[00:00:00] Speaker A: Hello, my friends, and welcome back to Movie Deputy Reviews, where I know I've had a lot of people on their edges of their seats or on their phones. I should say waiting for the notification that this review went live. And I apologize, I didn't have it up this morning. I wasn't feeling very well. As many of you know, I'm dealing with some health conditions that are not just the average of every ordinary cancer sucks and just some other stuff that I've got going on. But I don't want to focus on that. I want to focus on the movie. I saw this last night and I just like with movies that are based off books and this one is a movie based off a TV show.
Admittedly I've never watched the show. I firmly believe that the movie should be able to stand on their own, even without like having knowledge of the TV show or anything like that. Now, I will say I have very strong opinions about one thing in this, and I've had strong opinions ever since this was first announced. And we first saw Grogu everywhere, but before we knew that it was Grogu. I mean, what, what kind of name is Grogu? But then again, it's Star Wars. Look at the names that we have there.
But I will forever be Team Baby Yoda.
Now, not because it's just a different thing, but I like the name Baby Yoda a lot better than Grogu.
That's just a personal thing.
So Team Baby Yoda, Team Grogu. Obviously it's the same creature either way, but which one are you? Are you Team Baby Yoda? Are you Team Grogu? No. Like I said, I will forever be Team Baby Yoda. Even though I know his name is Grogu, he is honestly my favorite part of this movie. I. I fell in love as soon as I first saw this saying for the first time. And I had talked to other random people before I went to see this just like over the last couple weeks, and I was like, okay, is this like Baby Yoda, like way back when? Or like, what is this? And a lot of people are like, yeah, this is Yoda. It's like, okay. So I started doing a little bit of my own research. I'm like, there's just some stuff in this that just doesn't fit. Well, this is actually a long time after Yoda died. So this is a completely separate creature. It's part of the same alien race that Yoda was, obviously. I mean, it's the same type of alien, but this is a completely different creature. Than Yoda. So I just. A little bit of Google search, a little bit of just kind of verifying some information a few different places. Yeah, this is not Yoda. So if that's something that you were curious about, I hope that that helps clear that up a little bit.
Now, honestly, he was my favorite character in this entire movie. I will say it very apparent. The reason I kind of keep looking over is a lot of, you know, I take notes on my phone. This is all the notes that I took during the movie last night. And I will say before we. And we're going to get into the trailer and stuff here just a second too. So I'm not forgetting that. But you could definitely tell pieces of this movie that were inspired from other movies.
A hundred percent. You could tell this is part of the Disney franchise.
There's just little things in this story that are clear inspirations from Disney that you just can't get away from.
There are. There's one part of the movie where it. They definitely took some in for inspiration from Gremlins. You'll. You'll understand when you watch it.
There are clear inspirations, maybe thought processes that they got from Indiana Jones and a little bit from how to Train your Dragon did. Were these intentional references? I don't know.
But there are very clear references in this that you can see that were at least inspired by some of these other movies.
Now you may be thinking, okay, you've got Disney, you've got Indiana Jones, you got Gremlins, you got how to Train youn Dragon, and it's a Star wars movie.
I was kind of thinking the same thing.
Now, this movie is rated PG13.
Honestly, I'm giving it an innocent rating. I. There was nothing over the top in this one. There's no over the top language. There's no over the top violence. Even some of the violence that you see, it's not.
It.
It's nothing. That's just what that you would go like this to your kid's eyes or anything like that.
So I am giving Mandalorian and Grogu an innocent rating even because some of the violent scenes are not as bad as what you'd think.
And it's entertaining and it's action packed.
But before we get too far into the details, you know me, no spoilers ever.
Let's check out the trailer together.
[00:05:14] Speaker B: Hey, never touch the buttons.
[00:05:18] Speaker A: Now that line made many people in the theater, including myself, chuckle. Because whenever you say don't push the buttons, what do you want to do? You want to push the buttons?
And Grogu wants to push the buttons. So cute.
[00:05:40] Speaker B: I can use some information.
[00:05:42] Speaker A: Whoa.
[00:05:42] Speaker B: For this price, I'll tell you whatever you want. I'm looking for a hut close for the night. Thank you.
Gangsters, more criminals.
[00:05:52] Speaker A: Long live the Empire.
[00:05:55] Speaker B: Take out every bad guy in your deck of cards.
[00:06:05] Speaker A: This isn't about revenge.
