[00:00:00] Speaker A: Hello, my friends, and welcome back to Movie Deputy Reviews. You probably think I fell off the face of the earth because I didn't quite get everything done that I was hoping to. I just got back from vacation. I was out of the country, and now I'm back.
And so I had a lot of different experiences. My husband and I went on a lot of different adventures, and I am back. My goal was originally to record in advance a bunch of the old Star wars movies and have those up for when I was gone. But I did not manage my time. The great. No excuses. And so that was that. I just got home night before last, and I'm still just trying to play catch up, trying to play jet lag a little bit. So I apologize that this phone I'm coming back on is an evening review.
But of course, I wanted to bring this to you. You probably, of course, know the new ones in the theaters.
I have done something really weird. I have not seen a movie in, like, 10 days.
Yeah, seriously, it was so bad.
And so I just. Oh, okay. I can't complete. I haven't seen a movie in the theater in, like, 10 days. I did actually just watch this on Disney plus last night, and I was like, wait a minute. The Devil Wears Prada is now a Disney movie. So does that make Miranda the Disney villain? And question does which one of the girls. Is it Andy, or is it.
I can't think of her name. The one that played by Emily Blunt. Which one of those are the. Are they the Disney princesses? Are they Anastasia and Drusilla? Or was one of them Cinderella?
Guess we're just gonna have to wait and find out. I'm asking so many questions because I'm gonna openly admit to you I have never seen this movie before you last night.
I've seen bits and pieces of it on tv, bits and pieces of it at Francis House. I mean, I got the gist of the movie, but I didn't sit down and review it and take my notes and. Or anything like that until last night.
Yes, I know how bad that is, how bad that sounds, but admittedly, I was just as like.
It's.
I really dragged my feet because I know this industry. I was in this industry many years ago and just not to this level, but just where it was intense. And I want to say, before I get too far into this, I am giving the Devil Wears Prada a guilty rating. I'm going to explain that a little bit more as we go on, but first of all, I want to jump into the trailer with You. So if you have not seen this in a long time, or if you've never seen this, let's jump into the trailer and I will stop it where it's fitting. So lets go.
[00:02:58] Speaker B: Miranda Priest is the editor in chief of Runway.
[00:03:01] Speaker C: So you don't read Runway?
[00:03:02] Speaker A: No.
[00:03:03] Speaker B: Not to mention a legend.
[00:03:04] Speaker C: And before today, you'd never heard of me?
[00:03:07] Speaker A: No.
[00:03:07] Speaker B: You work a year for her, and you can get a job at any magazine you want.
[00:03:10] Speaker C: You had no style or sense of fashion?
[00:03:13] Speaker A: I I don't know.
[00:03:15] Speaker C: That wasn't a question.
[00:03:17] Speaker D: You got a job at a fashion magazine.
[00:03:19] Speaker C: What was it, a phone interview?
[00:03:20] Speaker D: Who is that sad little.
Are we doing a before and after piece I don't know about?
[00:03:26] Speaker B: I just have to stick it out for one year.
[00:03:29] Speaker A: This story almost makes you feel like you're watching Princess Diaries. Because you're seeing the rags to riches type transformation of Anne Hathaway in this. And it's just, it's. And when I When I see Meryl Streep, I know a lot of people immediately jump to the whole, like, Mamma Mia Thing. I think of the 101 Dalmatians, and then I think of that Ricky. And the one where she's a singer with her daughter. And that. That's. Those are the ones that really kind of come to mind for me first. When it comes to Meryl Streep movies. But, yeah, this one, I It's not one of the first ones that comes to mind. And I had to wonder as I was watching this. It's like, is the Runway magazine in the movie. Is that supposed to be Vogue? Is it supposed to be Cosmo? I mean, which one is this supposed to be fulfilling? I mean, Runway is not actually a real magazine. So what is this representing? Obviously, it's starting to represent something. But then I can do what I
[00:04:27] Speaker B: came to New York to do. Be a journalist. But I can't let Miranda get to me.
[00:04:30] Speaker C: I need 10 or 15 skirts.
[00:04:31] Speaker B: What kind of skirts?
[00:04:32] Speaker C: Please bore someone else with your questions.
[00:04:35] Speaker B: Never ask Miranda anything. You run errands.
[00:04:38] Speaker C: Hello. Where are my eggs?
Lingerie Boogie boards.
[00:04:46] Speaker B: Million girls would kill for this job. Goodbye. Goodbye.
[00:04:49] Speaker C: I thought, take a chance.
Hire the smart fat girl.
[00:04:53] Speaker B: She hates me. Nigel, there's a way that you can help me.
[00:04:57] Speaker A: No.
[00:04:57] Speaker B: Please. I'm desperate.
[00:04:59] Speaker D: I know, it's tragic.
[00:05:02] Speaker B: Will that fit me?
[00:05:03] Speaker D: Little Crisco and some fishing line, and we're in business.
[00:05:09] Speaker B: I'm still the same person. Better clothes.
[00:05:12] Speaker D: I like the old clothes.
