[00:00:01] Speaker A: Hello, my friends, and welcome back to Movie Deputy Reviews. If you are wondering what's going on here, I'm gonna be filling you in real soon. As you know, as the deputy of Movie Deputy Reviews, I interrogate movies for their plot and their content, and people are like, oh, well, do you only do the big movies? Nope. I always. That's not the thing I say regularly is I do the A list, B list, and no list. And currently this movie is a no list. But that's not gonna be for much longer. This movie is going to explode and you're gonna want to stick around and find out why. Going for Two is a story that based on the poster alone, you would think it's about the Nebraska Cornhuskers. And if you've been listening to Movie Deputy Reviews for very long, you know, I am based here in Lincoln, Nebraska. Am I originally from Nebraska? No. But I've lived in Nebraska more than I've ever lived anywhere else. And so I guess I'm an honorary Nebraska, at least as far as that goes. Now, I went to go see this movie last night and I was. I did not know what to expect. I had seen the poster, I had not seen the trailer in the, in the theaters. And so I didn't go hunting for it. I just was, okay, I'm just going to go. I'm not going to go to see this without any preconceived notions. And I'm thinking, okay, it's got Go Big Red. And anybody that's from Nebraska knows Go Big Red means it's just a giant chant they do for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. And if you're in Nebraska for very long or even if you're not from Nebraska, you're probably familiar with Cornhusker fans. Because being a Cornhusker fan in Nebraska is not just a fan base, it is a religion. Going to Memorial Stadium on game day, it is. Memorial Stadium literally becomes the third largest city in Nebraska on game days because it used to have like 70 something thousand seats. In the renovation, that's been like 20 something years ago. There's over 92,000 seats in Memorial Stadium and it has sold out every single game almost. I think we're approaching the 500. There's like 400 and something games that have been consecutive sellouts, I think since like 1962. Seriously. But I'm not trying to go down that road. Honestly. I'm not even a football fan. So going to this, I was like going, okay, there's going to be a Q and A with the creator of the movie. The writer and some of the people of some of the actors are going to be there. I'm like, okay, this could be cool. I'll check it out, help boost them and give them a little bit more promotion. What I was not expecting was this film. I expected just another feel good sports movie. That is not what you get here. And like I said, I hadn't even checked the trailer out. And I have. I posted it. We're going to be watching it here together here in a second because I haven't even watched this yet. So we're going to experience this together. So come along with me and don't worry. We're going to get into more of this movie. Like I said, this one is going to blow you away. And like I said, we're going to get into all of that very quickly. [00:03:08] Speaker B: The fall of 1983 year my Cornhuskers set out to win the national championship. [00:03:14] Speaker A: Okay. In the fall of 1983, I was nine years old. So just to kind of touch on that a little bit. Yes, I am that old. [00:03:24] Speaker B: I was just missing one little thing. Where to go? Don't know. And you're sure there's supposed to be two [00:03:34] Speaker A: now from the trailer you can get. I mean, okay, even if I hadn't seen the movie from the trailer alone, I can kind of figure out what they're referencing there as. He's kind of looking under the sheets and looking down in that general direction. So I'll let you use your imagination on that one. [00:03:51] Speaker B: How the heck am I gonna make it through junior high? I'm half a dude, but if I'm the only guy with just one. Mom's crying again. [00:04:00] Speaker C: I woke up one day and I'm a widow with two kids. [00:04:05] Speaker A: Jimmy, stand up for yourself. You need to grow a pair. [00:04:11] Speaker C: Your brother's almost 13 and somebody's gotta tell him about the facts of life. I was thinking that you could do it. Don't really make him like your dad anymore. [00:04:21] Speaker B: There's the need in operation. Do you mind if I ask you a medical question? [00:04:25] Speaker A: Sure. [00:04:25] Speaker B: Do you know if doctors have a layaway type deal? How am I supposed to pay for my operation? You could, like, sell your Husker dress. Frankie, you could talk to my parents. Mr. Fitzpatrick, I have a question. I think there might be something going on with my. [00:04:44] Speaker A: When a man cannot choose, he ceases to be a man. [00:04:48] Speaker B: Exodus A Clockwork Orange Courthouskers with the longest winning I'm asking myself, what would coach do? [00:04:53] Speaker A: And I don't know. [00:04:55] Speaker B: Hey, don't freak. Well, figure this out. Girlfriends never give up on each other. Ever. As it turns out, sometimes what we most desire isn't as important. [00:05:18] Speaker A: This is the one we've been waiting [00:05:20] Speaker B: for as the ones who show up when they're needed the most. [00:05:31] Speaker A: Happy New Year. The ball hasn't dropped yet, has it? [00:05:34] Speaker B: Nope. No balls dropping here. Go Big Red. [00:05:39] Speaker A: Go Big Red. Like I said, the Go Big Red chant is a must for Nebraska Cornhuskers. I have a little bit of a joke myself. Typically, if it's like, go Big Red. I'm like, no, Big Red. Because I'm actually not a football fan. But that doesn't take away from me recognizing, I mean, what just this absolute spectacle of a. Of a fan base is. I mean, there is nothing like watching downtown on a game day. There is nothing like even trying to get through downtown on a game day. I mean, it is insane, but it's also so inspiring. But it's nowhere near as inspiring as what this movie is. Because I came into this thinking, okay, like I said, just another feel good football movie. And I was blown away because this is not a football movie. Is there football in the story? Is football a major piece of the story? Yes, but that is not the story. The story is about a widow and her young kids. But the biggest part of the story is one of those kids is named Jimmy and his best friend is Frankie. And they are the story. The whole thing is about them going through and they're going into middle school and they're dealing with all the different emotions that are going on with that and they're dealing with some biological issues that are happening. And it's a little bit risky and stuff like that in some scenes and some of the content, but that just adds to it. So I this movie is rated PG13. I normally don't get into that a whole lot. I normally just go with my guilty