[00:00:00] Speaker A: Hello my friends, and welcome back to Movie Deputy Reviews where we are here on day eight of our 12 Days of Christmas. Are you excited? I know I am. This is an incredible adventure. I love the answers that I've been getting.
Some of them are right, a spot on the money and other ones are so far off in the other field, it's like I wonder if you misheard the question.
There was a couple answers to a couple of them that I'm just as late.
Okay, wrong holiday.
Specifically to the what character was created by Montgomery Ward?
I had an answer to that one. That was not even the right holiday. So if you know who you are, you know that if you answered that, I would suggest maybe try again.
It never hurts. So. And I keep submitting your answers. Keep submitting them. I love it. Last year I did a thing where it's like wait till the end to submit your answers. And if you want to do that this time, that's fine. If you want to wait till the all the way down with day 12 and you want to submit your answers, you will have until midnight on Christmas to submit them. And then I will be announcing the winners that the following week beyond that. So you can participate as we're going and submit them on a day to day basis or you can submit them all at once at the end. That's completely up to you.
But either way, I'm hoping you're having as much fun with it as I am. Again, we are on day eight of our 12 Days of Christmas and today we are talking about the movie the 13th Floor. Now you're like, what?
It's probably a movie many of you have never even heard of, but it is a story that you know well because it came out the same time this within months of another huge blockbuster movie of a similar type mindset. The whole tagline thing of the 13th floor is question reality.
And if you are on our YouTube or on our rumble, you can see the poster right here on my side here that I have and you kind of maybe it's like, oh, okay, that's kind of an unusual thing, but that's kind of the fun of it. And of course, if you're listening on our podcast, I welcome you to come on over and check out the video side of this as well. You get just a little bit more on this side. You can see the trailer and you can see the posters and get to see. Sometimes my words don't often convey what my face does because my face kind of has its own, has a mind of its own. I could be saying one thing in my face is kind of going.
So that that makes for an interesting kind of whole set of things, as that goes too. Now, for this poster for the podcast image, all I did was basically just square it off. So I took the poster and as you can see here, I just kind of just turned it into a square because for podcast purposes they require like a pretty perfectly square image. And since movie posters are not square, I have to sometimes modify them a little bit. And I didn't want to modify this one too much. I felt that it was really kind of strong, even on its own, just because of some of the graphics and everything that are involved with it. It kind of looks like Real World meets Tron. And we're going to kind of get into that a little bit too.
But you may be wondering, okay, if you're following along, you know, all that these, all of our 12 days of Christmas movies are going to have something in common. And that is one of the trivia things as well.
Some of these last couple movies may have thrown you for a loop. I had some people guessing some stuff having just to do with sci fi or having to do with flying and things like that, and just a couple other. One of the things had thought it was to do with spaceships, but I mean, I. I love hearing the theories on that. It's interesting seeing how people's minds work on things like that. But before I get into all this movie, a whole lot I want to share with you the trailer for this movie. And maybe that might help understand the. There is some scenes in the trailer that are a little bit violent, so I just wanted to notify people ahead of time. This movie is getting a guilty rating, in case you were curious. But let's jump on over and check out this trailer.
Hopefully I restart it.
[00:04:04] Speaker B: I say ignorance is bliss.
For the first time in my life, I agree.
I wish I had never uncovered the awful truth. Truth, Please think I killed Hauler.
[00:04:23] Speaker A: What?
[00:04:24] Speaker B: They may be right.
[00:04:29] Speaker A: And for the those who can't see the video right now, it. This is based on the award winning novel Simulacron 3 by Daniel F. G. I know I totally mispronounced that, but that's what this movie is actually based on.
[00:04:44] Speaker B: Did Han ever mention to you that he had a daughter? You kidding me? So the whole thing's what, a giant computer game?
[00:04:51] Speaker A: No, not. And if that voice sounds familiar, Allstate commercials.
Like I've mentioned stuff before in some of my other podcasts that sometimes people just get into these roles and that's what they become known for. And this, the guy from the Allstate commercials, when as soon as I heard his voice, even before I saw his face, it's like, yep, you know exactly who it is at all.
[00:05:11] Speaker B: It doesn't need a user to interact with it to function. While my mind is jacked in, I'm walking around experiencing 1937. My body stuff stays here.
[00:05:24] Speaker A: Now, if you're watching the video here with me, you're noticing that this transition part of the trailer is also transition part of the movie. It feels very much like the TV show Sliders. Like the thing when they were sliding from Universal Universe. That's exactly the graphic that looks like this, that is used for this. So the movies are not connected in any way, shape or form or to the series. But it's just interesting that the graphic is so similar.
Hey, watch out, buddy.
[00:05:56] Speaker B: You own this place.
It's mine.
I even has its perfumes man over me. Real or imagined, Something wrong.
[00:06:19] Speaker A: Can't just plug your brain into this.
[00:06:21] Speaker B: Machine and not expect to be affected by it. Hey, what you do to the world?
[00:06:24] Speaker A: Turned it off. I don't know. I just had this funny feeling that we met before.
[00:06:28] Speaker B: Why you with our mind? These people are real.
They are as real as human and me.
What is real?
Is this real?
None of this is real.
[00:06:50] Speaker A: The 13th floor.
But. So that kind of gives you a little bit of an idea. Now, you may have heard some things that may remind you of another movie like Matrix, because it's. You're plugging in and you're going to an entirely different world than the reality. And it kind of plays into that. Like I said, as you can see, the poster kind of hints a little bit to Tron.
