[00:00:00] Hello once again, and welcome back to another episode of movie Deputy Reviews, where I am bringing you the most in depth interrogations of movies for their plot and their content.
[00:00:13] Now, why do I make it a point of saying it quite like that? Well, now, first of all, that's my tagline. Second of all, the movie that we're going to be talking about today is one that you'll definitely be able to tell that I'm not like most movie critics, because the fact of the matter, I look at the plot and the content more so than the actors and the videography and how well this is done, how well that's done, best actor and blah, blah, blah. I know that's important to some people. And if you are one of those people, fine, that's great. But that's not what I'm here for. I am here to really look deep into the plot and content of a movie and bring you the base review just based off of that. So I don't worry about a lot of the Hollywood gobbledygook. I don't focus on a lot of that stuff. And by doing so, I'm really good at upsetting Hollywood, as you can imagine. So. But I'm not doing this for them. I am doing this for you and of course for myself. But I'm hoping that I can save people from nightmarish movies, and I'm hoping that I can help redirect people to ones that are just inspire people.
[00:01:30] Today, unfortunately, I'm trying to think how to word this. I am going to be bringing to you a movie that is certainly going to be on my ten worst list for the year. Now, when I tell you the title of this movie, I'm gonna make you wait actually a little bit for the score. But when I tell you the title of this movie, it actually may surprise you. Because if you pay any attention at all to social media or to the national media, this movie has been getting, quote unquote, rave reviews because of its all star cast. I mean, it has an incredible cast and it's actually told well. The story itself is actually told well. Forgive the, if you guys hear the little music thing in the background, it's my clock in the other room.
[00:02:20] But so it's told well and it's cast really well.
[00:02:26] But again, I don't look at movies just based off of that. I have to look at the plot and the content of this movie.
[00:02:35] And to say that this movie is progressive, to say that this movie is aimed at you in a way where it is intent on shoving an idea down your throat without you even realizing it. This movie has a very, very particular audience that it is aimed at. And unfortunately, you have to basically sit through the whole thing to realize what that audience is. And that's why I am here to help.
[00:03:13] The movie that we are going to be talking about today is conclave.
[00:03:17] Now, as a lot of you know, I consider myself both a christian and an agnostic. I know that's kind of a bit of a thing of, it's a bit of a contradiction of sorts, but I can firmly and very passionately say that conclave is going to disrupt and upset. I mean, if you are devout in your belief system at any level, this movie is going to upset you. There is just no other way to put it. Because if you don't know what a conclave is, a conclave happens when the pope dies, when the current pope dies, and then it has becomes the things of, like all of the, a certain level of Catholic is basically elders. They have to go and go to Vatican City and then they all sequester themselves and they vote for a new pope. And they keep voting over and over and over again over a series of days, making the arguments for who they want to vote for, who they don't want to vote for, until it's a two thirds majority. And that's how a new pope is chosen. And then at that time, the pope chooses the name that they, what they wish to go by, etcetera. And then there's a new pope. And every time the vote is done and they don't come to a consensus or don't come to a two thirds majority vote, they put the white smoke up. And then when a pope is finally chosen, I believe it's the red smoke that goes up. Forgive me if I am backwards on that. It didn't actually show that part in the movie, just showed the smoke when the pope was not being chosen. So, but overall, this movie doesn't sound too, so bad. Right? Just in general, just because it's the story. And like I said, it really is an all star cast. And so that is going to bring in a lot of people just based on who is in this. Now, like I said, I don't focus on that, but I can see how people could get caught up in this.
