[00:00:01] Speaker A: Hello, everybody, and welcome back to Movie Deputy Reviews. If you can tell by the title and of course, the poster over here on my side, we are going back in time.
Now, I may look a little disheveled. Forgive me. Still kind of in the whole recovery process. And I'm going to try to do. Trying to get back in the swing of things.
This show is going to be up Monday, and so happy Monday. Now, Mondays are kind of boredom, doldrum, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
But hopefully this will make your day better. At least I hope so.
So we are going to jump right in with Practical Magic. Now, this movie, since it's. Since it came out in 1998, has been very polarizing. People either love it or they hate it.
And I've. I've known people that have both loved it and hated it. And I've honestly never watched it until last night.
Seriously, I had never watched this until last night. And so I sat down and I took my notes. And I actually did pretty good taking my notes. I'm just looking down to my phone. I got, like, quite a bit, a lot more than I've gotten for a while.
And so I.
I don't know what I was expecting for this movie, but with the new one coming out, I obviously had to watch this one first because I don't like watching the sequel until I watch the original and of course, review the original.
And like I said, I had no idea what to expect. I knew it was something about witches and, of course, magic. And I obviously knew the two main characters in this.
You've got Sally and then you've got Jillian. And it's just because I literally knew nothing about them. I don't read other people's reviews. I don't do all of that kind of stuff. But so I came into this really blind. And honestly, I did not even watch the trailer until after I watched the movie because, I don't know, sometimes trailers can just really throw you off, at least on some of the older ones. Sorry.
But, yeah, this one, I was not sure what to expect. I will say before we get into the trailer that I am giving Practical Magic a guilty rating. Now, that might surprise some of you, but the content that we have here definitely warrants a guilty rating.
Just because of some of the topics, some of the content that is done here, and it's just not necessarily the safest for younger audiences. And the content alone, it's. It. Okay, this amazes me. I run into parents.
I wouldn't say all the time, but often enough that, like, oh, I love practical magic. I watch it with my kids a dozen times or. And then they don't let their kid watch Harry Potter or vice versa. Where the kid they love. Their kids love Harry Potter. But they would dare let their kids watch practical magic. And I'm like, yeah, they would literally get that look from me. Just that.
Okay, because people like, oh, I don't want that stuff in my house, but I like Harry Potter.
And the difference is.
Yeah, exactly. But let's jump into the trailer and then of course, you. I will get my review to you as well.
And of course, you know, I'm never going to miss out on the score either, but let's jump over and check out this trailer together.
Some believe Maria Owens was a witch.
Others claim that Maria was just a monkey in luck.
Both were true.

[00:03:43] Speaker A: Most excellent.
[00:03:44] Speaker B: And love.
[00:03:45] Speaker A: Any man who wins the heart of an Owens woman is bound to end up six feet under.
[00:03:49] Speaker B: Was always tragic.
[00:03:51] Speaker C: Michael, look out.
It was an accident.
[00:03:54] Speaker A: But fate.
[00:03:55] Speaker C: It was a curse, wasn't it? He died because I loved him so much.
[00:03:59] Speaker B: Two sisters. One would play it safe.
[00:04:02] Speaker C: You spent all your energy just trying to fit in. But you're never gonna fit in, Sal. We're different.
[00:04:06] Speaker B: While the other would run wild.
[00:04:08] Speaker C: Hang onto your husband's girls.
[00:04:11] Speaker B: But now an accidental death.
[00:04:13] Speaker C: How much did you give him? I wasn't using a measuring cup. He was trying to kill you.
[00:04:17] Speaker B: Will become a practical matter.
[00:04:19] Speaker C: Please, God, please. If you get us out of this, I'll be good. I'll have babies. I'll go to the pk.
Jimmy.
[00:04:26] Speaker A: There's a cop downstairs and he's looking for Jimmy and he wants to talk to you. Is he cute?
[00:04:29] Speaker C: Yeah, in a very penal code sort of way. Yeah.
[00:04:34] Speaker A: Did you or your sister kill James Angelo?
[00:04:37] Speaker C: Oh, yeah, A couple of times. I know this is just really strange, but I can't lie to him. Oh, my God. Of course you can lie to him.
[00:04:45] Speaker A: It was self defense, wouldn't it?
[00:04:47] Speaker C: So does that take me as I am?
Jerry, Put your arms out and spin, spin, spin really, really fast. Well, that's what it's like to fall in love. What would you do, Joy? What wouldn't I do for the right guy? I'm a badge, I'm a lover. I'm a child. I'm a mother, I'm a sinner, I'm a saint. I do not give a sh.
You know the stuff that everyone's always whispering about me? The hex head spells jumping off the roof at Halloween. They're not entirely wrong. Don't. Witch Sally just came out.
