Episode Transcript
[00:00:00] Speaker A: Hello, everybody. Welcome back to Movie Deputy Reviews. And I am obviously a little rusty at this as I haven't done this in about two months.
If you are curious about my hiatus, go check out my life renewal video that I posted a couple days ago.
That'll kind of explain a lot. And if you're curious what movie we're talking about today, the title, meta, Give It Away, or a poster are all good giveaways of which one we're talking about today. Now, why am I choosing this one to come back on?
Well, obviously it's a huge movie. Obviously it was a huge. It still is a huge movie as it's in the theaters and it came out at the time I got really sick and ended up in the hospital. So I actually didn't get around to watching this until last week. I know that's really sad, but if you have been a follower of Movie Deputy Reviews for very long, you know that I take notes on my phone when I am watching the MOV movies and it's a little difficult to do that. Again, here's all the notes I did during Brand New Day.
Normally I take a lot more notes than that, but I'm just kind of trying to get back in the swing of things and I just realized I forgot my phone on silence. I'm going to correct that right now. There we go. That would have been really distracting if that would have gone off.
But why are we choosing Spider man to come back on? Well, it is.
I'm sorry, it's iconic. I mean, the whole Marvel superheroes thing, the Tom. I mean, we've seen Spider man as three different guys. We've seen Tobey Maguire, we've seen Andrew Garfield, and now we have Tom Holland.
And do you have a favorite Spider Man? I would love for you to reach out on the socials or just reach out to me directly. I would love to know who your favorite Spider man is. I might even put a poll on that on our YouTube channel here.
You may have noticed I look a little bit different just wearing one of my kitty cat shirts today. As you as many of you know, I am a crazy cat lady and proud of it. I have seven cats and they are my children.
I mean, I've got a grown child as well, but these are my kitties, are my babies. And so I'm either wearing a deputy shirt or a kitty cat shirt. A lot of my ones say paws need claws and this one says paws unite until no more cats are declawed.
That's a big thing that is really important to me. And so I'm a bit of a superhero myself, being that I'm going to always fight until we end declawing on kitty cats.
But back to the movie. We're going to jump into the trailer here. Before I get into a whole lot of the review on this one, I'm going to give away. Don't worry, no spoilers ever. But I'm giving Spider Man Brand New Day a tentative innocent rating. There's a few near swears and a little bit of violence, but nothing overly so or nothing like intense or scary. So I am giving Spider Man Brand New Day a tentative innocent rating on that. But let's jump into the trailer and check out maybe why.
I can't believe our first hit.
[00:03:03] Speaker B: Mit.
Mj, Come on. Pretend like you're not the happiest you've ever been in your entire life.
I can't. I knew it.
[00:03:19] Speaker A: Now, you may be wondering why he is taking that so hard. Well, you'd have to go back to the last Spider man movie that we saw that in order to protect everybody. Don't worry, this is no spoilers here. No spoilers ever. But basically he had to make sure that the world forgot about him with the help of Dr. Strange.
And so nobody knows who. I mean, everybody knows Spider man, but nobody knows that Peter Parker is Spider Man. And so that's why this is such a difficult thing for him to watch.
And then also you can't help but see some of the emotion considering Tom Holland and Zendaya are married in real life. And so hearing some of that and seeing some of the scenes in this movie, it kind of gives it a little bit more perspective on that.
[00:04:11] Speaker C: Hi, my name is Peter Parker.
You don't remember me, but we used to know each other.
Something bad was gonna happen. And the only way to stop it was to make everyone forget about me.
[00:04:24] Speaker A: That's what I was talking about.
[00:04:27] Speaker C: Because I'm not just Peter Parker.
I'm Spider Man.
[00:04:35] Speaker B: What the hell, Frank? You just hit me with a van.
[00:04:38] Speaker C: Put your weapon.
Suit yourself,
[00:04:45] Speaker D: Mother.
[00:04:47] Speaker B: Go.
[00:04:47] Speaker A: See, that's one of the things I'm talking about. There is. It's like. Like a near swear, but not. Not quite. Not quite.