[00:05:14] Speaker B: Andy, you look so chic. You look so thin. Do I. I'm just one stomach flew away from my goal. We.
Happy birthday. I'm so sorry.
My personal life is hanging by a thread.
[00:05:26] Speaker D: That's what happens when you start doing well at work. Let me know when your whole life goes up in smoke. At least it's time for a promotion.
[00:05:32] Speaker C: You know why I hired you. I see a great deal of myself in you.
People think that success just happens to you. It doesn't want this life.
The decision's yours.
I need to get home tonight.
[00:05:47] Speaker B: No one is flying out because of the weather.
[00:05:49] Speaker A: Please. It's just.
[00:05:50] Speaker C: I don't know, Drizz.
[00:05:56] Speaker A: This is like the ultimate diva movie. It is. You have to be thin enough, you have to be hot enough, you have to be pretty enough.
And if you don't measure up, you're not good enough.
And that is one of the reasons I'm giving this a guilty rating. There's no, like, inappropriate nudity there. There's some lingerie scenes, but nothing that is too risque and stuff like that. But it is the tone and the topic of the movie of why this is getting a guilty rating of I'm not skinny enough. I'm not this. I'm not good enough. I'm not smart enough.
Andy is a journalist and she goes to New York because she wants to work for a magazine. And she's tried going to all of the normal ones and they're like, yeah, you're a small town girl. Go away.
So she goes to Runway and they decided to take a chance and hire the smart fat girl. Mind you, she's a size 6.
For people that don't understand what that means, that typically means you have a 26 inch waist. Now picture that.
That is not fat in the. In any stretch of the imagination. But in the modeling world, if you are not basically a size 0, you're not good enough. And though this one has some meaningfulness, some mean, there. There's some actual meaningful things that happen in this movie.
It is disguised, it is shielded.
[00:07:28] Speaker C: It is
[00:07:31] Speaker A: separated from all of everything else in this movie. And you're so distracted by the fashion and the beauty and everything that's going on because it's captivating. It's like, okay, when we watch TV or when we're scrolling through on social media and we see some of the topics of the articles and best dress this, worst dress that.
If, even if you don't want to pay attention, it's right there. And eventually it kind of gets you enough of your attention. Like, and it makes fun of the most Absurd dresses that this year's Met Gala or this or that, and you're like, just your curiosity in your brain gets going.
And this really addresses a lot of the weird drama with fashion and things like that and, like, what works and what doesn't and how fashion really sets the tone of a lot of industries out there for entertainment, for other things.
And it is.
It's captivating and it's frustrating and it's infuriating, and at times, it's boring.
I mean, do I look the part? Do I look like I'm. I mean, I'm not gonna spend two hours on my hair and makeup every day before I'm sitting down here in front of the microphone talking to you about movies.
Do I fit the Hollywood mold? Absolutely not. But I'm really good at pissing Hollywood off, so that usually tells me I'm doing something right.
So if this is one that you have been wanting to see for a long time, then I would definitely recommend it. If you're curious about the new one, if you are not into fashion, if you are not into that industry, if you are not into this type of story, I honestly wouldn't recommend it. But at the same time, staying true to the deputy scale, this is one of those things where my personal opinion and the deputy opinion are. They're a bit different.
I did give the Devil wears Prada a 6.25 out of 10 on the Deputy scale. That may surprise a few of you. For me, personally, I would probably put it in the mid fours to upper fives.
I mean, it was just like.
It just. It so reinforces all of these negative stereotypes for women that you have to be this and you have to be that, and you have to do this and you have to do that, and if you don't fit all these categories, you're not good enough.
And I don't subscribe to that because I think what's in here and what's in here matters.
Obviously, we're going to go to what look we're going to. Our eyes are automatically going to go to certain things that we. We like. There's certain things that each of us like, and our eyes are going to go towards that.
But what's in here and what's in here really matter. And if you're on our podcast where you're not watching the video over here on our YouTube channel, I am pointing at the heart and the head, and so that I think that really matters for something. And at the end of the day, there's a point of that in this movie. But you have to get through all the fluff to get to there.
So is it worth it? I don't know. If you are into fashion, if you are in, if you are captivated, captivated by Hollywood and all of this stuff, I highly recommend this to you then. But if you are not, if you are an average Joe, average Jane, however you want to look at that and you are not captivated by this, then you're probably not going to be.
This may end up a four for you on something like that, where it's watchable but forgettable or some people. It's not even that, but I hope that this will help either way. I know there are some people that this is their all time favorite movie and I can kind of see that after watching it. But at the same time I can see a lot of people just going meh with it in that category. So as always, this has been an adventure. I will have the new one up for you soon along with some other movies that I am kind of behind the bar. That's what I get for traveling.
And again, my apologies for not getting everything pre recorded ahead of time but I will be back again soon. And of course you have the movie deputy back. And by the way, this is going to be not, not me. But I mean this behind me is going to be changing soon. You're going to want to keep an eye out for that. If you're curious what I'm talking about, check. Come on over here and check out our YouTube channel. So as always, I will be back soon. It's an adventure and I always have fun with you guys. So till later guys. Bye.
