[00:00:00] Hello again, everybody, and welcome back to movie deputy podcasts, where I bring you a little bit of everything along with the movie reviews. As I am a cat mom, I have been fighting a virus for two months ish that knocked me out and took me away from my episodes for quite some time. Took me away from you for quite some time. I did not have any voice even to work with. That was, well, the one episode. There's a couple of episodes I did do. You kind of got a grasp. But imagine that was already considerably better than where I had been. And of course, trying to entertain all of my kitty cats and everything so they do not destroy my office. Not that they would intentionally destroy, but when they get bored, they get destructive is a good way to put it. One of them, especially anybody who knows me well, knows which one I'm referring to. And yeah, he's a handful. But I guess all of them are in their own ways. I've got some that are super needy kitties that just need lots of lovings all the time. And some of them that are just as like, I'm daddy's kitty, leave me alone. And I've got are the ones that are like, I'm mommy's kitty, leave me alone when daddy's home.
[00:01:19] And yes, I know it drives some people nuts that as pet parents, you say mommy and daddy. And you know what? We are actual parents, too. Our son is going to be 30 this year. That means that he was 20 when I started movie deputy, as movie deputy will be turning ten years old one day before our son turns 30.
[00:01:40] So I'll probably mention more of that as we get closer. And the movie that we're going to be talking about tonight, definitely before I even tell you anything about it, including the title, I'm going to say that this one got a guilty rating. Now, I'm not saying just a guilty rating. This one is guilty almost on the edge of like, where 50 Shades of Gray was.
[00:02:09] Now, obviously, this is not a 50 Shades of Gray movie. And there is a lot of topic in this movie that talks about Henry Miller. If you are a fan of Henry Miller, he is a novelist, and his novels are known for being very sexual. They're being very graphically sexual in how they're portrayed and how they're worded.
[00:02:32] It draws you in and it makes you part of this story.
[00:02:36] And I have to say that I not only was appreciative as equally as I was appalled with this movie just because of just the way that it's presented, the way that it's done. It's absolutely beautiful.
[00:02:54] But at the same time, the subject matter is so far beyond inappropriate.
[00:03:00] It's like the moment I walked out of this movie, I called my sister and I know she's listening, so she's going to know who I'm talking about here. But she's like, well, what did you think of it? And I'm like, well, on one side of the coin, I want to give it like a seven and a half because it was really done well.
[00:03:17] But staying true to the deputy scale and everything that I represent with movie deputy and bringing you the movies that I do, I want to give this a three.
[00:03:28] No, those two are not anything close to one another.
[00:03:35] If you absolutely must see it, wait for it to come out on dvd or Blu ray or digital. A seven is great story, significant flaws, memorable.
[00:03:45] And I will say this one definitely is memorable. But where does that leave me with a movie like this, with a score on what to give a movie such as this?
[00:03:57] And I'm probably going to offend people and I may lose listeners. I may gain listeners. I'm not sure on this with where I ended up with the score. And I know I'm going to have a lot of people disagreeing with me with where I ended up on the score on this. But I'm trying to describe this movie enough that if that is not a movie that you are into, then this is not going to be a story for you.
[00:04:23] If you're a fan of Henry Miller, you might really enjoy this. If you're a fan of the deeply sexualized type of stories, such as the way that he writes, you'll appreciate the nuance that this is done in because there's no graphic scenes in this movie. It's all verbal, it's all prose. It's all just how it's presented in the fashion. It's hinted to with things with motion, it's hinted to with certain actions, but it never actually shows what it's referring to. And in doing so, like I said, it's almost like you're watching something unfold.
[00:05:14] It's like you're trying to grab that forbidden fruit.
[00:05:18] It's like you're drawn in to see where the story is going, but at the same time, you're appalled at the way it's being done. Now, why do I keep using that word? Well, it's because with the movie, and you probably notice I haven't mentioned the title yet. And that's what I'm getting ready to mention here, the movie is titled Miller's Girl.
[00:05:36] Now, there's a reason that they used girl in the title. The story is about a literature teacher and his high school. He's teaching high school literature, and his student is this exceptionally brilliant young lady who is absolutely obsessed with books. She loves reading. She loves things that dare her brain to experience things that it's never experienced before. And so she is absolutely captivated by Henry Miller.
[00:06:08] One of the things that she has to do for a big grade in her class is she has to write a story, like in the inspiration of, or in the style of her favorite author. Well, her favorite author is Henry Miller. And so the whole teacher student relationship type thing, I can't really describe what happens there again because that would be a spoiler, but just let your imagination run with that one. But that's why I keep using the appalled is the fact that it's this much older man and this very vulnerable, I want to say child, but that's not quite right. She's a teenager. But it's that whole thing of forbidden fruit and how that's presented. So that's why this has such a guilty rating. And the way that she does this, it's like it ends up putting his entire life in jeopardy, both personally and professionally. And just like I said, the way it's presented, it's incredible and it's insane.
[00:07:16] It's auto erotica on an entirely different level.
[00:07:21] So is this going to be for everybody? No, absolutely not.
[00:07:25] And I keep saying that I'm going to tell you what my score is, because like I said, I'm either going to gain or lose people when they realize the score that I gave this movie. But like I said, I was so torn between, like, mid upper sevens and low threes just because the direction that this movie was going in, in no way was it ever horrible, unwatchable, anything like that, the really low end of the deputy scale. But it was just stories like this just really challenge the ideas of Hollywood. But at the same time, with seeing everything that's gone on in Hollywood at the last couple of years without everything, with Epstein and everything else, there is just something appalling about a story such as this. So ultimately, the score that I'm giving this is a 6.5 out of ten on the deputy scale. Because as much as the subject matter is appalling as to what it does, the way that it's done, being a critic that talks to you like a normal, everyday person, it's like, I'm not a critic. I'm not going to sit there and focus on all of the cinematography aspects and all the way that it was filmed and the way it was acted. No, I don't care about that. I care about the story, who it's aimed at, who it's actually reaching, things like that. And this story, as it's an independent title, will never get the fanfare and will never get the hoopla that a bigger title would get. And in this case, that might be a good thing. But like I said, the way that it's presented and the way that it's done, you are glued to it to figure out how it plays out. You just want to see how this plays out. You want to get drawn into it.
[00:09:09] And whether that makes you aroused and want to go home to your special someone. Or whether that makes you run to the bathroom and puke your guts out. It's one of those ones that's going to elicit one of those reactions. Which one will it be from you. I guess that's for you to decide. But I hope this at least helps you in that matter. I will be back Friday to talk to you about another movie. And can't wait till you come back. And can't wait till I come back. And I'll talk to you soon. Bye.
