Episode Transcript
[00:00:00] Speaker A: Hello, my friends, and welcome back. You may think I look pretty fresh and familiar compared to what I was for yesterday's show, because I'm actually recording this one. I just recorded Masters of the Universe, and now we are going to be talking about Back Rooms. I saw this one, and this one is unusual. Let's. Let's put it that way. I think unusual is a good term for it.
This one, like iron lung. And I actually just learned when I was at the theater earlier that Obsession are. These are all based on YouTube channels. I knew Iron Lung was. And I knew Backrooms was. I did not know Obsession was. So that was kind of a neat little tidbit of information.
But Backrooms is.
It's unsettling. Let's put it this way. It's very unsettling. This is getting a guilty rating through and through, but for a different reason than our last one.
Backrooms is liminal horror and it's found footage.
Those two pieces right there are severely limiting its audience already.
There are so many people that follow YouTube these days, but there's not a lot of people that follow these rabbit holes of these things that turn into movies.
And Backrooms is kind of that. It deals with the whole thing of the fear of confined spaces. Not. Not necessarily claustrophobia, but with liminal horror. It's more of the being confined in just a narrow.
Think of like Maze Runner, only much smaller and much more intense.
That's kind of what you get a little bit here with Back Rooms, but not. I mean, it's completely different.
It's the same, but it's different. Back Rooms deals with somebody who is lonely.
And the whole thing with this movie is it's alone versus lonely. What's the difference?
And I'm looking down at my phone now. The guy's name is Clark. That's who you see in the poster here.
And Clark, he has lost his wife. Don't worry. No spoilers. He is now without a home. And so he doesn't get. Doesn't have a chance to follow his dream. So he is doing something else with his life.
And that thing that he's doing with his life leads him to the opportunity to explore these back rooms. Now, what do I mean by that? Now, I can't give too much of that away, but let's check out the trailer together and we'll kind of go from there.
[00:02:42] Speaker B: I found something in the store.
[00:02:47] Speaker A: Now, I want to preface this. You may think, wait a minute. This looks really dated. It's because it is. This entire thing is set in 1990.
So if that kind of gives you a little bit of an idea on that, of kind of what to maybe expect visually. But, yeah, this whole thing is set in 1990. And yes, this really is what furniture looked like at that point.
Okay, what did you find
[00:03:15] Speaker B: the place?
I found a place.
[00:03:28] Speaker A: Just. Even at this point in the movie when he. When you realize how or what he has to do to get to this place, that alone just ups the creep factor a bit.
[00:03:57] Speaker B: Anyone there?
[00:04:00] Speaker A: Now, you hear this voice playing throughout the times when he's in these back rooms, but you can't quite figure out what it is. And it's not until towards the end of the movie that you actually hear the English version. So if you understand one of the foreign versions of what's being played that you're gonna kind of have a heads up on that. But without that, you're not gonna find out what's being said till towards the very end.
[00:04:25] Speaker B: Look, I know how this sounds, but you gotta understand, it's massive in there.
[00:04:30] Speaker A: I'm not saying I don't believe you.
[00:04:32] Speaker B: Okay, I'm gonna come back here with proof.
All right? You feel me? Yeah.
Follow my lead.
[00:04:39] Speaker A: Clark.
[00:04:39] Speaker B: What is this? It's what I'm trying to figure out. I've been there every night since I found the place and I still barely scratched the surface. I just take a slow.
[00:04:54] Speaker A: Oh, my God.
[00:04:55] Speaker B: Pull me up.
[00:04:55] Speaker A: Pull me up.
[00:04:56] Speaker B: Pull me up.
[00:04:56] Speaker A: What do you see?
[00:04:59] Speaker B: All these rooms.
This place builds them.
It's like a maze. It just goes on and on.
[00:05:09] Speaker A: It's a maze that goes on and on, but something just feels off.
[00:05:15] Speaker B: Sometimes I'm scared I'll get lost.
[00:05:18] Speaker A: Can you hear me?
I don't understand.
What is this?
[00:05:33] Speaker B: It's beautiful.
Am I right?
[00:05:38] Speaker A: Hello?
Wow.
Sometimes those ones like that just are disconcerting on an entirely different level.
And this one, it's like this Back rooms tries to recreate rooms, but things are just wrong. Things are just off and yet find. They find themselves almost.
