[00:00:01] Speaker A: Hello, my friends, and welcome back to Movie Deputy Reviews. Today we are talking about the new movie, Heart of the Beast.
Now, if you have been seeing anything on TV at all about this and you are an animal lover, this is probably one that you're going to want to check out. Now, that's based purely on the commercials is why I'm saying that. I think I need to. I'm going to get. I've actually seen this now and I want to give a little bit more of a guarded heads up.
Now before I even play the trailer on this one for you, I think it's important to say that this movie is getting a guilty rating.
Very clearly a guilty rating. Is it safe for younger audiences? Maybe if they're supervised. But I think the adults should watch it first.
This movie is going to be very, very intense, especially for people dealing with military style, military ptsd, shell shock, things like that, or people that cannot deal with things happening to animals. Now, the biggest question that I have gotten from this one, even before I watch this movie, does the dog die?
It's not really a spoiler on this one.
I want to reassure people the dog does not die.
I'm not going to spoil anything for you, but hopefully that will put a few people's minds at ease.
That doesn't mean that there is not peril throughout the movie or that things don't happen to animals throughout the movie.
It is, like I said, for people sensitive to that, it's gonna be a big deal. For people sensitive to battle things that set off their ptsd.

I don't. I use a Dell all in one and I really don't want him tipping it over. That would not be good.
But back to this one. Like I said before I even get into the trailer, you're going to hear a lot of loud sounds and loud things like that happening in the trailer. The movie. Is that on steroids?
Now, that being said, it's not exactly the movie that you expect.
Is that a good thing or a bad thing?
If you listen to a lot of what the people are saying online about this, a lot of people love this movie.
There are a few that really are on edge because of this movie.
But let's check out the trailer. Before I even get into the story itself or what, I ended up scoring this on the movie. Deputy, scale.
So let's check it out together.
[00:02:43] Speaker B: Put it there, pal.
Damn, you're handsome.
It's okay. Come on. Just a bad dream. We're not there anymore.
[00:03:10] Speaker C: You are the.
[00:03:12] Speaker A: That happens a lot. Like I said, the flashbacks that Odin is the dog that Odin experiences a lot through this are. They're. They're intense. Especially for people who have experienced that themselves.
[00:03:26] Speaker C: First person I've ever seen this far out.
What kind of line of work are you in, James?
[00:03:32] Speaker B: Army Special Forces, retired.
[00:03:34] Speaker C: Hey, did I not notice some silver in your dog's mouth?
[00:03:38] Speaker B: Odin was a combat scouting dog. Target hit him in the mouth with a brick.
[00:03:42] Speaker C: Same asshole get his leg.
[00:03:44] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:03:44] Speaker C: I hope you gave that fell a piece of your mind.
[00:03:47] Speaker B: I shot him in the head.
[00:03:49] Speaker C: He shot him in the head.
This region here is the heart of the beast. Most folks learn that the hard way.
[00:04:14] Speaker B: Good job, bud.
We're just going to have to do this the hard way.
You can do it. I got you. Easy fell.
We can still do this.
We've been through worse.
[00:04:56] Speaker C: It's not the size of the dog in the fight that matters.
It's the size of the fight in the dog.
[00:05:03] Speaker B: You did that.
One last mission. We're not gonna die out here.

[00:05:21] Speaker C: All right,
[00:05:25] Speaker A: like I said, I'm not gonna spoil it by giving any part of the story away. I've just had so many people stressing so much about if the dog lives or dies. And so I. I know some people may technically consider that a spoiler, but I don't really consider that one. Because if that's what's going to make or break you watching this movie, I can put that at ease. But that's not giving anything away of the story itself. Like I said, the peril throughout this movie is intense.
I found myself while watching this, comparing it to the Revenant. If you've never seen that movie. I've watched it. I reviewed it. I very much disliked that movie because it's like three hours long and there's like 10 minutes of dialogue in the whole movie. But it's just basically going through the wilderness and this whole survival thing. Except he doesn't have anybody to talk to here. James has Odin to talk to. Brad Pitt is James. And of course, Odin is. Odie is the. He's the German shepherd.
And they are both military. He is retired Green Beret, Special Forces. And Odie was a very specialized trained canine unit. And they served together and they retired together. And here they are up in Alaska. They decide to go up to he flies up to Alaska with Odie and they. They land on a lake and they're camping out.
