Episode Transcript
[00:00:00] Speaker A: Hello, everybody, and welcome back to Movie Deputy Reviews, where, if you check the title out, you know the movie that we are talking about today. And this one is extra special for so many different reasons.
This one, okay, I was not a Barbie kid.
If I went to a friend's house, they were playing Barbies. That was fun to play, but. But me, myself, I did not get my first Barbie until I was 11 years old, and that was a Christmas present from somebody else. But I grew up with Transformers, with Master, with he man, with the Thundercats, with Matchbox and Hot Wheels. I had a dirt driveway, and I lived just down the road from a big lake. So I was a total tomboy when it came to what I wanted to play with. And so I had he man, and I had Skeletor, and I had Castle Grayskull, and I had the whole bit.
So years ago, when the Masters of the Universe movie came out, I was really excited. And then I went to see it. I'm like, what was that? What? Why?
I loved the cartoon.
The movie, though, that last movie we got, I should probably go back and review that one. But especially after seeing this one, I'm not really enticed to do so. But that's because this one is phenomenal.
I cannot unders. I cannot say that enough to the point of.
Went to Marcus theaters last night, so shout out to Marcus theaters. And they had some special things. So they actually had the sort of power. And they had Castle Grayskull, and they had. Or they have Battle Cat. They've got Cringer. Okay. I show real well. There we go. There we go.
There's my keychain.
Get back here in front of the camera.
But they got Cringer.
Gonna turn it the right way here one of these days. But I now have that on my keys. And I had a friend that was at the theater there, take some pictures. So I gotta share these with you.
I know it's silly, but it's just. It's me. So there's me holding my sword. Believe it or not, that's a cup.
I'm not getting any kickback from Marcus theaters for this. There's nothing I do for any of the bonuses on that. But that. That is a cup.
It's got a straw that comes through the hilt of the sword, and it's just awesome. But then, of course, I can't have the sort of power without doing the. Huh?
I have the power.
Just me being me. And so I had to do that. That was just.
That was just too good not to do. And I Had to share that with all of you. So, yeah, that's just me being silly. But I was so excited.
Now my ones that I actually bought and brought home are still new in the plastic, but that was a display one that they had there at the theater. I'm just like, I've got to do it.
And of course I did these and stuff. After I saw the movie, I was literally to the point of being in tears. Not from disappointment, but because it was so much better than I could have expected on every level. Now, mind you, Masters of the Universe is getting a guilty rating through and through. It's got a guilty rating.
If you let your kids see this, you need to go with them because you are going to have to explain a lot of the adult jokes.
This movie is made for those of us Gen Xers that grew up with he man that it is evolved. I mean, this is like the grown up version of He Man. There's no sex scenes or anything like that or anything sexual directly. But there's a lot of innuendo and a lot of language and there's even.
I know it's going to upset a lot of people, but there's a gd if you know the curse word that I'm referring to, you can figure that out. But I know that's going to upset some people.
Now, before we get into the trailer with this. And no, I'm not trying to preach it anybody, but Cringer is awesome. We get to see Cringer as a kitten.
Now, I should have uploaded this picture and I didn't. But I'm going to show it to you here on my phone. I'm going to turn this.
You know me, no spoilers. See if I can get that in the image here.
Cringer is a kitten.
Isn't that adorable? Try to turn to see if I can get it a little better. Better light.
But that's. Cringer is a kitten now.
He's an orange tiger. Well, he's a green tiger with orange stripes is what I'm trying to say. Do not put dye on your kitties. Do not change the color of your kitties. It is not safe for them. Even the pet safe dyes are not good for your kitties or not good for your pets in general. So please, even if you love Cringer Battle Cat, do not do that to your kitties, please.
So that is definitely my PSA on this one. I absolutely love Cringer. I've always loved Cringer Battle Cat. I mean, I had.
I wish I still had all my toys that I had when I was a kid, I had the whole, I had Cringer with the whole battle armor and all that. And I had he man and the sword and man at arms and I had the whole, I had everything.
I didn't buy it all new, but over the years I collected it at garage sales and oh, I was a happy girl. That was just, I loved playing with that stuff and like I said, it was not the typical thing. But so I got really excited when I was seeing the previews for this and then I was like, oh, please don't screw it up. Please don't screw it up. I came to the theater expecting to give this a6 based on purely seeing some of the previews. And I hadn't sought out the previews to watch, but just like watching them ahead of other movies and things like that. And I'm just, just like, okay, this one looks a lot better than the last movie that they came out with.
