Show Notes

Wes Craven, a name synonymous with horror, has left a scar on an entire generation. Now that a new generation is coming of age, it's only fitting that he scar them as well.

Original Review:

The little town of Woodsboro was rocked by a senseless crime one year ago. Just as the town is starting to get back to normal, something happens that turns the town upside down. A senseless murder of some young teens sends the town reeling. As the Woodsboro residents are trying to make sense of what happened, it quickly becomes evident that it was only the beginning. One by one, others are targeted by the Ghostface killer. What is the killer after? As the murders continue, who is behind the mask becomes more of a mystery. When what the killer is after begins to surface, a bunch of teens gather together to survive. Just when they think they have outsmarted Ghostface, they soon realize there is more to this than what they thought. When the killer is unmasked, justice can finally be served. Or can it?

An unexpected murder mystery that has the typical Wes Craven elements with a few surprises mixed in. Will this be like some of his other films and lead into more or will this be the last time we see Ghostface... I guess we'll have to wait and see.

[00:00:01] Speaker A: Hello, my friends, and welcome back to Movie Deputy Reviews. You probably thought I forgot about you, but no, this is just an evening episode. As a lot of you know, or if you have been regular watchers of Movie Deputy reviews for very long. I deal with some chronic health issues and so sometimes it's a little bit harder for me to get up that early in the morning and get my shows done. I should probably start just recording some ahead and that way I'm just kind of covered on that. But I was feeling a little bit better after I got out of bed and so of course I wanted to bring you the show. It's just going to be 8pm instead of 8am now, if you are checked out the title or if you can see the poster right here over on our YouTube channel, we are talking about a movie from 1996, a movie called Scream. Now, as you know, the new Scream 7 just came out. So this has become an entire franchise. But what did it start with? Well, this is where it kind of gets a little bit fun. Now, if you can't already guess, Scream is getting a guilty rating by far. That's definitely a guilty rating on that. So. But Wes Craven for. For Gen Xers like myself, Wes Craven put a. Left us with a giant scar on our psyche. There are people that are still traumatized by Nightmare on Elm Street. Now, by modern standards, Nightmare on Elm street might be a little soft, but by the standards of back then with the whole 1, 2, Freddy's coming for you, etc. On that. But so he's. There's an entire generation of kids, including myself. I've never been freaked out by horror movies. I actually love them, but I'm weird. And so when Scream came out, it was. It came out in 1996, so it came out right in the early part of the millennial era. Now this is Wes Craven scarring an entirely new generation. So yes, this does have a guilty rating. But before I get too deep into this, I want to share with you the original review that had been. Or actually, no, before we do the review, I want to share with you the trailer and then I'll share with you the review that we had had on moviedebity.com so let's jump over and check out the trailer. Hello? [00:02:21] Speaker B: Hello? [00:02:21] Speaker C: Who is this? [00:02:23] Speaker B: Tell me your name, I'll tell you mine. [00:02:25] Speaker C: I don't think so. [00:02:27] Speaker B: What's that noise? [00:02:29] Speaker A: Popcorn. [00:02:31] Speaker C: I'm getting ready to watch a video. [00:02:32] Speaker A: Really? What? [00:02:34] Speaker C: Just some scary movie. [00:02:36] Speaker B: You like scary movies, huh? You never told me a name. [00:02:39] Speaker C: Why do you want to know my name? [00:02:41] Speaker B: I want to know who I'm looking at [00:02:46] Speaker A: now. You might recognize the face. Yes, that is Drew Barrymore. [00:02:50] Speaker B: Someone is playing a deadly game. [00:02:54] Speaker D: It all began with the scream of a 911. [00:02:57] Speaker B: Someone who's seen one too many scary movies. Now he's taking his love of fear. Hello, Sydney. One step too far. Like scary movies. [00:03:11] Speaker D: What's the point? [00:03:13] Speaker A: Now, before I get too far into this, I want to touch on the thing because I know I'm going to get questions. This is what cordless phones really looked like in the mid-90s. They were these big, bulky things. We didn't have this. I mean, cell phones were in their infancy and then we didn't have anything like what we have now. They were good for calling and texting and Zach, when you had to push the number keys for letters and the whole bit. But yes, the cordless phones were these big, bulky, blocky things and you were lucky if you