[00:00:01] Speaker A: Hello my friends and welcome back to Movie Deputy Reviews. You can tell by the title we are talking about a fun one today. So I hope that you are ready for this. If you were ever a fan of the series, like years ago, Land of the Lost, I know there's been some newer remakes. I'm talking the original or the recent TV series, La Brea or anything along those lines, then you are going to enjoy this movie. I will say I am giving this movie a guilty rating. There are some scenes that are going to be a little bit too intense for some of the younger viewers.
But I would just recommend watching this first before you let the littles watch it. Just because of some of those intense scenes.
But you're probably wondering which one we're talking about if you were. I'm just on the podcast and you weren't paying attention. No offense to that whatsoever. But we are talking about the movie the End of Oak Street.
Now of course we have a star studded cast here which are at least for the primary characters.
And then we have some animals that we are familiar with from other franchises that we know as dinosaurs.
Now this is not like a whole Jurassic park type situation. Like I said, I'm comparing it to La Brea. I'm comparing it to Land of the Lost.
It's very similar to those. Now in this one we have the Platt family. They are just a quiet family just living in suburbia. The mom is a. She dreams of being a writer and she puts her deepest desires in her stories.
Why does that matter? Well, that kind of plays into the story. I'm not giving anything away. You know me, no spoilers ever.
And the dad also works and he does pizza delivery as like a side job. Now together they are kind of growing apart and the kids are starting to feel that the kids are teenagers and they're starting to pick up on all the chaos and stuff in the home.
And then one evening some things start to get really weird. There's this really bright light outside and things happen. And then there's some conflict with some neighbors going, okay, come on, like what? Why did you guys do this? Only they didn't do it. Only that. I'm not going to tell you what it is. No, I couldn't do that.
And then kind of as things play out, it gets a lot more interesting.
Now what happened to that bright light? Well, let's check out the trailer and find out.
Did anybody else see that weird light last night?
[00:02:24] Speaker B: What weird light?
[00:02:26] Speaker A: The wind was blowing all crazy, Starbucks freaked out, embarking. Could have been lights from a helicopter or a ufo.
[00:02:34] Speaker B: Aliens. Shut up, dad.
[00:02:45] Speaker A: Now, if you were over here on our YouTube channel, of course you are watching this amazing trailer with us. If you're listening on the podcast, you're probably not getting the full thrill of what's going on here.
We are seeing this bright light. We're seeing it kind of pan around the room and it's trying to make it give that whole creepy extra worldly thing that's almost making you think maybe aliens or something along those lines. And you're seeing how it's disrupting this family.
Water's not working.
[00:03:14] Speaker B: Looks like the whole neighborhood's lost power.
What the hell is that?
Tell me it's time to come home. We can't leave.
I think that our neighborhood, our house, our whole street has moved.
How the hell is that even possible?
Get out of there. Run. What the hell's going on? Get inside now. I just heard a gunshot.
I don't need you to walk away with.
Gather supplies. Grab anything you can use as a weapon.
What are we going to do?
We're going to survive.
God's not going to let us die here, Craig. You only go to church at Christmas
[00:04:32] Speaker A: and now you're telling the kids God's
[00:04:33] Speaker B: looking out for us? What about the people who are out there getting eaten?
Get back.
Get back.
I don't need you to worry for me, cuz I'm all right.
[00:05:02] Speaker A: Only they are far from all right. It plays out. It almost feels like it's supposed to be a comedy, only I don't think it's supposed to be a comedy. It's kind of intense, it's kind of silly at times.
And it's just. You're going, what in the world happened? If you couldn't tell by all the music and the sounds of the dinosaurs and all that, that this. It's like. It's a very intense thing. They said if you're only. Only here on the podcast. Thank you very much for being here, but you gotta. Especially on a trailer like this. I invite you to come on over and check this out because I want you to watch this with us and just really kind of absorb all of the intensity that this is. Especially if this is a movie that has your interest at all. If you were like, if you were ever a fan of those TV series or if you're even if you're a fan of like the Jurassic series, it's just, it's. That's not your typical dinosaur drama, but it is definitely an adventure to be had. Now you saw me kind of hinting about the lights prior to playing the trailer.
And then as you saw in the trailer, there was no water. And all of a sudden they drive to this edge of this cliff. It's like, what is happening? Well, they realize this. I mean, something happened not only to them, but to their neighborhood.
