy scale. Like I said, the story itself has merit. I almost feel bad for being this harsh on it, but at the same time, I have to stay true to the deputy scale. And a five is a decent story. Significant flaws. And okay, I will go as far as to say this is a good story. But the flaws that are taking place on screen, not so much in the acting, but just in everything else that's going on around them, it just looks and feels cheap. So I'm sorry to say that. Please don't let that discourage you from wanting to go see this movie. If you are a fan of the Expendables movies, I know you're probably wondering what I thought of one, two and three. And I will be getting those to you. It's just going to be in the near future. But like I said, don't let this discourage you from watching this. If you were a fan of the first three, if you weren't a fan, then, yeah, this one's going to be hard to get into. Like I said, just because of everything going on with it. Just come prepared for the stuff that I've tried to bring to your attention. Of course, no spoilers ever with me, so you don't ever have to worry about that. But I hope this has at least helped you a little bit, so I'm hoping we're going to at least get one good one this week, and I was really hoping this was going to be it, but we're just going to kind of dive then and see what tomorrow brings. So be sure and come back and I'll talk to you again soon. Bye.
