[00:00:01] Speaker A: Movie Deputy Reviews Interrogating movies for plot and content.
[00:00:08] Speaker B: Hello, my friends. I hope you enjoyed that new intro because you're going to see a lot more stuff like that. It's one of the many changes that we are implementing over here at Movie Deputy. And thank you to my beautiful friend Jackie for helping me create those.
I had the idea, she had the vision, she brought it to life and boom. So if you are wondering what I'm talking about, come on over to our YouTube channel and be sure to check out the new intros and outros on the new review videos that are going to be on all of our videos from this forward.
They'll change a little bit. We're going to have some themed ones and things like that as time goes on. But we are making this a lot more fun for all of us.
And you probably figured out which movie I'm talking about today. I am talking about Street Fighter. Now.
I'm gonna age myself with this a little bit. I remember when Street Fighter was strictly an arcade game back in 1987.
Yeah, that was just the only way you could play it was to go to the arcade and play it. And then when the Sega Genesis released the Street Fighter 2 that I think that was in, I probably should have looked this up beforehand. I'm gonna say 1993.
I really should look that up. I'm thinking that's probably pretty accurate. But I was just big into some of the characters and some of the games and I had some specific characters that I like. I love Blanca. I love Blanca. Blanca, however you pronounce it, that was always my favorite character. But Zangief, I almost forgot about Zangief until I was talking with a friend about it.
And if you're familiar with all the Street Fighter, you remember this move.
And that was. It's where he's like extending his arm and just totally like beating the crap out of his opponents.
And Street Fighter, it was just fun. It was violence for violence sake. It was not. There was not supposed to be a deep in depth story. There was not supposed to be development of characters. It was just to be fun. And the movies that were made from that, it's kind of like when the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles became a movie. There it's a little bit easier to appreciate the characters. But with Street Fighter, you have fighters. What are they supposed to do? They're supposed to fight. They're supposed to engage one another. It's supposed to be intense. It's supposed to be silly.
It's supposed to be cheesy it's supposed to be all of these things. And how does that make it good? Well, that's. If you are a Street Fighter fan, especially from the old days, you are going to appreciate the nostalgia in this movie. You've got Rue Ryu, and then you've got Ken. And they grew up basically as brothers.
Something happens and they kind of go away from each other. But the World World Championship fight. Trying to remember. I gotta go back to my notes here. My apologies on that.
I take too many notes.
World Warrior Tournament, that's what I was trying to remember, is coming up. And Ken's getting ready to fight in this. But he really wants to find Rue and kind of get this going. But he see, he comes across all these other people that are also competing for the. For the title.
And Ken really wants this title. He's done commercials. He's kind of made another name for himself out there out and about.
But why does he want this title so bad?
Well, before we get too far into that. And you know me, I won't spoil anything. Let's jump into the trailer and check this out. I think it's going to be fun.
[00:03:33] Speaker C: Brother. I failed you.
There was darkness growing within me.
You're not my brother.
Do something. What are you waiting for?
Forgive me.
[00:03:54] Speaker D: You were the best fighter in the world. And then you disappeared. What happened?
[00:03:58] Speaker C: The path I'm on now is not one of combat. I don't fight anymore.
[00:04:04] Speaker D: It's honestly the stupidest thing I've ever heard.
[00:04:07] Speaker B: And to understand the game is to understand why that is such a absurd statement for R to make.
[00:04:14] Speaker D: My brother KE is in danger.
[00:04:20] Speaker C: I spent years living in Ryu's shadow.
Now I'm gonna win it all.
[00:04:30] Speaker D: This tournament isn't what you think it is.
If you want to save your brother, then you must fight.
Round one.
[00:04:56] Speaker C: I won't deny I'm a straight.
You win.
Ain't no stopping me.
Oh, hell no. This is about to get interesting.
I'm gonna kill you. Prepare for combat, my adversary. Trouble. Trouble. Trouble.
[00:05:12] Speaker D: The fiercest, strongest, deadliest fighters on earth. This is street fighting.
Such a
[00:05:21] Speaker C: ridiculous look.
[00:05:27] Speaker D: Whoops. You dropped something.
You lose.
[00:05:38] Speaker C: This might sting a little.
I'm a street fighter.
I made a promise to protect you.
[00:05:53] Speaker E: Lord, you can my business as a prime.
[00:05:56] Speaker C: To live is the fight.
The fight is to live.