[00:04:54] Speaker B: Oh,
[00:04:57] Speaker C: and sometimes Spider man has to do the hard thing, even if it breaks. Peter Parker'.
What is happening to me.
[00:05:20] Speaker B: Now?
[00:05:20] Speaker A: Not giving anything away here, but in the one of the last Spider man movies we saw all the. The spider mans together. And as you know, Toby just kind of goes like this with his wrist, can shoot the webs, but with Andrew Garfield's Spider man and Tom Holland's Spider Man. They have to have the little mechanics and stuff. And I'm not giving anything away here, but this Peter, Tom Holland's Peter, is evolving in an entirely different way.
[00:05:48] Speaker C: Excuse me, Dr. Banner. I need your help.
[00:05:50] Speaker D: What do you say?
DNA is mutating.
[00:05:56] Speaker C: It would be enormously dangerous.
[00:06:01] Speaker D: Spiders have three life cycles.
When between cycles, it can leave the spider vulnerable to threats.
[00:06:12] Speaker A: We are faced with a danger that we can't control, one we can't even see.
[00:06:18] Speaker D: Stay out of my way.
[00:06:22] Speaker A: You losing it, kid.
[00:06:25] Speaker D: And for those spiders who make it through, it amounts to a kind of.
Rebirth.
[00:06:43] Speaker A: Nice flowers.
[00:06:44] Speaker C: Oh, they're a housewarming gift.
[00:06:46] Speaker A: I'm mj.
[00:06:47] Speaker C: I'm just a neighbor from across the hall.
[00:06:50] Speaker A: Friendly neighbor.
And that's where Tapabot loses it. Or Peter, as I should say.
Because as we all know, the. One of the slogans for Spider man is the friendly neighborhood Spider Man. So when she says friendly neighbor, it's. I'm not sure if that was an ad lib moment or what, but that was. It's. That was epic.
And as you see, this movie came back, came out back on July 31st.
[00:07:17] Speaker B: Wow.
[00:07:18] Speaker A: So, yeah, I was actually still very much recovering from the hospital when all this was going on.
Yeah, I had been in the hospital for almost five days. And they. I probably advised that I maybe to go to a rehab facility or something. Not like. Not like drug rehab or whatever, but one of those things where you just have more time to recover and stuff like that. Because my body was literally shutting down. And I'm still recovering from all of this and still have about the energy of a sloth most days.
But I'm getting better slowly and so I'm going the right direction. But back to the movie. Now you've probably. Unless you've been living under a rock, which I'm sure a lot of you have, because social media is just crazy nowadays.
But the whole thing with Spider man is what was shown in the trailer is a lot of the movie, but it's not the main focus of the movie. Now you may be thinking it's a Spider man movie, so shouldn't the focus of the movie be Spider Man?
And it kind of is. Now that may be confusing. All the Spider man movies up to date have been huge Spider man movies. This one is a drama with Spider Man.
Now is that confusing? I don't mean it to be.
Spider man is a main character in the movie, but he's not the only main character because Jean Grey is the other main character. Now, you may be wondering, who is that? Well, if you are familiar with X Men, you know who Jean is. If you are not familiar with the X Men, then Jean Grey's identity may be a little stupefying.
But here is Peter, and he is basically all alone in the world. He doesn't have Aunt May anymore, and he does not have the love of his life because he had to make her forget.
But the thing is, he's also dealing with some other things that are happening in the city because of the chaos that Jean Grey is causing, because she is trying to get to someone or something that is very important to her.
Now, in the process of this, it puts him literally in mortal danger. Now, you know me. No spoilers ever. But Jean Grey is.
How do I put this?
She is essential to what happens next.
Now, how that all plays out may surprise you, but like I said, most Spider man movies are Spider man movies. This one is very much a drama with Spider Man. We are seeing different things with Spider man that we've never really seen before with any of the Spider man characters. We are seeing an evolution as his body adapts. And as you saw in the trailer, there's Bruce Banner. Well, what happened to Bruce Banner when he was exposed to the gamma radiation? He became the Hulk. Well, what is happening to Peter with this arachnid stuff that's going on in his system? Now, what you're thinking, wait, but Toby was bit.