But I was still tempering my expectations. And I'm not going to tell you what I gave this quite yet, but I was literally at times during the movie going, I was like a little kid and I was having so much fun.
And where I'm at personally and where I'm at movie critically wise, it's a little, little different.
But that. He'll find out more as we go on. Now if you're getting ready to go see this, I don't want you to miss out. There are three bonus scenes in the credits. There's one at the very beginning of the credits, there's one in the middle of the credits, and there's one in the post credits. When the credits are all the way done. There's still another bonus scene. So don't get up and leave the theater right away. You don't want to get up and leave the theater just because these bonus scenes are amazing and this is not going to be the last that we see of these guys.
And I just hope that this, this is coming out the same time as like Scary Movie and there's some other big name movies. We've got back rooms and stuff like that at the theaters right now. And so this one is not getting as much attention as it deserves.
But before we get too much more into this, I'm not going to talk your ear off forever, I promise. I want to share with you the trailer. And this trailer is so cool. So yeah, let's check this out together.
[00:07:36] Speaker B: I know most of you don't remember me, but I know all of you.
[00:07:52] Speaker A: Castle, grayskull, And just in case you're missing that there, it's got Cringer as the MGM tiger going.
And yes, I know those are really sucky. Roar. But it's fun.
[00:08:11] Speaker B: Even though I was stuck light years away on Earth, I never stuck. Stop trying to get back home.
[00:08:22] Speaker A: Everything changed since you left.
[00:08:25] Speaker B: It's all gone.
Skeletor took my family.
And he destroyed our world.
It's all my fault.
I know how it feels to feel.
Take this one.
And when you fall, that's your chance to stand tall.
I have the pa.
[00:09:15] Speaker A: Even just watching this, I have goosebumps again. I mean, that is like, it's like literal goosebumps here.
[00:09:27] Speaker B: My universe, you're quick in my shadow.
This is my home.
I'm gonna fight for it.
But I can't do it without you. Somebody wants to brawl. I need every man, woman, or whatever that is.
You may have the B, but you're too scared to use it. Trust me, I know how to use it.
[00:10:18] Speaker A: You tell everyone that you're from another planet, It just makes you sound a little very crazy.
Wow, it is just so much fun. And this, this movie, I mean, Adam's all very touchy feely, let's go with her feelings. Let's do this.
Throughout the whole movie, it makes fun of the whole nabby, pamby touchy feely stuff.
I mean, he's both credited for having the caring, compassionate side, but the stuff that even if is trying to appear woke or trying to appear like that gets made fun of throughout the movie, which makes it even better. Makes it even better. And the, the jokes are just, they just keep on coming. Now, okay, Jared Leto as Skeletor, he will never be Alan Oppenheimer. Admittedly.
Now if you are a fan of old school Skeletor, you will definitely appreciate what Jared does with this character, but he will never be Oppenheimer. Now if you're not familiar with what that is, Alan Oppenheimer is the original voice of Skeletor with the high pitched laugh and just the iconic Skeletor that we know the rest of this cast just, I mean, from Adam, which is he man.
And then you've got Teela and then you've got man at Arms, which is Duncan. You've got the Sorceress and you've got the King and Queen and you've got Mechanic and you've got Ram man, and you've got all of this going on. And then you have Beastman, you've got all of Skeletor's crew and stuff too. And if you just cut all of this. And it's just, it's all working together.
Now. What's the story? If you. A lot of people don't know the story.
I was talking to people at the theater who'd never even heard of he man. I'm like, I feel so old.
I mean, like I said, I love this as a kid and I know a lot of other Gen Xers who love this as kids. And my son, he's 32 and love. He has always really enjoyed Masters of the Universe as well. But I raised him on that stuff.
He had Castle Gray Skull growing up and it was, oh, come on, you got to raise him. Right, right.
But yeah, this was just an adventure. But at the very beginning of this, Skeletor comes to eternity, to Eternos in Eternia.
And because of what's going on, Adam's parents have to send him away to be safe. Now it sounds like Superman, sounds like Star wars, sounds like a bunch of. And you can definitely.