and my innocent. And for those that don't know, guilty is safe for 13 and above. Innocent is safe for 12 and below. I honestly, even with some of the questionable content and stuff going on with this one, I'm going to give Going for Two an innocent reading because I honestly think there, there's something that is really important here. Even for younger kids. Some of the content's a little racy and there's some questionable things that happen a few times during that, but it doesn't distract from the main story itself and it doesn't distract from what is really happening. So when the mom, Louise is going, she's a widow, and she's trying to raise these two kids. She's got Molly and she's got Jimmy. Molly's a teenager and just trying to express herself and do her own thing, but at the same time, she's lost without her dad. And so she's trying to figure out her way in the world. At the same time, Jimmy, he's. He doesn't know how to deal with the grief and he doesn't know how to deal with that. So he's got Frankie and they do everything together. And this is set back in, like, the early 1980s, and the world was an entirely different world back then. And the amount of just trust and camaraderie that you would have in a neighborhood and that you would have with different families and everything that was going on was just so real. I mean, it was so natural. And it was just. That is the embodiment of this movie. That is the heart of this movie. That is everything that you're going to take away from this movie is right here. And it's just going to. It's going to make you laugh, it's going to make you cry. You're going to feel it. You don't even have to be a football fan. If you are, you're going to enjoy it that much more. But you don't even have to be a football fan to love this movie. There is just something so special here that deserves and needs to be shared. So if you've seen this, go see it again. Absolutely. This one is one of those ones that you can watch over and over and over, and it's going to have its fan base. This is going to be a favorite for many. And I was so lucky. At tonight's screening, there was actually a former Nebraska cornhusker that used to play under Tom Osborne. And if you're not familiar with the name Tom Osborne, then you're not that familiar with Nebraska. But I guarantee it's worth looking up. There's also a few special cameos in this movie that true Nebraska fans will recognize. And right now, this movie is only in Nebraska. But what I need you to do. Yeah, I know you're probably wondering score wise where I'm at. Don't worry, I'm getting to that. I have not forgotten. You know me, I don't ever forget that part. I mean, that's the most important part. Rating and reading the movie based on the deputy scale. But don't worry, I'm getting there. But this one is right now. It's like 50 theaters in Nebraska, but We need to spread the word. We need to get this word out there. Let's make this movie go bonkers because it. This needs to be seen. Like whether you're a football fan or not, whether you're just a family fan or not, this is not a chick flick. This is not just a dude flick. This, this is a family flick. Or you don't have to have a family to enjoy this. I mean, if you just want to go see this, go see it. It is for all ages. Whether you're this big. I'd say like 2 to 102. I mean, this move. There is something here for everybody. And it is just. You get so caught up in it that I want this movie to go viral. This is one of those ones. I've had some independent movies like this one absolutely explode and be on my top 10 list or kind of in that range and you probably getting a hit. Where I'm going with this one. As you know, I love nostalgia movies. As our current number one movie on the movie. I can't talk right now. Our current number one movie of 2026 is actually another nostalgia movie and it's got the highest rating I've given a movie so far this year. But guess what? We are going to be tied for that position with going number two now. Okay, that's kind of a double entendre, but it doesn't mean what you think it means on that. Going for number two is actually a football term. But if you have not been paying attention to Movie Deputy for very long, you probably don't know that score that I'm talking about. Are you ready? I don't have Dremel. I really need to get some sound effects, don't I? Going for number two. I am giving an astounding 8.5 out of 10 on the Deputy scale. I was. I was really debating in the Sevens for a little bit. Not because of there was anything wrong with it, but just because of some of that questionable content in the story a little bit. But after kind of did some discussion and just kind of talking it out with some individuals, I. It adds to the story. It doesn't take away from it. And those points in the story, they add to the realism of the movie. They add to the. They add to the plot and the content. They add to everything that's going on. And it's not like that's a main focus of the story. It's just you're seeing what these kids are going through and you get to experience what they're experiencing. The Highs and the lows and everything in between. So does this movie have a head? Does this movie have a happy ending? You know me, I'm not going to spoil it for you, but if you are familiar with the Nebraska Cornhuskers, you're probably familiar with what happened. If you're not familiar, you've got to come see Even if you're familiar with got to come see this movie. Now, even before I went to see this, I saw Going for two based on the True season. So I had a chance to ask the writer, Kathleen. It's like, okay, was this based on a true story, based on true individuals? And she shared a story that was very heartfelt to her of the Fitzpatricks in this movie were based on a family that she grew up and babysat for. And that was just a very heartwarming connection. You could really get the heart and the feeling of why she wrote this. And even before I went to see this, if you pay attention to the poster right over here on my side, you'll see that there's a car right above the word four and going for two, that is a 1981 Chevrolet Citation. Now, why do I know that that was my first car years ago, and that just held special memories? So when I saw that on the poster, I had nothing to do with it, but I'm just like. That kind of tickled me in the feels in kind of all the right ways. Just like, eee. So does this movie deserve to be in the number one spot on movie deputy for 2026? Well, it's tied in that spot, that same spot. So will we see anything else for this year? What do I do if I get two movies in the number one spot? I've never dealt with that before, so I guess we're gonna have to figure that out as the year comes to a close. But go see this movie. Grab a friend. Go see this movie.