Toby's Peter Man. Peter, Peter Man. Toby's Spider man was bit by the spider, hence becoming Spider Man.
And you're thinking, wait, when did that happen with Tom's Spider Man?
Well, there's a lot of holes in this thing, but it doesn't take away from the story. But there's certain plot holes that I'm hoping that will be answered with future things. But what's going on here is it's an evolution of Spider man into something completely different. Now, if you see this, whether you saw this in the theaters, whether you're going to watch this at home, whether or not you even plan to watch this, people sticking through the credits are thinking, okay, where's the bonus scene?
And it almost seems like there isn't one. It goes all the way through the credits. The screen goes dark through the very end, and then we see something electronic. I'm not going to give away what it is, but it hints that there's maybe something more.
We know there's going to be more Spider Mans coming, but something more to the story that we don't necessarily realize yet, and this is pure conjecture on my part, but I think it's connected to Doomsday. At least that would be my guess on that.
I think one of the coolest parts of this is if you do see this, whether you see this at home in the theater, make sure to catch the very beginning part, because in the beginning of all Marvel movies, you see the different things with the Marvel letters and stu appearing, and it's always got different things of the different characters and different scenes from the different movies.
Spider Man, Brand New Day. The intro is entirely Spider Man.
That's the first time I've ever seen that done in any movie. I mean, it's. Some of the other ones have hinted at it a little bit, but where they've still introduced other characters into that very intro part. This one is entirely Spider man, and that makes it really cool. Now, there had to have been a reason that they do this, right? And I think it has to do with the little secret bonus thing at the very end of the movie.
So you may be wondering what I'm talking about score wise on this one or where I'm at score wise.
And I really debated on this one because it's really good. There are parts of this that I would probably easily say a seven and a half, but there's parts of it that I don't know. It almost don't feel like a superhero movie. It almost feels more like a drama. And so I'm like, okay, sixes.
But I don't want to go that low. No, I don't want to go, like, low sixes. At least I ended up coming in with Spider Man Brand New day at a 6.75 out of 10 on the Deputy scale.
Now, if you're not familiar with the Deputy scale, that doesn't equate to, like, a 67% on, like, the Tomatometer.
Yeah, we don't count that. But the Deputy scale is entirely unique. You can check out on our Movie Deputy channel. I've got a video explaining it. Or you can go to the about me page on moviedebity.com and see our full rating list. And it's something that I created myself, and that's how I score movies. So just because it's a 6.75 does not equate to a percentage. It has some. It's completely on its own.
So what do you think of the first review since I've been back? I don't, of course. No spoilers ever. And I hope I created enough intrigue that this is one that you're going to want to go see. Because if you are a Marvel fan, you are not going to want to miss this. Because there are key points to this that are going to tie in past, present, future Spider man movies. They're going to tie in the X Men movies. They're going to tie in the Avengers.
There's. There's Easter eggs throughout this thing. I could probably do a whole show just based on the Easter eggs alone, but I don't know.
[00:14:12] Speaker B: We'll.
[00:14:12] Speaker A: We'll see. We'll see. And I will be back. I'm actually going to be back with my husband pretty soon for another review of the Coyote vs. Acme movie. We went to go see that together, and Wiley is one of his favorite characters, so I want him to join me on that review. I think that'll be a lot of fun.
But until then, I hope you've had as much fun here as I have. If you haven't done so already, please like and subscribe. Just get the latest and the Greatest Movie Deputy content because I am coming back slowly but surely. And this is what you can count on are reviews like this. Spoiler free, but just enough information to kind of help you out to decide if this is one that you want to see and whether or not it's age appropriate. Hence the whole innocent guilty rating. And then of course, the score. So I hope that you score well in your life every day. I am working on doing that as well. And until later, bye.