[00:05:23] Speaker A: You're saying what I'm feeling is one of your stuff?
[00:05:26] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:05:27] Speaker A: It's not real. You know, all relationships have problems.
Ladies, pick up your brooms.
[00:05:34] Speaker C: Is this okay? That's all I have.
[00:05:44] Speaker B: Wow.
[00:05:46] Speaker A: I was promised that this, that my channel here and that my program is spoiler free. But there were a lot of spoilers in that trailer.
I.
I have just that flabbered my gasted or gassed my flowers, however you word that. But wow.
I was not expecting that. Literally, I had that. Sometimes I watch the review or the trailers before I start my show. Sometimes I. When I'm sitting here and watching it with you, that is the first time of me seeing. And that. That was the case right now. That is the first time that I saw that trailer.
And I'm just sitting here as I'm watching this thing going. And it. It's going to say that. And why is it saying that? Oh, wow.
Okay.
So if you couldn't guess, it's about some witches. Well, the.
The one that was showing in the tr. In the trailer in the beginning, her name was Maria and she was found to be cursed in love. And she was so determined to protect her heart that she cast a spell and that spell turned into a curse. Again, no. No worries. No spoilers. Trust me.
Absolutely not.
But what that did is basically anyone who fell in love, their spouse or significant other was doomed to a tragic fate.
And that's kind of what happened with the girls. With Sally and Jillian's parents is their dad. Their dad died tragically and their mom died of a broken heart. And so they went to go live with their aunts and their aunts raised them. And their aunts are, of course, witches. And they're. They come from a family of witches. So of course, you know, they are as well. But one is carefree wild child. The other one is play it safe, stay at home. Just you've got literally both ends of the spectrum on that one. You've got one that's the absolute wild child and one that is the absolute do gooder.
And it's amazing how different they were as they were growing up and how that kind of morphed into what became.
And now those. One that played it safe. Sally, she got married, she had a couple kids.
And unfortunately, that's just. You could see in the trailer. Again, that's not a spoiler because that's in the trailer. Something happened to her spouse and so she was left to be raising her kids and she went to turn to the aunt because it was a safe place.
Well, when her sister finds her that she's gotten a little bit too far out of control, she calls Sally for Sally for help.
And when Sally goes to help her there, that's when their whole life starts spiraling out of control.
They end up around somebody.
And I'm trying to think how to word this so I don't give anything away, but the person that Jilly is involved with ends up to be not a. Not very nice person.
And so they have to take care of matters and what that happens and the path that that sends them down just kind of sends the story spiraling a little bit.
It is a. I mean, there's so many bits and pieces from other moves that you can tell that there's inspirations from other movies here and it's entertaining. It's. There's. There's a couple little chuckle moments. I wouldn't say it's laugh out loud funny at any point. I don't know if it's supposed to be a comedy or not.
It. It's definitely a drama.
It deals with a lot of really deep things. You've got adultery, you've got murder, you've got magic, you've got just a bunch of different things going on. And of course the language.
So that is one of.
One of many of the reasons that I am giving this a guilty rating now. Practical magic. I'm going to surprise a few people on here. I'm actually only giving this movie a 5.75 out of 10 on the Deputy scale. There are so many flaws in this one. If you are paying attention to the story, you're not going to even notice a lot of them. I'm not going to point them out, especially for the people that love this movie. I'm sure you can find them if you really want to, but I just. I was getting hung up on like a lot of the little details of this and then just the story had so many holes in it as it's going.
If this is one of your favorite movies, wonderful. I'm not trying to change that at all. If you've never seen this and you want to go check out the new one, I don't know how much that's going to be necessary.
It some, some of the older movies, you have to see them before you watch the new one. And because I have not seen the new one yet, I can't say if that's the case because sometimes they stand on. Stand on their own and many times you need the the earlier ones to kind of make them make sense.
So I will be bringing you practical magic too very soon. I know I've been promising you Coyote versus Acme, but my husband works in transportation and he wants to do that one with me. And just our schedules have not just been able to jive together on that one, but so like I said, practical magic. I'm giving it a 5.75 out of 10 on the Deputy Deputy scale. It's a decent story. Significant flaws. Like I said, if this is one of your favorite movies, wonderful. If this is not, I I hope you come into it with bated breath at least, just so you at least come prepared that it may not be what you expect it to be.
Now. I of course I'm not judging it based on some of the graphics and the special effects and things that were done. Surprisingly they were done quite considering in 1998 we didn't have a lot of the special effects that we have today and we didn't have the technology.
So I'm not judging it at all based on that, just purely based on the story and some plot holes and just some different things going on there.
