Episode Transcript
[00:00:01] Speaker A: Hello, my friends, and welcome back to Movie Deputy Reviews where we are here on day seven of our 12 Days of Christmas. Now, today's movie, if you are on our YouTube channel or on our rumble, you can already see the poster scene of the movie we are talking about. You may be thinking, wait, how does this fit in? Remember how I said all these movies of our 12 Days of Christmas have something in common? Well, I'm sure Godzilla threw some of you off. And likewise, this one is probably going to throw a few people off too. The movie we are talking about today is called Truth. It came out in 2015.
And this is a story that made a lot of people really uncomfortable.
There was some strong language. This is based on actual events. It's not 100% true to form as it's a movie, not a documentary, but it's very telling and very informative as it kind of goes along and shares that the information that it does with us. Now, you may be thinking, wait a minute, this is way too serious for Christmas trivia. But like I said, All 12 of the movies we are talking about during our 12 days of Christmas all have something in common. And if you can figure out what that is, there is a pretty substantial gift in place. Like if you can solve just that one thing even without the rest, you will be. If you. If only one person figures it out, then they'll win the prize. If there's multiple people that figure it out, we will have a drawing of all of the correct submissions to determine the winner. And the prize, just for that part of it, is a $25 gift card to either Amazon or a theater of your choice and a Movie Deputy tote bag. So that's going to be a lot of fun even kind of figuring that out. I'm hoping to have a bunch of winners this time around.
So it's going to be a lot of fun. It's an adventure. And I love that you guys are coming along with me on this adventure. It's always a lot of fun.
So I am giving this movie, Truth, a guilty rating. It deals with a lot of really intense things as the story is told. A lot of people never even heard of this movie. And surprisingly, it's got Robert Redford, it's got Cate Blanchett, it's got a lot of other big names in this story.
And so how this didn't come, I mean, didn't get more attention back in the day, I'm not sure. Maybe you have heard of it, maybe you've seen it. I would. I always welcome feedback on that as well.
I do want to share what I did for the podcast image on this one. So as you can see, here's the poster, the podcast image, I squared it off. I kind of changed the lettering just a little bit and just kind of added a filter on it and just to kind of make it a little bit more intense than what it is. So again, I'm going to show the poster again and then over to our podcast image. So if you are listening on our podcast format, I encourage you to come over to our YouTube or to our Rumble and check out the video portion. You get to, you can get to experience the trailer and you get to see all the weird facial expressions. And I'm not Italian, but I talk with my hands. So it's just how that goes. It's definitely interesting, but it's always, I, I have fun with it. I hope you guys are having fun with it as well. But let's jump on over and I'll share with you the trailer for the movie Truth.
[00:03:25] Speaker B: Why'd you get into it?
[00:03:26] Speaker A: Okay, I'm pausing that. I'm gonna back that up a minute because I'm not sure what was going on with the audio there for a second here. And as if you are, like I said on our video for it, you can see that this movie is actually is a rated R movie. So again, like I said, it is definitely a guilty rating on this.
Let's try this again, hopefully.
[00:03:47] Speaker B: Why did you get into journalism?
Curiosity.
Why'd you get into.
[00:03:55] Speaker A: Ladies and gentlemen, I can't believe I'm not sure what was going on there.
[00:03:57] Speaker B: Dan Rather.
[00:04:02] Speaker C: I'm the producer. I put the team together. We have Lucy Scott to run point.
[00:04:06] Speaker A: Colonel Roger Charles worked Abu Ghraib for us.
[00:04:09] Speaker C: Mike Smith was a researcher for us back in 2000.
[00:04:11] Speaker B: What's our next move?
[00:04:12] Speaker C: I might have something for the election.
[00:04:14] Speaker A: The President of the United States may have gone AWOL from the military.
He never even showed up.
[00:04:21] Speaker B: Those parts of his file, they didn't like, they tossed in a waste basket.
[00:04:24] Speaker C: Do you have these documents?
[00:04:27] Speaker A: This is such a controversial story. Like I said, this is based on an actual story at the time.
And there was actually once upon a time when journalism cared about the truth.
You know, as I say, once upon a time, because there's a lot of them nowadays that just, it's all about who is the most sensational, who's the most clickbait, who's the most made up stuff just to try to get the attention of the voters or to try to Sway people politically one way or the other.
And it's like I said, it's not what it once was. And this was a story that.
I'll kind of let you decide for yourself if this was more of a propaganda story or if this was actually something to this.
So keep. Keep following along with me. I promise it'll be worth it.
[00:05:13] Speaker B: These really are the holy grail of documents.
[00:05:15] Speaker C: You've got three hours.
[00:05:16] Speaker B: We're out of time.
[00:05:18] Speaker C: Start outputting.
[00:05:19] Speaker B: Go, go, go, go, go. Tonight, we have new information on the president's military service. Here's to a great story.
[00:05:28] Speaker C: Hey, Mary. These blogs are saying that the memos can be recreated in Microsoft Word.
[00:05:33] Speaker B: Several experts have raised serious questions. They're going to start an investigation. This is bad.
[00:05:39] Speaker C: They do.
They do not get to smack us just for asking the question.
[00:05:45] Speaker A: And that's the thing. It's not just about asking the question.
And yes, there is definitely freedom of speech, but freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences.
[00:05:55] Speaker B: They don't want to talk to your source now.
It's bad.
[00:06:01] Speaker C: I never should have asked a question.
[00:06:03] Speaker B: You gotta make your case, Lonnie.
[00:06:05] Speaker C: You have to fight.
[00:06:07] Speaker B: Somebody has got to confirm those memos. It's. This isn't a trial. This is a hunt.
What we are talking about is you bringing your politics into your reporting.
[00:06:24] Speaker C: I did nothing of the kind.