I mean, they know how to get out, but they find themselves almost stuck there at the same time.
It's basically like almost like a Twilight Zone episode, except it's a movie.
Now, I will say this made a bit more sense than like with iron lung. You drop into this thing and you're stuck in this ship and you can't really get out. And I know markiplier is not Kane on this one, but this one, it's. You're not stuck in a ship, but you're stuck in these rooms. You're stuck in this alternate place that just feels wrong and you can't quite put your finger on it.
This is a really slow burn. If you are into found footage, horror, if you are into liminal horror, you're going to get a lot more out of this. Or if you follow the YouTube channel, you're going to get a lot more out of this than the average viewer.
If you are not into those things, expect to be confused.
Now, as it gets towards the end, there is a. There's a major twist that even I didn't see coming. It's like usually a lot of the twists, it's like there's little hints to what's going on when this twist is revealed. Even I was kind of going, wow.
And I don't know if that was a good wow or a bad wow, but it was intriguing and it's almost hinting that this is not going to be the last that we see of what's going on in here now.
Does that mean it's the end or just the beginning?
It's really hard to tell. I think this has the promise of maybe doing more to it.
And so if you're into those types of stories, you're going. I mean, even as the movie deputy, I would give this a lot higher ranking if it was something that was at least. It doesn't need to be for everybody, but it has to at least be understood.
And unless you're already familiar with what's going on or you are into that very narrow horror niche of like, liminal stuff or found footage like the Blair Witch and like, things like that, these ones are just really hard to get behind.
And I was just, I'm thinking, okay, am I just missing something?
Because it was a lot of college age kids that were there tonight and when I went to see this. So I was just asking some of them as they were leaving and the vast majority were more confused than I was. They didn't even catch the twist at the end.
And I'm like, and the one because I fell asleep, I couldn't pay attention.
That kind of said a lot right there. It's like if you can easily fall asleep during a movie and you don't normally fall asleep during movies.
Yeah, this one does have. This one has. There's a. There's a definite creep factor to this one.
It's unsettling and there's just, there's a little bit of gore.
There's just a lot of just this unsettling stuff that you're trying to figure out. And there's references to things going on of different things with mental illness and a child. I won't give away too much about that because that that would be a huge spoiler for it.
But how that all kind of fits together into what's going on, you've really got to pay attention to put the pieces together. So if you fall asleep or if you have a hard time paying attention, you're just not going to get there.
Fans of this I talked to two people tonight who were big fans, but they already follow the YouTube channel. They're very familiar with the backroom story and they're like 10 out of 10. One one of them was 10 out of 10 and I was like give it a five out of 10, but it was still really good.
And I'm like, okay, that's kind of. It's like they were both into it, but I mean that's a really drastic range to say, like I said, the gore factor, just the creep factor of this one. It's definitely getting the, like I said, the guilty rating score wise, just because it's one of those ones that you have to kind of have knowledge of ahead of time or you're just not going to get it.
I am putting back rooms.
I know I'm going to get a lot of hate for this ahead of time just putting this out there. I'm giving backrooms a 4.5 out of 10 on the deputy scale. Mind you, a 4 is watchable but forgettable. A 5 is decent story. Significant flaws. And though this story has a lot of promise of being able to maybe be more, like I said, you've really got to pay attention to the details or you have to be aware of the story ahead of time.
Those two things right there are going to limit quite a bit of its audience. And this is probably one of the most popular movies, at least in my region of the country right now.
But the feeling of this movie is really mixed.
It's not what people expect it to be. At least the vast majority of people I was running into that was just not what they were expecting.
So I hope this helps, especially if this is one that you were debating about seeing. Either this is going to encourage you to go see it. Like I said, if you're into the liminal stuff and things like that, you're going to get a lot more out of this.
But if not, there's a lot of other great movies to watch right now, especially Masters of the Universe. I'm going to give that another shout out on that. But yeah, if you're wanting to go to the movie and see something that like if you follow this and this is one you want to see, kind of like with Markiplier and Iron Lung.
Great. Go see it. Go enjoy it. I would love some feedback on it, but if you are not already familiar with this story, it's not quite what you expect.
So as always, I promise this is going to be an adventure and so I hope I delivered on that at least. But if you haven't done so already, click subscribe and turn on that notification bell for the latest and the greatest Movie Deputy content. And as always, I will be back with you soon. Bye.
