Show Notes

Arthur is a dog like no other, he goes above and beyond for the ones he cares about. The question is will they do the same for him? This is not the typical feel good story but it's one that will remain with you for a long time.

[00:00:00] Hello once again, and welcome back to another episode of movie Deputy podcasts, where I hope you thoroughly enjoyed yesterday, where you get the rare and elusive two episodes in one day. I am just so glad I did not lose afterlife. I was just so. Just wondering what in the heck I had done, because I was like, okay, this makes no sense. Where is this? [00:00:25] And I am just so relieved that I found that. And I hope that you're not going to give up on Frozen Empire too soon because like I said, that one's also worth definitely watching. And obviously, I'm not going to be talking about those today as I'm going to be talking about a new movie for you. And this one, I'm going to approach this one a little bit differently than most because this one is going to be a hard one for many people to watch. It's a very emotional movie. [00:00:56] It's a movie you become very emotionally invested in. And if you've ever been a fan of old Yeller, where the red Fern grows. Zarina, what are you doing? Stop it. [00:01:09] Sorry. Once again, getting on one of my kitties. Zarina, stop it. [00:01:15] Sorry, guys. [00:01:18] She is just being a pill tonight. But like I said, if you've ever been a fan of old Yeller, where the red fern grows, Marley and me along those kinds of lines of the stories, but you've also been a big fan of Benji, Lassie, homeward bound, kind of all those ones as well. [00:01:39] You kind of are going to get a feel of where this one might be going. Now, as you know, I will never spoil a movie on that, but there is something special about this one because it's actually based on a true story. Now, some of those other ones might have been as well. I mean, we know Lassie was a popular Hollywood dog, but there's not too many dogs quite like Arthur. [00:02:04] And if you haven't already guessed, the movie we're talking about today is Arthur the king. Now, this movie, I'm going to actually kind of surprise people. I am giving Arthur the king an innocent rating, even with what I'm just referring to on that. So it is getting an innocent rating on the deputy scale. And as for the score, I'm going to make you wait on that for a few minutes here as we kind of talk about the movie. But this one is a bunch of people running the adventure racing world championships. And you've got this one team versus this other team. [00:02:40] It's a bunch of teams that are competing in this. And it's basically a grueling multiple step race where there's running and there's hiking, and there's all these different challenges and there's kayaking and there's cycling and just a little bit of everything. [00:02:56] And what's kind of the big deal about this race is you can take whatever path you want. You just have to check in at the checkpoints. And depending on the path that you take, you might have a shortcut, and it might actually be longer than what you anticipate. But it's up to each individual team to make their decision. And the thing is, before the race even begins, you have Michael, who has tried to do this race in the past and gave up on the first had. And it wasn't just all him. I mean, there was some stuff with his teammates as well, some health issues. So it wasn't just about quitting, but because of the way that that happened, he found it very difficult to find sponsors. And for a race such as this, you have to have sponsors. It's very expensive to do. And so, okay, you might be wondering, what does this have to do with Arthur? And I'm getting there. I'm getting there. [00:03:56] But he finally gets the team together, and he finds a sponsor who's willing to back him, but it's not enough. And so you'll actually learn more about that as the race continues. And I won't give that away either, because that would be a spoiler. [00:04:10] But there's kind of an important line that he hears from his dad before a lot of the race and stuff even starts. And it's such a fitting line to life, not just to the movie, but to life itself. And, yes, this movie does focus mainly on Arthur, but there's a bigger story here. But the thing that his dad tells him is that the grass in your yard is only as green as you grow it. [00:04:35] Now, that really says a lot about people, because it really only is green as you grow it. And I've got a few listeners out there that know me personally and can appreciate the humor with the whole getting the grass to grow, if you know what I mean. [00:04:53] We've been in our home five years this year, and my husband is still in the process of. [00:04:59] He does all of our outdoor landscaping stuff, and he's still trying to get grass growing in certain parts of the yard. So that has been a little bit of a challenge. It's been humorous at times. [00:05:11] And let's just say anything involving the tiller, I just have to shake my head at this point. [00:05:19] Like I said, if you know me personally, you get that reference. If not. I might tell that story one day. I'll have to wait and see. It depends if we ever get a yard. [00:05:28] But that's a whole other ball wax on that. But like I said, Michael gets his