[00:00:01] Speaker A: Hello, my friends, and welcome back to Movie Deputy Reviews. You probably thought I forgot, but I'm here. Like I always fit. It's either going to be 8am or 8pm and I'm dealing with some stuff I wasn't planning on dealing with. It started. I mean, I've been dealing with it for a little bit, but I went to the doctor today and found out that, yeah, it's having a high pain tolerance is not always a good thing.
I thought I had the onset of something and turns out it was actually a lot worse than I thought it was. And so now I've got a bunch more medications and antibiotics and stuff to take. But they said having a high pain tolerance is sometimes a bad thing because you don't always realize how severe something is until it kind of sneaks up on you and goes, gotcha. And that's kind of where I found myself today. So that's why this is not a morning show. I spent a good portion of the day at the doctor, so I don't want to bore you with all the details, but I'm slowly getting better. The pain from this is slowly getting better.
For I've had some, well, not a ton of people, but I've had enough people ask me what I had done that I'm going to just explain this a little bit. I had a couple teeth on both sides of the bottom, my bottom jaw that broke off below the gum line. And so I had to go in for oral surgery where they had to take away some bone. They'd like open it up and take away some bone to get the teeth out.
And so I had quite a few stitches and quite a few things like that because then they had to grind away the bone and then they had to just kind of all the stuff that goes along with that because a lot of bone loss that I have in my lower jaw from some other issues. I'm not a candidate for implants. So the healing process is just very slow. Now. The, the stitches have just fallen out as of yesterday. So that makes it a little easier to talk. But it's still painful. But I'm getting a lot better.
But you didn't come to hear me talk about my health stuff. You came to hear about the movie. And the movie that we are talking about today is the one that I promised you on Saturday. We are talking about the first hymn. Now, what is the first hymn? Well, that's what I want to get into a little bit with you is back in the day, all of these writings were on papyrus and were on these scrolls and everything and that's how they put together. But what we know is the Hebrew Bible and it's what's. What's recognized by Judaism and Christianity and Islam and basically all of what we know of religion, at least with those three major religions are based on scrolls that have been found and based on books that have been found that were the disciples. And that's what put together the Old Testament and then put together the New Testament and just kind of all of that. But in the midst of finding all of this they came. There was a find that was. I think it's, I'm going to totally get this wrong. I think it's like 30 centimeters by 5 centimeters. Centimeters or it's, it's a very small piece and it's about yay big. So. I know, I know I'm off on my centimeters on that.
And we're going to get into a little bit more of that with the trailer that I'm going to get into. But it was the first time text had been found with musical annotations.
And so for the first time in history we were able to hear what a song from those days sounded like.
And we get, and in this story we get to hear what it originally sounded like. And we. And as they're putting this together, oh, you know me, no spoilers on that.
But let's get into the trailer and then we'll talk about this a little bit more because there, this is just special.
Now I want to let you know for there's not a lot in here that's going to interest you maybe younger viewers. But the first hymn is getting an innocent rating. It, it is a beautiful story. It is very well told. And if you are a fan of Christian music, if you are a fan of theological history, if you are a fan of anything along with that, if you're a fan of Egyptian history, you may think. Wait, wait, wait, wait. What does that have to do with it? Well, let's come along with me and find out.
[00:04:13] Speaker B: The Christian hymn is a remarkable discovery. Archaeologists had no idea what they'd uncovered. An 1800 year old Christian hymn.
[00:04:26] Speaker A: Now think about that. 1800 years old, first to be discovered
[00:04:31] Speaker B: with words and music.
It's not even a page really. It's just 30cm by 5cm.
[00:04:38] Speaker A: I did have the measurements right. I was trying to remember that from the movie. So yay.
[00:04:42] Speaker B: But it provides amazing early evidence not only of the beliefs and spread of Christianity but also of its music.
We want to understand this ancient song
[00:04:55] Speaker A: now before I Get too far, too much more into this.
If you are very strong in your belief system and you are comfortable with your relationship with our father and kind of all of that, this movie is going to mean a lot more to you. If you are not a particularly religious person. This, this movie still may be interesting to you from a historical perspective, but I just kind of want to just kind of put that out there for people who may be kind of at the point of the review. They're good. We're going to turn this. This isn't for us. Yes, this one, like I said, it's going to appeal to the. A very religious crowd and it's going to appeal to a historical crowd just in a different way. Now if you're not into either one of those things, there's, there's some really slow parts to this and that are probably not going to appeal to you. But I hope that you'll at least finish giving this review a chance. So bear with me. I promise it'll be worth it.
[00:05:53] Speaker B: But we also want to do much more. It's time to bring it back to life.
This is such an exciting project. Anybody that I mention it to just. They're fascinated. Buried within the first hymn is an idea many doubted we would ever find in a text this old.
Now scholars often say this line is of some interest and what they mean is it's amazing. They're saying that somehow within the one divine identity you have the Father, the Son, Son and the Holy Spirit.
[00:06:27] Speaker A: Now we think of that as a modern idea. We think of that like as something that wasn't really taught back in the day, but in this hymn that exists. So it's kind of, kind of extraordinary.