And, like, how did we get here? It's like, is there a way to ever get home?
Are they stuck here? How do they survive? And it takes like. Then there. There's one scene where they. They're like, oh, there's milk in the fridge. And they're like, wait, this is the last milk we're ever going to have. Because they're realizing that they. They're not home anymore or they're not where they began, at least.
And it's just kind of the whole series. It's like I said, it's kind of silly. It's just, it's.
It's a bit goofier than I thought it would be. Like I said, it's almost supposed to be a comedy, only it's not supposed to be a comedy. There's definitely some, like, moments, and it's. A lot of the movie, honestly, is kind of just. It's good to mediocre, mediocre to good. It's. There's. There's some definite memorable moments along the way. And it's just. You're kind of going, but what about the dog? What about Starbucks? And again, not to spoil anything for anybody, but. But Starbucks doesn't get the ending that you might think.
And I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but it's just there's a surprise with that that you might not expect.
So if you see this and you're worried about what's going to happen to Starbucks, don't be. And we get one little view of a kitty cat, but we don't really see any other or much for other kitty cats and stuff in the movie. But I mean, you know your home, you know your neighborhood, you know your little slice of suburbia, or whether you're out in the city or if you're out in the country or anything like that, you know you. Who you are, you basically. And most of you probably know your neighbors. And now nowadays, maybe not so much, but in this one, everybody kind of knows their neighbors. It's just the friendlies, the typical suburbia, and it's taking place in 1982. So if you're like, well, why didn't they just use their cell phones?
That would be why. Because this movie is taking place in 1982.
And okay, if you went back and this movie was like something from back then, we had the capability to sci fi things back then, there would have been a lot more people tying it to Land of the Lost.
And it's just there's. There's so many tie ins to this and so many tie ins to La Brea and it's just, it leaves you just kind of wondering. It's like, okay, what is going to happen next? Is this the end of the story? Do we see more?
Well, it almost leads into like, as the story kind of wraps up, it almost leads into that there could be more to this story. Now will there be A Part 2? Will there be a sequel to this? I have no idea. But part of me kind of hopes so. And I'm not going to spoil how it ends because that's kind of a pretty big thing. But I mean the whole thing is, it's enjoyable, but as it's kind of going along, you can't. You keep waiting for the crescendo, you keep waiting for the, the hoopla, you keep waiting for something extra to happen.
And when it does happen, it's literally one of the biggest laugh out loud moments in the movie.
And it's like going, I could not help myself. I let out a literal boisterous laugh when this one scene happened and I just couldn't contain myself. And it's like that was almost redeeming for the movie when as I was watching this, I'm like, okay, maybe fives.
And with this scene I'm like, okay, maybe a seven. I'm like, no, no, no, not, not, not quite, not quite there.
And I've really kind of been debating since I watched this where I'm gonna, where I was gonna end up with on this score.
And I'm really happy with kind of where I ended up with on this. I actually ended up with a 6 out of 10 on the deputy scale. Like I said, a lot of it I was in fives. But there, like I said, there's one scene that is almost redeeming for most of this movie. And it's enough that it kind of just kind of perks up the whole thing.
Now if you are offended by strong language, there is a lot of strong language in this movie, a lot of different swears and even some bigger swears in this one as well. So if that's something that bothers you or your family, then this might not be the movie for you.
But like I said, it's an adventure. It's a lot of fun. I talked to a few people at the theater after I went to go see this, and I was just kind of shaking my head. I'm just asleep.
But I mean, this newer generation, they don't know. There's one scene in this movie where the mom runs into a payphone and so she runs into this box to make a call. And I was talking to some kids, or kids like early 20s, and they're like, we don't understand. Why did she run into a box to make a call? They had no idea what a payphone was. I couldn't help. I chuckled on that a little bit. I wasn't making fun of them in the least because they didn't know. But I had to kind of explain what a payphone was.
And I'm like, okay, am I really that old? And like, yes, I am.
But like I said, this one, if you are at all a fan of, like, those shows that I've referenced on this, if this is one that you've even been considering about seeing, it's. It's at least worth it to watch it. Is it great? Is it going to be anybody's favorite movie? Probably.
There's. Everybody out there has some. Every movie you've ever seen is somebody's favorite movie and some random retrospective thing. Is this going to be yours? I don't know. But at least it's a fun adventure.
