[00:00:00] Speaker A: Hello, my friends, and welcome back to Movie Deputy Reviews. Where, if you hadn't already guessed, we are talking about the new Prada movie. Now, which one am I referring to? If you are completely out of the loop, I am talking about the new Devil wears Prada 2.
This one is coming out 20 years after. And I love when movies do this. This one also takes place 20 years later in the movie.
I like when they follow timelines like that. Okay? Like the whole Mission Impossible. Don't get me started on that. Of how they. It's 35 years, but it's 30 years. But it's 29. And, yeah, I could go down a whole rabbit hole on that. But I'm not going to. I may be a little distracted during today's show. I've got Patero up here on the desk with me. And we're going to see how well he's going to behave. He hasn't been feeling too good, so Mommy's going to baby in him a little bit extra. So you might get a view of him on the video. He might make an appearance.
But today, the appearance that we are looking for is Miranda Pries Lee, Andy Sachs and Emily.
Now, if you're familiar with the first double Devil Wears Prada movie. You're familiar with who these characters are. If not, this is a total chick flick. Sorry about that notification on my computer.
But this one is.
It follows the other one really well. It picks up truly, 20 years later in the story where Runway magazine has evolved. And the Elias. The Elias Clark published publications has evolved and where that leads everybody. Has Andy become a writer for a major publication?
It. Did Emily pursue her passion for everything? Fashion? Is Miranda still the Beast in charge of it all? Or is there some beauty behind the Beast?
I guess we're going to delve into that and so much more. But first, I want to let you know that the Devil Wears Proud to does have a guilty rating.
Just some of the content is not necessarily the safest for younger viewers.
Nothing like over the top. There's some language, and there's some risque situations involved, but nothing. It's nothing like over the top, but just enough that it's got a guilty rating.
But before we get too far into this, and don't worry, I'm going to let you know the score. That's going to be a surprise to many of you. But let's check out the trailer.
[00:02:34] Speaker B: Runway, it's not just a magazine.
It's a global icon.
A winding road that brings us back together again.
[00:02:54] Speaker C: Hello.
[00:02:55] Speaker B: Well, look what T.J. maxx dragged in.
[00:02:58] Speaker C: Sorry, who is this? Do you know her? Do I know her? I'm Andy Sachs. Andrea.
[00:03:04] Speaker B: She was one of the Emilys.
[00:03:06] Speaker C: One of the what?
Cold, cold, cold, cold. Am I having a hallucination?
[00:03:32] Speaker A: Hi, Emily.
[00:03:34] Speaker C: You also know her. We were at Runway at the same time. Miranda.
[00:03:38] Speaker A: Really?
[00:03:39] Speaker C: How was I?
Where would you like to start? I am the new Patriots editor at Runway.
[00:03:56] Speaker A: No, you are not. Yeah.
[00:03:57] Speaker C: We are all so thrilled. You know what's funny is you've changed. You have. You're much more confident.
Kept those eyebrows, though, didn't you?
[00:04:11] Speaker A: So that kind of gives you just a little bit of an insight without giving too much away.
In this, we see Andy has.
And you know me. No spoilers ever. But Andy finally succeeded in her dream job, only to have her entire life come crashing down around her.
She marry her boyfriend. You're gonna have to wait and see. What direction did her life go? Does she have a family? Again, I'm not gonna give any of that away. And the same goes for Emily. What happened with her life and how things progressed.
And there's going to be a face that we have not seen in Hollywood and a good hot minute that has kind of a major role in this movie. Now, we've seen some of the main characters in other films, and I will be completely honest. When I sat down and watched the first Devil Wears Prada before I did the other review, I honestly would not have even recognized that that was Emily Blunt. And so I was just. I was just. That blew me away. I was like, wow, she has come so far in 20 years. But obviously here she's very recognizable. And Ann Hathaway, like I said, we see her literally in her dream role, but then we see how things shift, and she ends up back at Runway. How does that happen?
Again, a major spoiler. So I am not going down that path. But what we see here is that everybody with Runway ends up going to Italy and into Milan for this big fashion show.
And how it's going to tie in and how it's going to lead to the future of Runway.
And that really plays a key moment because a very important character for the first movie actually dies. And that's what kind of leads to this precipice. But who is it? Again, no spoilers. So you're gonna have to find that one out for yourself.