[00:06:43] Speaker B: We're on a historical and musical journey from the sands of Egypt to America's music capital. From Australian creative spaces to English thinking spaces. Harnessing the power of music.
They still remember that was that one
[00:06:58] Speaker A: line from that song. And they didn't understand anything about doctrine, about church. What's a Protestant? What's a Baptist?
[00:07:05] Speaker B: To resurrect a song the world hasn't sung for almost two millennia. What a compelling story that we would join hands with those who sang this first hymn.
World renowned singer songwriters, America's Chris Tomlin, Australia's Ben Fielding. What a moment. What an opportunity. I am so honored to be brough into this. So this is Hammy. Yeah, right.
Working with Nashville's finest alongside choirs and classical instruments.
Employing modern techniques and time tested traditions to recreate an ancient song and give it back to the world.
Welcome to the first hymn project,
[00:08:01] Speaker A: I said coming in 2025, it actually didn't come out till just recently, till 2026.
And because this took actually a little bit more to put together than what they had originally thought, as you saw, there are some very famous names, some very famous faces, some very famous voices that you will hear in this. And there's a few faces that you might not recognize because they brought in some minds from the original Coptic church and to give them an insight into this as well. And then they brought in some singers who in the background of this song, do honor. They honor it from the original language that this was once sung in.
And so you get those deep tones and that deep music along with the meaningful. We only get a little bit of the lines of the hymn.
And so it's.
The rest of it had to be built around that. And it honors the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
And then it's Ameen Amin. Amen.
Which nowadays, how we say Amen.
Amen. Amen.
Now, I don't talk about faith very often. I'm comfortable with my relationship with our Father, and I am comfortable with. It's like I. I know where I'm going when it's all said and done.
But I have. I disagree with other people. It's like, I don't think if you. I don't think you have to follow a particular doctrine. I don't think if you go to church every Sunday, that doesn't make you a better person.
I don't think just by singing Christian hymns that that makes you an automatically better person if that's the only thing that you're doing in your life. And I don't think that just by being a good person is enough.
Now, that's a very controversial idea. I'm not going to go too deep into that because I believe that everybody's relationship with religion is individual.
And we have to know what feels right to us and what works for us may not work for other people.
Now, that's also a very controversial idea, but this movie doesn't do that. This movie tries to tie it all together. There are ties of Christianity, there are ties of Judaism, there are ties of Islam. There are ties just all across the.
The board with this and how this works into the final message and the final song that they come up with.
So is this a movie for you?
If, like I said, if you like religious movies, if you like historical movies, if you like religious historical movies, this one is going to have a very wide appeal.
If you do not like documentaries or you do not like religious movies, or you do not like historical things.
This is going to have a very limiting audience.
Now, mind you, I say limiting. It's still a broad audience, but it's.
You really have to have an interest in this. You have to have a very poignant. You have to like be aimed right at this to get your attention. And some people have like heard the podcast that heard Chris Tomlin talking about this song and that might interest them. Like I said, it's though it appeals to a much wider audience. It's going to have a very narrow audience because of some of the things that are discussed, some of the topics and some things I, as a personal critic, so leaving my personal feelings out of it, but as like basically looking at it. Oh, sorry, hit my microphone there.
But kind of looking at this not only from a personal perspective, but from a critic perspective, and I'm like, okay, how does this appeal? Is there, is there stuff that people may disagree with, with this? Is this one of those things that just everybody's going to agree with? Does this have a wide audience? Does this have a narrow audience?
Age appropriateness. Age appropriateness, Like I said, I'm giving this an innocent rating. So a tarot age appropriateness is not going to be an issue. But score wise, I am going to upset some people, hands down, if you are very staunch in your belief system, if you are very staunch with loving Christian music, and if you are very staunch with loving Christian historical things like that, and if you are like very concerned or not concerned, but tarot. Stop it.
Sorry.
But there, like I said, it's going to have a wide appeal but a narrow audience. And so I have to take that into account, as difficult as that is on some of these.
And I really contemplated on this one for a bit, but I am giving the first hem just a 5 out of 10 on the deputy scale. Now. I know, I know, I know, I know that's going to ruffle some feathers.
I mean, through and through that is going to ruffle some feathers. But like I said, it's. It's very beautifully done. It's very beautifully put together. And I just opened my spreadsheet just to make sure that that's the number I had put down. And that is.
But yeah, I am giving. That's just a 5 out of 10 on the deputy scale. Now, that doesn't mean that they're like people who are very staunch in religion. People who are very staunch and Christian has religious history. I can't really.
The history of theology, I can't talk. You ever have those days that you're. That's all folks, but people who are very staunch in that will probably give this movie an 8, maybe even a 10. Which I mean, I never give a 10. There's no such thing as a perfect movie, but I could see how people would grade this that on a personal level.
So I want people to try to take that into account. If this is one that you want to check out, it really crosses a lot of boundaries, but not in a bad way, but at the same time it does so in such a way that it's not going to appeal to everyone.
So is this one for you? That's for you to decide, but I hope that this review will help at least a little bit.