This movie is actually. And just referring to the notes on my phone on this.
But it's. If you mixed all, like all of these ideas together, you kind of get what the 13th floor is. But you mix Great Gatsby with London Fields, Matrix, Tron and Inception.
Now you're probably kind of just going, huh?
Because in a way, my brain was doing that too.
And the thing is, this movie came out within two months of when Matrix came out.
And so it's like, okay, if they hadn't come out in the same time frame, if this one had come out beforehand, like if. If there was like a bigger thing, it's like, which one would be the bigger hit?
Now, this one was a lot more low budget. I'm not, not criticizing the movie for that at all, but it definitely was not it didn't have the budget Matrix had, but the story is. That has some merit to it. There is. There's something that just kind of draws you into this story and the whole thing with Deja Vu and the realities work together. Imagine kind of plugging your brain into something and then waking up in 1937 and basically living in two different lives. Only.
Oh, I won't give that away. That's not. That would be a spoiler. And don't worry, I'm not going to do that. No spoilers ever here on Movie Deputy. I absolutely despise them. So I don't ever want to do that to anybody else. So.
But basically you've got this scientist who is designing this program and it allows them to go back to 1937 and. And in doing so, it's setting things in motion that can change things even in the modern day.
So how it plays out and what happens, like I said, I won't spoil any of that for you, but it's definitely, it's definitely intriguing and there's a few twists along the way. Now, mind you, it's not without its faults. Now, the biggest fault that was driving my brain absolutely insane when I was watching this is when I'm watching a movie at home. I turn on the captions because if they're saying a name or if the name of a place or something, I want to be able to see how it's spelled so that I can put it in my notes correctly.
And this one, I don't know what company they hired to do the. The captions on it probably was in the credits, but I missed that. But the captions matched up. I'd probably say 90, 80, 85% of the movie and the rest of it, they were just either completely wrong with what was being said on screen or they were either ahead of or behind the.
What was happening on. And it wasn't like the movie was lagging on my end. There was no lagging or anything like that. And I backed it up and I kept replaying it over certain areas. I'm like, okay, is this on my end or is this on theirs? And then it just kept on continuing through the movie. So if you need to watch the closed captions when you're watching this, that might be something to be aware of because like I said, it drove my brain absolutely bonkers.
And you notice I mentioned a lot of different tie ins with Tron and with Inception. There's a. There are a lot of references to the Inception type mindset and things that are happening in Inception here. And so I don't know what ideas inspired the other. If this do. If this book that was written, the book, the, the book that this movie was based off of, if that inspired some of the other stories too, or like which one came first, the chicken or the egg type thing. But it definitely was an intriguing, intriguing take on some of these. So is this one that you're going to want to check out?
I don't know, but it's at least worth it if you're curious. And like I said, all of the movies on these, on this 12 days of Christmas do have that special thing in common.
So I'm hoping you're able to put the pieces together. Now, I've noticed in some of the movies that I've done in, in the trailers that there's been kind of a, a bit of a hit. There's, there's some, there's something in the trailers during. Not in all of them, but in some of them that is actually the answer. So will that be enough to figure it out? I guess you'll have to find out for sure. And if, if, like I said, if you're listening on the podcast format, come over and check out our YouTube or our rumble so that you can experience these for yourself firsthand and really kind of delve deeper into it. So now you're probably wondering, score wise, where I ended up with the 13th floor. Well, because of some continuity, just very mild continuity stuff with the movie. But then the captions thing really got me. Not like, not that I'm holding the movie responsible for that, but they kind of go hand in hand a little bit.
But then just some. There's just some little things that I was getting hung up on in the movie that just were like, it doesn't really add to it and it's a little bit more of a distraction than part of the story. And they're just little things. Most people probably wouldn't even notice this, notice this stuff. But I get so detail oriented as I'm watching movies nowadays that I like, nitpick all the little stuff and kind of because of that is where I end, why I end up with the score I ended up with on this one of the kitties just jumped up on the desk with me. Quincy, Twin Quincy going, come over here.
Might actually luck out and get one of the kitties on the camera today. Quincy, come here.
Come here.
Oh, I said, Quincy.
Guess he's not going to cooperate.
But our tr. Oh, score wise, let me get back to that score. We ended up with a 5.75 out of 10 on the deputy scale. Now a 6 is watchable, good story, some flaws. A 5 is decent story, significant flaws. And as you can tell, this is a little bit closer to the sixth than to the five. But like I said, there's just a few things that I was getting hung up on that like I said, the regular everyday person might not notice, but that's one thing with being neurodivergent. I tend to notice a lot more of that stuff anyways, so.
But you're probably wondering if I'm going to get around to the day 8 of 12 question. Now this one, this one is actually if you use your search engine, if you know this one, great.
If you have a search engine, this one's actually really easy to find. So I'm kind of mixing it up a little bit with easier and harder. Now this one is a two part question, so I want to let you know that right up front there's two parts to this.
The first part is what is the longest Christmas song?
And the second part of the question is how long is it? Now I'm looking not just for a generalized time, I'm looking for the hours and minutes.
Yes, I said hours.
So this is an interesting I think it's an interesting question. I I try to just search the most unusual type of things to for the trivia because I don't want it to be of like, okay, which reindeer has a red nose? That's not really one of my questions. But it's like that would be entirely too simple.
So I want to have a little bit more thought than that into some of these.
But I don't want to make them too difficult at the same time. But overall, I hope you are having as much fun with this adventure as I am. And I will be back of course tomorrow for day nine.