[00:05:27] But though, one of the big things in this movie is it shows a very deep level of corruption within, within this group of individuals that are eligible to become the pope. And one, one person does not want it. And there are other people that want it more than they realize, and then as they start to expose these corruptions within themselves, they have to, like, step down as the possibilities, because the pope has to represent everybody and so they can't have things that lean one way or the other. And there's an argument that's made is throughout this movie, and there's even the quote, if I can't win, who do I convince my supporters to vote for? Well, how does that sound familiar? I mean, think back to a debate not that long ago. This movie, the timing of the release of this movie was so deliberate. Being this close to the presidential election, and being that this movie is, there are very strong leanings politically in both directions. Jabs taken directly at the candidates. I mean, of course they're not mentioning names because this is all just taking place with this movie. And of course it's based on a book by Robert Harris. And if you're brand new to movie deputy reviews, I never read the books. I only watch the movies. So that's all I can base this off of. But a movie that is released 13 days, or I guess tomorrow will be twelve, or today is twelve days prior to the presidential election. And to have so many things in this that coincide so perfectly with what's going on with our presidential choices right now is just, there's, it's not a coincidence. There's no way it's a coincidence. It's a coincidence if you have like, one or two things. It's not a coincidence when it's the entire story.
[00:07:23] And when a new pope is eventually chosen as this movie carries on and goes forward, this.
[00:07:34] Okay, I, you know me, I won't spoil this. I won't. I will not spoil this for you and tell you which one of them gets chosen.
[00:07:40] I will say that when the credits started rolling on this movie, a couple of people that were leaving the theater, because I saw this in the theater just like everybody else, there was a one lady and her husband. She walked right by me and she goes, I'm gonna be sick.
[00:07:59] And I just followed her just over to the hallway where I could still kinda see, make sure there's no bonus scenes or anything, which there's not. But I wanted to talk to her a little bit. And she said that she has been a devout catholic her entire life. And this was so blasphemous.
[00:08:17] She did not know how to even process the information that had just happened because she was literally so sick. And that a bunch of those are probably five or six other people, also a small bunch. That's not a large bunch of people. But there were a bunch of other people. Like I said, five or six people that kind of joined into this conversation. There was only one person out of this group that was like, oh, but this is progressive. This is what our world is becoming. This is what the world is coming to. It just needs to be accept.
[00:08:48] No, just, just know there.
[00:08:54] Like I said, it's such an all star cast. It's done well, so I can't criticize. I mean, it's. The acting is superb. The how. It's like you are pulled into the story as the story is being told, as much as it is upsetting to watch, it's like you can't stop watching it. At the same time, I look at movies for their plot and their content.
[00:09:25] And as you heard me say early on in this review, that this movie is like, is going to be on my worst movies of the year. And why is that? It's because I'm only giving conclave a 2.5 out of ten on the deputy scale.
[00:09:41] And that is painful, confusing.
[00:09:46] Not that the movie itself is confusing. The ending is confusing of why they went this direction, the story itself, just because it's just in your face over and over and over again. Now, mind you, it argues for both sides. No matter. I keep bringing up the fact that it's arguing this stuff for this presidential election, but at the same, it does argue for both sides, but it also points out very certain things that try to turn you against one side and lean towards the other. And being that this is a Hollywood film, I will let you discern which direction that is leaning in.
[00:10:28] I won't. Like I said, I won't spoil that for you. And I'm not going to spoil it by telling you the ending. But I will say, if you are devout in your faith, this movie, the ending of this movie, will leave you just reeling.
[00:10:47] Just absolutely reeling.
[00:10:51] I was just left aghast when that was revealed in this movie, and I'm just.
[00:11:00] I was just literally in pure shock. And so, if you have seen this already, I would love to know what your thoughts on this are. If you haven't seen this yet, I would love to know what your thoughts are.
[00:11:16] Like I said, I won't spoil this. But I will say, just. Just go prepared. Go prepared. If you've read the book and you know what to expect, great. You're probably gonna love this. But like I said, I never read the books. I only see the movies.
[00:11:31] So if this review has helped you at all, which I sincerely hope it has, you know which buttons to push to always get the latest and greatest movie deputy content.
[00:11:41] And I hope that this helps at least somebody out there. There's, like I said, there's just some lines that you don't cross and in the literal sense of the word.
[00:11:53] But as always, I will be back soon, and I'll talk to you later. Bye.