got about an hour of talk time out of them before they had to recharge. But yeah, I know it's a little bit off subject, but I know I'm going to get those questions, so I'd rather address it real quick. [00:03:51] Speaker D: They're all the same. Some stupid killer stalking some big breasted girl who can't act, who's always running upstairs and she should be going out the front door. Insulting. [00:03:59] Speaker E: There are certain rules that enough to blindfold to successfully survive a scary move. You can never have sex. Never ever, ever, under any circumstances. Say, I'll be right back cuz you [00:04:16] Speaker A: won't be mad at me. You want one? Yeah, sure. I'll be right back. [00:04:28] Speaker B: He just kills by them. Don't answer the pH. Open the door. Don't try to hide. [00:04:54] Speaker A: The last word in fear. As you probably noticed from the trailer, there are a lot of familiar faces in this movie. So like I said, if you are a fan of horror and if you have not seen this one, you might want to check it out. But stick with me because we're gonna. I want to share with you the original review that we'd had on moviedebity.com and then of course, we're going to be getting into a little bit more about the movie as well. So just bear with me on that. Come over here. The original review. The little town of Woodsboro was rocked by a senseless crime one year ago. Just as the town is starting to get back to normal, something happens that will turn the town upside down. A senseless murder of some young teens sends the whole town reeling. As the Woodsboro residents are trying to make sense of what happened, it quickly becomes evident that that it was only the beginning. One by one, others are targeted by the Ghost Face Killer. What is the killer after? As the murders continued, who is behind the mask becomes more of a mystery. When what the killer is after begins to surface, a bunch of teens gather together to survive. Just when they think they have outsmarted Ghostface, they soon realize that there is more to this than what they thought. When the killer is unmasked, justice can finally be served. Or can it? An unexpected murder mystery that has the typical Wes Craven elements with a few surprises mixed in. Will this be like some of his other films and lead into more? Or will this be the last time we see Ghostface? I guess we'll have to wait and see. So obviously we know it became more because we have had now seven of these movies. And like I said, yes, that was Drew Barrymore. And a little bit of a side fact on that. Drew Barrymore was actually offered the lead in Scream instead of Nev Campbell, but turned it down for a bunch of different reasons. But I'll just let you google that because I don't want to give any spoilers away for any parts of the ideas of the story. Now you may be wondering, score wise, where I'm coming in with Scream. This one might surprise you a little bit there. I mean it is just quintessential, just the whole, I like the insurance commercial. Why can't we just get into running car? I mean, it plays into the whole just the endless do nots of a horror movie. And this basically does all of them. And it's almost silly at times. And I always say if I laugh during a horror movie, that kills it. But this one, I mean, it's almost supposed to be funny, at least at times because it's just absurd. But that's everything that they're going for with here. I don't know if this is supposed to be scary or if it's supposed to just be a mystery or what it is, but I think it has a little bit of an identity crisis as it begins. So the Original scream In 1996, we are giving it just a 5.5 out of 10 on the deputy scale. That is decent story, significant flaws. It's kind of a weird place to start from. This is some people's favorite movie. I have met people that this is their favorite movie of all time. But the amount of cliches and everything in this and just the dorkiness of it. Now mind you, I'm not judging it based on what it was made the whole thing of 1996 because it was accurate to the time with how with how people reacted to everything around them and just kind of just the equivalent of what's happening around them. That's that's true to the time, but just story wise and everything else, I I really just couldn't go anymore. So if you have never seen the series, I'll be honest, this is a good place to start because this the movies go in order so you definitely want to watch them in order. They don't do the whole jump around thing like this like some other major series do. This one actually does go in order. So if you are curious about this and want to check it out, I hope this helps. And if not, of course we talk about all sorts of other movies as well. But if you haven't done so already, make sure to click that subscribe and turn on that little notification bell so you get the latest and the Greatest Movie Deputy content.
