[00:00:00] Speaker A: Hello, my friends, and welcome back to Movie Deputy Reviews, where we are talking about a very unexpected film today. If you have caught some previews or something lately, or if you've maybe seen some commercials, we are talking about the new Sheep Detectives movie, the new one with Hugh Jackman. Now, I will forever see him as both Wolverine and the Greatest Showman. So I will see him as P.T. barnum. And is there just certain roles that he has become absolutely iconic in? And after this, I'm also going to remember him as George. Now, why is that? Well, that is because this one is a little unexpected in what it is. Now, with that being said, there are a few topics here that may be a little intense for the youngest of viewers. And so I am giving the Sheep Detectives an innocent rating. But I'm also going to say 8 and above, because I don't. I think there's just some tones and some topics here that might be a little hard for the youngest audiences to process. Unless, of course, if you're watching it with them and they have questions to kind of help them with that. Now, this movie, you will laugh, you will cry, it will rip your heart out, and it will make you laugh. It's going to be the gamut of emotions. And. And I avoid other critics and stuff. I avoid other people's opinions and stuff of this one. But I had just overheard something on the radio and somebody compared this to Knives out meets Babe Pig in the City type thing and. Or Babe, Baby. Babe, the pig movie is what they were referring to. And so it's like, okay, I'm thinking, okay, how are you going to combine Knives out and Babe? Well, I. There's definitely some references to both of those movies. Not directly, but more indirect references to that here. And what we see. Does that mean that's an accurate description? Well, let's go into the trailer and then we will get into this a little bit further because there is a lot here, a lot here to unpack. [00:02:20] Speaker B: Sorry, here. [00:02:20] Speaker A: I'm just trying to get my. There it goes. [00:02:22] Speaker C: If there's one secret to happiness in my life, it's taking care of the kindest creatures on earth. Sheep, I want you to meet my flock When I wake up well, I know I'm gonna be keeping them well fed, well groove. And each day I read out loud to them. Mysteries, whodunits. I know who the killer was. I like to pretend that follow along but they're only sheep. Oh, why would he stop there? He was just about to say who the killer was. [00:02:59] Speaker A: This is torture. It was the maid. [00:03:01] Speaker C: Right when I wake up, [00:03:04] Speaker B: wake up, everybody wake up. [00:03:08] Speaker A: Now, in this part of the movie, it. I know I paused it there at a weird moment. If you're over on our YouTube channel, there is a really important thing here to explain thunderstorms to young kids, especially if you have. If you're of a child that is afraid of thunderstorms. And this is something you've been wanting to see. This has a very cute explanation for what thunderstorms are. And it. I think it's going to put a lot of minds at ease. I, for one, am a pluvia file. I absolutely love thunderstorms. So. And when my son was younger, I actually taught him that it was basically God bowling. And so that's what he. That's what he heard was the pins falling down. And so that was just an easy reference for him. But that's not the one that they use here in the movie. [00:03:56] Speaker B: We found George on the grass and he's not moving. What did he tell us what to do. Our shepherd was murdered and we shall solve the crime. George was visited by someone he knew well enough to offer a drink. [00:04:17] Speaker C: Not much of a story for you, [00:04:18] Speaker A: I'm afraid, unless there's anything out of the ordinary. [00:04:21] Speaker B: The policeman is completely hopeless. We need to help him. [00:04:25] Speaker C: You think you're brave enough to leave home? We're not scared. [00:04:29] Speaker B: What is that? [00:04:30] Speaker C: I think it's a road. [00:04:31] Speaker B: What is it made of? [00:04:32] Speaker C: Well, not grass can tell you that. [00:04:34] Speaker B: Are you coming for George? For George? Officer Derrick, I am George Hardy's lawyer. [00:04:44] Speaker A: He wrote a will. [00:04:45] Speaker B: In the nighttime stories, the people in the will are always the suspects. [00:04:49] Speaker C: That man had nothing. [00:04:50] Speaker B: Well, actually, there is $30 million. And we have our motive. We need to look for clues. [00:04:59] Speaker C: Stand back. I am, after all, a sheep detective. Who killed George? What are they hiding? [00:05:08] Speaker B: What if I can't solve it? [00:05:10] Speaker C: I've read you dozens of these stories. They follow very simple rules. Look, a clue. Every time something happens with this case, that's what I have. There they are. A clue. Thank you all. [00:05:26] Speaker B: She can do things. [00:05:28] Speaker A: In fact, we can do anything. [00:05:31] Speaker C: I want a Bassett. I want a Basset. Oh, yeah, [00:05:40] Speaker A: what's with them? [00:05:44] Speaker C: Guys, I may be inside a clue. Help. [00:05:50] Speaker A: And that really captures the heart of this movie. As you see, George, I mean, tell from the trailer. So no spoilers