[00:06:25] Speaker B: Where does politics not enter into this?
[00:06:27] Speaker C: Our story was about whether the president fulfilled his service. Nobody wants to talk about that. They want to talk about fonts and forgeries and they hope to guard. The truth gets lost in the scrum.
[00:06:40] Speaker A: And that's really where things delve is. I mean, it's. Stories aren't just pure stories anymore. There's always something more to it. There's. Oh, there. There appears to always be an agenda. There's always something from one side or the other. It's like I. I heard a lot growing up that there's three sides to every story. There's this side, this side, and then there's the truth.
So. But where this falls on that. That spectrum, I'll let you be the one to decide.
But, yeah, we're back over here now. So this is one that I had had the review up on moviedevity.com since the movie did come out back then.
But I do want to share that review with you as well. And don't worry, I'm going to be getting to the score again.
This is a very controversial story.
Like I said, you're probably scratching your head trying to figure out how this one aligns with all of the other movies that we've been talking about with this.
But I mean, I kind of like a little bit of stumpers here and there. And plus this one is a good one to bring to light with kind of everything else that's going on right now.
But the original review that had been on moviedebity.com that you can now find below is One of the biggest political stories in history turned out to be one of the most controversial.
A reporter got a lead on one of the candidates in the 2004 presidential election and decided to run with it.
As sources were tracked down, little information was actually known about the validity of the documents in question.
The deeper they dug, the more they had a story that they wanted to share. Once it went public, there was no turning back. That is, until the information that they had was discredited. Piece by piece, it slowly unraveled, leaving those responsible for running the story in the crosshairs of the public.
What happened next would change journalism forever.
All because of those that wanted to find a story where there wasn't one to be found or. Let me do that again. All because of those that wanted to find a story where there wasn't one to be found or was there through the final investigation.
Sorry, I am having my time being twisted. I'm twisting over my tongue today.
Though the final investigation determined that there was not a bias in the hunt for this story, it didn't stop their lives from being forever changed. Come along for this journey as you see it from both sides. You see the hunger and the reasoning of these individuals that chased after the story. And you also see the network's reaction to what was happening. This was unfolding right in front of our eyes, and yet we had no idea. This is an amazing piece that is presented in such a way that it is truly up to you to make up your own mind.
The only problem is that is with. The only problem with it is that regardless of what side you're on, a seed gets planted that causes doubt.
Experience this through.
Experience this through the.
How. Why did I word this like this?
Sometimes going back over these, it's like I have to just question. It's like, was I tired or what? But it says, experience this through this portrayal and decide for yourself.
I probably would not have worded it quite that way since, I mean, nowadays, because it's like I was getting tripped up on it just reading it, much less trying to read it out loud. I'm like, why did I word it like that?
I guess I thought it made sense at the moment, but kind of makes sense as I experienced this through.
I mean, like what you're experiencing here and then to kind of decide for yourself.
So you may be wondering, okay, based on that review, you probably can't really tell where I ended up with Movie Deputy on this one.
Well, this is actually going to surprise you. This movie ended up with an 8 out of 10 on the deputy scale. I'm serious. It got an 8 out of a 10. And you may be thinking, wait, if this is so biased and if this is so bad and if this is that, this, that and the other thing, it is a very powerful story and it is presented very well, even with all of the Hollywood bias and bull crap that kind of goes along with it. But occasionally the decent stories like this do kind of squeak through. Hollywood aside, through all the other mess, everything.
But if you think you can trust the media, I, I don't know where to even begin.
I.
There's, there's biases in everything, but there's flat out lies in most of the mainstream media nowadays. And it's just, it's half truths or it's something picked from here and something picked from here and then put together, like what the BBC did with one of Trump's speeches and things like that. It's like they just, they, they nitpick and they'll show you this, partner, this part, but they won't show you, like, the other parts that add context to, like, what happened because they want to. It's about deceit and deceiving the American public and the viewership and ratings, and it's kind of all mixed up in that. And so where the truth lies is somewhere in between.
I myself, I tend to watch things like Oan Newsmax and I do a lot of my own research.
I don't follow mainstream news. I don't watch Fox News, I don't watch cnn, I don't watch msnbc. I don't watch any of the mainstream news stations. They're just.
I don't even know where to begin. It's just, it's a mess.
So shout out to hashtag Newsmax house to oan.
That's probably where I get the majority of my information, or at least it kind of sends me down the rabbit holes of at least what I want to look up and find out for myself.
But back to our Christmas trivia on day seven, which of course is today of our Christmas trivia. This one, I, I think this one might be a little bit easier to figure out. I mean, if you know how to use a search engine, this one should probably be pretty easy. But our day seven question is what Christmas character was created by Montgomery Ward?
Now, for those not old enough to remember, Montgomery Ward was a, was a store. It was like Sears, JCPenney, things like that.
But what Christmas character did they create?
So that is our question of the day.
So I hope that you're having a lot of fun with these. I know I am. If you want to a rundown on all of the prizes that we are going to be giving away, don't worry, I'm going to be doing touching on them again as we're going. But I covered everything on day six yesterday, so be sure to check that out. You're not going to want to miss a single minute of that because I was going over so many different giveaways and everything that we are doing with this.
And so I hope you're having a lot of fun with this. I've gotten so much feedback, we are well into the four digits now of submissions and things like that, so. And it's interesting to see some of the answers that people are coming up with. I'm just kind of going okay, but it's definitely entertaining and I'm surprisingly seeing a lot of people getting a lot of them right.
And so I'm hoping keep, keep submitting your answers or if you, if you want to wait till the very end, you can do that as well. And you can submit the answers on the contact us page of moviedepity.com which all the message messages come directly to me or you can send them directly to moviedebitymail.com so I hope you are having as much fun with this as I am.