And then after they're done spending some time there and there's kind of some key parts of the story which I will, of course, I'm not going to give away, but they take off again. And then as you can see in the trailer that there's a plane crash. And when he crashes, him and Odie must find some way back to civilization.
And they realize it's about 56 miles that they have to trek to get to any sort of civilization.
And they're like, okay, we're injured, we're this. Obviously you saw that there was some sort of something happening with James of why they crashed. I'm not gonna even give that away of what happened there because like I said, that is a major spoiler. And like I said, there are things that do happen. They. There are. There's a lot of animal on animal violence. There's. It's quite graphic, quite gory at times.
And then there's the things of just that they have to do to protect themselves.
And it's not without injury, it's not without risk, it's not without peril, but. And there's even one scene that I couldn't help but find myself comparing it to a very memorable scene of Neverending Story.
Now, if you know the swamp of sadness from the Neverending Story, that might give you a hint as something that happens here.
Now, the. There's like a major line in this movie that he said, even in the trailer, it's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog.
And that I've heard from even some of my own family members who are retired military that it's really. It's what's in here more so than what's out there.
And it really becomes a battle of survival, not just against the elements, but against themselves as they are going through this.
At times it's a bit slow, but whether or not that adds or takes away from it is going to completely depend on your perspective. It is ultimately a story of survival. Originally, I did think that this was based on a true story and it did not say that at all in the credits. So my apologies to anybody I might have spoken to in person about that that I really did think that this was based on, at least inspired by a true story. And there was nothing of that. But you could easily see how something like this could be and how it ends. It's.
It's both a triumph and a tragedy in the way that it ends. Now, I already gave a little bit of that away letting you know that Odie does make it.
But how, what, what else kind of happens along that way?
It's not so easy to explain. Am I going to say that James lives or dies? Am I going to say that the person that there's. There's somebody they run into along the way that lives or dies? What about other animals along the way?
They're in the heart of the Alaskan wilderness, so you can imagine things that they have to do to survive.
And it's just like I said, it's at times a slow watch, but it's the parts where anything is going on is intense. And so I just want people to be prepared before they go see this. There's going to be some people who really appreciate the fact that this is done the way it's done. And they're going to. There's people that think it's an absolute amazing movie.
Even when I went to see this in the theater, I went to see it like everybody else I had. I ran into people who were like, oh, this was fantastic. And there are other people just leaving kind of quiet. And he's like, I served this. This was real.
And that was, that was all he said.
So to kind of give you a little bit of a heads up on that, but that's one of the reasons I am giving this a guilty rating.
Now, score wise, on Heart of the Beast, I'm probably going to obsess some of you, probably a lot of you on that. But score wise, I look at all aspects of the movie and like I said, I found myself comparing this to Revenant. I found myself comparing this to some other stories and things like that. Just with some certain parts of this, it's like you can kind of see at least where somebody got some inspiration from this, from some other films. But you can also appreciate the realism that's going on here.
Ultimately, with Heart of the Beast, I keep saying the Heart of the Beast, but it's just Heart of the Beast is the name of the movie. But ultimately I did end up scoring Heart of the beast just a 5.75 out of 10 on the Deputy scale.
It was, it's watchable, it's a decent story.
I know many are going to call this a good story or a great story, but just some of the things being questionable content. And I debated about going up in the sevens, I really did because 7 is watchable. Good story, questionable content. Watchable, memorable, questionable content. Sorry, this one's watchable. Definitely memorable in a lot of ways, good and bad.
Definitely questionable content. But there's also a lot of it where it's like even just kind of looking around in the theater, I was noticing other people like messing with their phones.
The movie was. It's difficult to keep you engaged unless you have been in situations such as this.
It's not one that is going to be engaging throughout.
You're gonna find yourself like with your mind wandering at least in some scenes.
And so that definitely kind of takes away from that a little bit. But hence why the score kind of came down a little bit from that. So it's a watchable, decent story.
Six is some flaws, five is significant flaws. And I felt it was a little closer to 6 than a 5, hence the 5.75.
I hope that helps a little bit. I hope that this will help prepare you if this is one that you are planning to see.