[00:06:14] Speaker E: Who did that to your face,
[00:06:16] Speaker B: Kyle? Oh, I don't know, Dan.
You know anybody in this tournament who fights with a claw hand?
It's entertaining. It's fun. It's cheesy. You're gonna recognize some characters that were specific to very specific editions of this game as it's been released over the years. I mean, a lot of. A lot has happened since 1980, 1987. That's 39 years.
Street Fighter and its different forms and different characters.
Most of the story revolves around some of the main characters that we know from the. Or from the origins of the game. But of course, we see a little bit of extra now if you're familiar with the game, you know that there was each. Each one of the fighters had a special power.
And we don't really see that so much in the beginning, but as the movie plays out, and I'm thinking, okay, come on, it's a Street Fighter movie. It's got to include some of the.
The fancy schmancy stuff. It's got to include the stuff that made the fighting cool, that made you want to come back and fight with your characters because you're like, you want to use this special feature, Want to sit with the controller and just kind of do this and all. It's like I would just want to reuse those special features over and over and over again. And okay, maybe that's plain dirty. But it was fun. I don't know.
The whole point was to beat your opponent, and that was to use anything necessary. Though I didn't take advantage of cheat codes as much as a lot of other people did, at least on home consoles.
But this movie is very nostalgic of the original video game. You're just taken back, especially if you're somebody that grew up with that or if you're somebody that's familiar with the Street Fighter games and you appreciate the nostalgia and just the cheesiness of. As you can see from the trailer, some of the designs, some of the haircuts, some of the. Everything going on is just very nostalgic to that time frame.
Now, if that's what you're looking for, that's what you're going to get here. I was really debating on if I was going to go guilty or innocent on Street Fighter. I think just because the level of some of the fighting may be a little bit too intense for the youngest of audiences, I am giving Street Fighter reluctantly a guilty rating. I would probably say if you review. If you have a chance to screen this before you let your littles watch it, or if you let your littles, like, play more violent video games and things like that, then this would be a perfectly fine.
Want to watch it. The violence is not over the top.
Now I have to Say with that, somebody like me. I tend to notice things with continuity. I tend to notice errors. I tend to notice little things like that or just things that don't make a lot of sense. There's not a lot of that in the movie, but there's enough of it that it was just tying my brain in knots.
I don't focus. I don't. I don't try to focus on that during the review, but it's like, it does affect my score. So you're probably wondering where I'm coming in with Street Fighter. And, like, I appreciate the nostalgia. I appreciate the good guy, bad guy. And it makes you wonder. I'll feel a little bit at times. It's like, okay, who's the goodbye who? Goodbye, good guy, bad guy.
And it's just an adventure throughout.
So where did I end up with on this one? I'm going to ruffle a few feathers with this one for sure, because I always say that I can't criticize a movie for doing exactly what it's meant to be. I mean, look at things like Deadpool. Look at things like just other movies that are over the top, but at the same time, if you're gonna go that over the top with what they're doing, I'm not criticizing it on any of the graphics or I'm not criticizing it on the fight styles. I'm not criticizing it on the story itself because it's true to the original idea of that. But what I am criticizing is the fact that I don't know if they went into as much depth as they could have with these, because, okay, we've had a lot of information to go on on these characters.
But I also have to.
I can't get the stuff out of my head that's the errors and the mistakes and just kind of the stuff that's like, ah, my brain.
So with Street Fighter, I am coming in at a 5.75 out of 10 on the Deputy scale with saying that this movie probably would easily be in the Sevens had some of that stuff been maybe a little bit further tweaked in the process. And I know making movies like this is not cheap, but like I said, if you want a movie with the nostalgia factor, think Masters of the Universe. Only Street Fighter style. It's just, you gotta take the good and the bad and you gotta weigh it. And with, like, stories like Masters of the Universe, it was a strong enough, developed enough story that it carried it. This one, I'm just not sure it had enough to carry it past those mistakes.
So that's where I'm at with this one. I don't want to discourage you from watching this. If you were ever a fan of the video game, you gotta go check this out. You're not gonna regret it. If you're not a big fan of the video game, not a fan of fighting games in general, then this probably is not going to appeal to you. But if you are one of those, then this is one you're gonna definitely want to check out. I would love your feedback. Let me know what you think of my review and what my score on this one. And make sure to stick around because we've got a special video on the back end of this too. As always, hit those buttons and I'll talk to you soon. Bye.