here. Like I said, it's part of the trailer. Something happens to George, and though the police are looking into it, there's clues that are leading in so many different directions. And when there's $30 million on the line. Those. Those directions are going to lead even further, and it's going to be like a tree trunk where it starts here and it goes here and then it goes like that. So it's just gonna get crazy. And so everybody, it seems to be chasing their tail. That is, except for the sheep. Now, George has spent many evenings over years reading detective stories and whodunits to these sheep. And so they have a good place to start from. And it truly is just. It's very interesting watching how this plays out and watching different personalities come through with the sheep. You have the literal black sheep. You have the. The more independent ones. You have the ones that are afraid of change. It's like. It's very representative of society. And I was very surprised and very pleased to say that it is not woke at all. Now, there are. There is one particular scene that just breaks your heart. Now, if you are sensitive to something happening to animals, this isn't the it. I'm trying to think how to word it without spoiling it. Something happens to one of the sheep, and in the way that it happens, it is. It's very hard to watch, and it's very emotional and it's. I won't spoil by saying who it was or how it happened, because I can't really even say the how because that would be a pretty big spoiler for part of the story. So I had to. I've got to dance around that one a little bit. I was, like, going and having to stop myself because, like, I always promised no spoilers ever. So I won't do that. But there are so many other moments in this. And then there's that. The proverbial black sheep. And the mistreatment of that black sheep for reasons completely out of its own control is another thing that is very difficult to watch at times and very emotional, especially if you've ever been somebody who's dealt with bullying or discrimination or anything like that. Like I said, the movie's not woke at all, but definitely tugs at the heartstrings. And when the. When everything that happens, when it. When it's finally solved, the happy ending that you might expect might just surprise you. Because though the ending does leave you with a smile on your face and a warmth in your heart, it's not the ending that you expect. I was very pleasantly surprised to see how they wrapped up this story and just. It was just something special. And we don't see enough of that a lot in today's movies, especially without any of the woke stuff built into it. And so it's just, I'm just kind of standing here looking at the poster. I want to share the podcast image with you. So here's the poster. Here's the podcast image. I want you to notice. One thing I did is I'm going to kind of bring up the poster again briefly. Now you notice where the little sheep is in the bottom of the image. That's one of the big things I changed. I kind of shaped it up because the movie is called the Sheep Detectives and their tagline is like a new breed of mystery. And I just kind of positioned that little guy into where it says a new mystery. And how that little guy fits into this whole thing is a very special part of this story. So I highly encourage you to check this out if this is one that you've been wanting to see in the theaters or one that you've been looking forward to. Like I said, if you are an animal lover, there is so much to like about this. There is that one scene that is just. It's gonna rip your heart out and run it through the food processor before it gives it back. But it does give it back to you and it does more than make up for that. And it just leaves you with one of those feelings right here. And you may be wondering, score wise, while I'm at. Well, there's a couple scenes that are easily, easily mid eight. There's. There's other scenes that are probably close to the fours. Not a lot of those. There's a lot more. That's the better topic on this. And judging this as a whole as the, as a film in and of itself, I'm like, I've really been debating on the score on this one as a dancing round. And I went back and I was looking at the deputy scale, which of course you can find at the end of all of my videos here, but the deputy scale. And staying purely true to that, with everything that's portrayed here and all of the story and all of the animals and everything else, the Sheep Detectives is getting a 6.75 out of 10 on the deputy scale. I was really debating seven low sevens, but there's, there's just a couple scenes that are just a little outside of the questionable content thing. Like I said, maybe stuff's a little bit too intense for some viewers. And just what I, what I felt as a critic, not personally, but like as movie deputy, watching this of maybe a few plot holes that I'm wondering, okay, is it going to lead into more of the story? Are we going to be seeing these detectives solving further crimes in the future? Is that why we're left with some of the plot holes that we have here? Or is there going to be something else that we don't expect? I don't know any more than you do at this point, so I hope that you have enjoyed this. I know I did. Feel free to let me know.