I will say this goes a step beyond just the typical chick flick, fashion icon movie. There is actual heart to this movie, and it really surprised me. And there was literally genuine moments that I Found myself just smiling and even chuckling at. There's no like ha ha, ha, ha ha, laugh out loud moments. But there are some definite moments that are just gonna leave you just better than you were before now with saying that. There are so few sad moments mixed in with this too. And there are some jabs. There's.
I will say this is not full on woke. There's a few jabs that they. They insert that unless you're paying attention, you'd easily miss them. Nothing like overly direct. It. They didn't make it a point of being just all of this different type for friendly. I mean, there's. There's, there's a few things with pronouns. There's a few things with some other stuff that's happening, but it's side pieces. It's just casual comments here and there. It's nothing part of the main storyline.
But where does this leave them? Where does this leave Miranda? Where does this leave Andy? Where does this leave Emily? And how does this all come together?
Well, there is a twist that happens that even I did not anticipate. A lot of times if you're paying attention to the details, you can kind of see where it's going. And in high hindsight after the movie was done, I'm like, you know, maybe that could have been hinting to that, but it not. It's like more indirect than direct.
And I will say I was very pleasantly surprised when the movie was all said and done that I was just sitting there like that was better than I thought.
And I'm thinking this in my head and just some random people just kind of came up to me, asked me what I thought of the movie. Usually I do that to them. Usually I'll just ask random people.
And I was just. I was surprised. A lot of times sequels, especially ones that wait this long to have a sequel, they try too hard or they fizzle out or they just don't have the oomph.
Well, this one, it tries a little hard, maybe, maybe a little bit too much.
But at the same time it rewards you for your patience. It rewards you for the weight. It rewards you for basically being what it is. Now, I will say if you love fashion, if you love the Cosmo and Red Red book, I think that's it tells you how far out of sync I am with modern magazines. But basically, if you love fashion, you will love this movie.
If you love how the Hollywood drama and the Hollywood elite, you will love this movie. I mean, this kind of is a loose play on the whole Met Gala Thing that was recently of, like, art is fashion. Fashion is art type thing. Because I swear, some of these beauty shows that they have in Milan, I mean, like I said, I was a little bit a part of this life many years ago, and I. This is something I thought even back then, but this show. I mean, movies like this just almost push that envelope even further of. I think these designers try to create the most absurd, ridiculous things that are not even fashion. It's like, once in a while, they'll have a piece that's like, okay, that. That could maybe be fashion. Or once in a blue moon, you see, oh, wow, that's beautiful.
But a lot of these things are like, what was the point of this? What was the statement is this is not even clothing, just with some of the absurdities that you see. And we see that here, too. It's like, I don't know if they're honoring it, if they're making fun of it, maybe a little bit of both.
But it's. It's an adventure for sure, but only if you are into this lifestyle.
Now, the part that I was talking about that a surprise, is this one did something that very few sequels do.
The Devil wears Prada 2 actually was a little bit better than the first one.
Now, I'm going to give you a second to process that for a second. Yeah, it really. It really was. Even the story was better.
There's a few flaws in it, definitely, but it was just like I was taken aback, genuinely taken aback by what I saw here. And I'm just, like, just almost awestruck at times. And with saying that, I am giving the Devil wears Prada 2A 6.5 out of 10 on the Deputy scale. Now, if you remember, I did give the first one, Devil Wars Prada, a 6.25. So we went up a quarter of a point. Now, that may not seem like much, but it's difficult for a movie to go from here to here. Usually, movies go from here down, down, down, down, occasionally come back up a little bit, but it's usually a really slippery slope. I mean, just take a look at the Star wars movies. That alone will fill you in on a lot. Right there, where it's like, up. You're on a roller coaster, basically.
So is this the last that we are going to see of everybody at Runway magazine? Is this the end of Runway magazine? I guess you're gonna have to wait and see, because I'm not spoiling any of that for you. You know me. No spoilers ever.
But I hope you've enjoyed this adventure. If this is one that you've been wanting to see for a while, I definitely if you liked the first one you're gonna love this one. If you are not into this world, if you are not captivated by fashion, if you are not captivated by the Hollywood, just the wow factor of it, both good and bad, this is probably not going to be a movie that you enjoy. But if you are into this type of lifestyle, if you are just captivated by fashion and the industry and the beauty and the glamour and all that, there's going to be a lot here to love.