There are definite influences of how he man came to be. This is just, in my personal opinion, I could be way off, but I think it was inspired by Superman, Star wars, and of course Conan the Barbarian. Now we see a reference to Conan. Only the name is Torak in this movie, but it's very clearly somebody, something that is made to look very much like Schwarzenegger. And so you can definitely get the Conan feel of that, of what's going on. But when Adam is sent away, he is sent away with the sword of Power and he becomes separated from the sword. So he spends most of his life looking for it. And when he finally finds it, it's in a very unexpected place.
But he doesn't remember exactly what to do to activate everything. But little does he know that just coming in contact with the sword will alert somebody back home.
And so that get. I won't, you know me, I'm not going to spoil anything. But that person will go get Adam and take him back to Eternia to try to save his home and try to, I mean, basically help all of the people of Eternia and the story will continue from there.
So he starts in Eternia and then of course, he spends part of the life, his life on Earth and then he goes back to Eternia.
Now what does that mean for all of this? It's action packed, it's fun, it's.
There's comedy throughout. You can't help but laugh. It's supposed to be funny. It's supposed to be just action packed and fun and just nostalgic I mean this movie scratches an itch that you didn't even know you had.
I didn't even know I had this itch and this movie scratched it in all the right places.
I was just bouncing off the walls by the time this movie was done and I was full on in tears because I was so happy with how they did this.
Now personally, I always say giving a 10 on movie deputy is impossible.
But on a personal level, this movie probably has ever has gotten about as close as movies could get for just tickling all the right spots. This movie is Gen X Fuel.
This is what literally flows through Gen X veins, is wanting something like this in the theaters. Something that is just. It's entertaining, it's fun, it's nostalgia, it's everything you want in a movie. It's comedy, it's drama, it's action. It's got a little bit of romance but nothing like over the top.
And it's just, it's innocent and at the same time it's naughty.
Like I said, the jokes in this one are not safe for younger, for young ears. Not without supervision at least. I mean a lot of the jokes are gonna go right over the kids heads but the adults are gonna get them right off the bat. Especially if you're a Gen Xer, you're gonna understand these jokes on a whole different level and it's just going to leave you just like I said it. I will Never give a 10 on movie Deputy but on a personal level it's, it, it's really up there. But staying true to the Deputy scale and acknowledging that this movie is everything that it promises to be and more there. Are there mistakes? Absolutely. But the story is so good that it takes you through them, it brings you through them. It. You just.
You don't want to get up to go to the bathroom for anything. In this movie, there's. There's something that is constantly going on and you don't want to miss a moment. So what did I give it?
Have you guessed?
When I told my sister, I called my sister as soon as I left the theater last night, I told her what I'm giving this movie.
She was shocked. She goes, I haven't heard you give a score like that in a very long time. It's because I haven't. There hasn't been a movie this good in a long time. And it's not getting the accolade it deserves. It's not getting the hoopla is not getting the fanfare that it deserves.
Because I'm giving masters of the universe. An 8.5 out of 10 on the Deputy scale.
Yes, you heard that right. Personally, I'd probably be a solid nine easily, if not nine, like a little bit higher. But this movie tickled me in all the right places.
And it tickled that nostalgia.
And even people that weren't familiar with the story that had gone to see it were just raving about it when it was done. And I sat there, just talked to people and stuff when it was all said and done, and it was just so much fun, just the pure nostalgia. And I cannot stop recommending this.
So if you go see this, just go prepared. Like I said, the jokes are not the cartoon and everything like that was completely safe for younger viewers.
This movie, once again, is for the people who grew up with he man. It's for the adults that were kids back then, is who this movie is made for.
And it's just. It's pure gold.
I don't. I don't say that about movies very often, so you can imagine.
But yeah, I just.
I cannot wait. I'm actually going to go back to the theater because I'm going to see it with my sister, I'm going to see it with my husband, and I'm going to see it with my son.
I don't know in which order. And a couple of them may be combined together, but I will be seeing this one multiple times in the theater. And this is definitely going in my collection. So, as always, I promise this is going to be an adventure. And I love being able to bring movies like this to you, especially if this is one that you're not necessarily familiar with. But I want to create that intrigue and that suspense and just that we're.
You're going to take a movie that you weren't necessarily interested in to begin with, and hopefully this will create enough of that that you'll want to go check this out.