team together and finally gets a sponsor. And so they go down and they begin the race. Well, they realize that there is this stray dog around, and so he throws him a meatball because he seems like a sweet dog. [00:05:47] Then, as they're going on the race and they have gone, like, a couple hundred miles from where they started, they see this dog and they're like, okay, we have cycled. We have run. We have done all these things. How is this dog here? And Arthur ends up being really key to how this team runs their race. And so they help him. He helps them. It's a very close knit relationship that they have. It was very reminiscent of some of the Benji movies and very reminiscent of homeward bound, except with humans along the way. But, like, I did make the comparison to the other movies as well. For those who are really sensitive to things happening to animals very specifically, this may be a difficult one to watch. I'm not saying that anything necessarily bad happens, but I'm also not saying it has a happy ending, either. [00:06:47] This one will take your emotions through the highest highs and the lowest lows and everywhere in between. So be prepared to take your heart on about the journey that this race is going on, because you are going to feel every emotion along the way as this story is told. Zarina, please stop it. Sorry. She's batting stuff around on my desk now. [00:07:13] Silly, silly kitties. But. So when the final stretch of the race comes up, you know me. No spoilers. [00:07:22] They are at the finish line, and the finish line is within sight. [00:07:27] And something happens to one of the teams that affects them being able to finish, and that has to do with Arthur. So it may mean that they're going to win. It may mean that they're not going to win. I won't spoil that for you, but I will tell you that it is key to this whole movie. Now, if you decide to come and experience this for yourself and watch this, like I said, I am giving this an innocent rating. So even if you wanted to bring the younger ones, this one is safe for that. [00:08:03] But like I said, come prepared with some tissues, because you will definitely need mean. It is not up for debate. Zarina, please stop. You cannot play with the cords on mommy's desk. [00:08:18] Zoza, stop it. [00:08:21] Just shaking my water bottle at her. I don't actually have anything doing that she doesn't like water at all. So if I shake the water bottle, she runs. [00:08:31] So, getting back to the movie, if you have made it that far in the movie, I highly advise that you stay into the credits because it has information on the people in the movie and where their lives went after this movie. [00:08:45] Like I said, it's a very important tale. [00:08:49] It's one that if you enjoyed, like I said, the movies of yesteryear and the ones basically any movie that's ever involved a dog that has ripped your heart out and gave it back to you in a million pieces while still keeping a few pieces for itself, this is going to be a good one. You're probably wondering about the score I gave Arthur the King. Now, this one is only because I had to really sit back because personally I wanted to give it a certain score. Critically, I'm leaning a different direction. Personally, as good as this one was, I just had a hard time really going much above about a six, six and a quarter. [00:09:32] Deputy wise, I could not go quite that low. I actually am giving Arthur the king a seven out of ten on the deputy scale. [00:09:42] There are numerous parts in this movie that are challenging to the mind and to the emotions, and I'm trying to think how to word things. So I do not give you any sort of spoilers in that. [00:09:59] But I will say that this is one of those ones that will remain with you for a long time, long after the credits are done. If you feel free to look up the teams and look up the true stories on this, you're more than welcome to, of course, but be forewarned, if you kind of look up a lot of these things before you go see this movie, it's going to kind of spoil the movie. So kind of just play that by ear. One of the biggest things in the movie that I personally have. [00:10:31] It's something that just personally kind of just hit me wrong and it's just a personal thing with me. But suffering is a skill. [00:10:40] Now, I deal with a lot of chronic medical conditions and I deal with a lot of different health issues. And so I don't know if I would definitely say that suffering is a skill. I have learned to adapt my life around things like that, and I think that's kind of what this movie deals with a bit, too. So, like I said, if this is one that you've been debating on seeing or you're going to wait till it's out on instant video or however you want to do that, like I said, personally, I was probably in the lower sixes but critically, based on how the story was told, the information presented and how it was done, and the fact of how memorable this is, I am. Like I said, I'm going to go ahead and give it a seven out of ten. Again, I'm giving it an instant rating. So like I said, if this is one you want to check out, feel free and I would love to hear your feedback on it. If you ever want to send me some information on what you thought. [00:11:31] Until next time, my friendlies, I will talk to you soon. Bye.