Now, I have to cut into this here just for a second. Sigourney Weaver, synonymous with Alien movies. So it just makes sense that, I mean, Star wars wanted her for this, but she had one requirement.
I mean, she had obviously other things, but there was one make or break thing to her contract is initially in her contract, she didn't have any scenes with Grogu with Baby Yoda. And she said that that was one thing that she would. That, I mean, it was a make or break for her is if they wanted her to do this movie, she had to at least have a scene with him. And I kind of thought that was absolutely adorable.
It's about preventing another war.
Now, I'm gonna interrupt the trailer again here.
I. As cute as this movie is, there were definite ideas in this movie that borderline on the Woke idea, but they don't make it the focus.
But there are comments and there's dialogue that kind of follow that Woke agenda a little bit. But amazingly, that is not the main focus of the movie. I was glad to see that, even though that it's in there, that it wasn't made to be like a main piece of the movie.
So it would appreciate if they just left it out entirely. But it's Hollywood, so
[00:07:38] Speaker B: strap in.
[00:07:46] Speaker A: He will suffer
[00:07:49] Speaker B: and then it will be his turn.
Before going into harm's way, check your armor.
The kid will live centuries beyond me.
I won't always be around to protect him.
Are you scared?
You should be.
Do we run or do we fight?
Unlike this kid.
What are you waiting for?
Save the rest for after dinner.
[00:08:56] Speaker A: So here we are, back from that. As you can tell, I interrupted that a few points just to make some commentary on that.
But that really kind of captures the heart of this. Like, I guess I came into this not knowing anything really about Mandalorian and who Grogu was, except for Baby Yoda type thing. And like I said, my research on that proved it wasn't actually Baby Yoda. But he's a baby. Same creature that Yoda is.
And just I was like, okay, who is this Mandalorian? And I very quickly was able to determine based on the movie, that he is a bounty hunter. And so he is rewarded for bringing These people in for questioning or for other things. And the thing is, like, typical bounty hunters, bring them in dead or alive. And that's kind of the thing he does here, too. Don't. Don't spoilers there. So I'm not going to give away any details on that, but you may be thinking, okay, but I saw, like, Jabba the Hut. No, you didn't actually see Job. You saw some of his family members.
And that's one of the main focuses of this movie is it's. Mandalorian has to go and trying to think how to word this without giving anything away.
One of the tickets that he has to go basically capture and bring back has to do with a relative of Jabbas.
Now, how this relative, when you. If you are familiar at all with the Star wars universe, you know that Jabba the Hutt was a really bad guy.
I mean, just there's. There's no getting around that. But this relative of his is going to surprise you there.
He's the. The relative is actually one of the good guys in this movie. Now, how is that person related? That you're gonna have to wait and find out. And who that person is, you're gonna have to find out in the movie, because I won't give that away.
But so the whole thing with this, the Mandalorian Grogu story is they have to go and they have to capture this person and bring them back.
But it's a lot more complicated than that because he thinks he's going after this person and he ends up finding that somebody else associated with this person is a lot higher value target. And so the story kind of goes a little off the rails, a little from at least the direction you think it's going to go. But it still maintains its continuity and it maintains the flow of the story, and you're just in awe. I mean, my pause there, if you're watching the YouTube video, you can see I'm like going, like, staring at the screen, just like an almost in awe struck, just going, wondering what's going to happen next. It's like it was just one thing after another after another, but it was easy to follow.
It was entertaining, which kind of surprised me a little bit. Some of the Star wars movies have been really great. I mean, my personal favorite of all time is Empire.
Some of them have been really sucky. I mean, look what they did with Solo. I mean, don't. Yeah, let's not get me started on that. So I came into this one with very tempered expectations because not knowing anything about the story, not knowing anything about who this Mandalorian character was or who Grogu was specifically, and not understanding really anything about the rest of this.
But after watching this and everything, and like I said, it's entertaining. If you are a Star wars fan, you do not want to miss this at all.
But like I said, you've got to pay attention to the details. So it's just over two hours long. So I. There's not really any good point to have to get up and go to the bathroom. So if you got to go, go beforehand if you can help it.
There's just something about this one. I will probably watch it again. I probably won't watch it in the theaters, but when it comes out on Disney plus, I'll probably watch it again. My husband didn't go with me last night, but when this comes out, I would re watch it again with him. Absolutely.
So I've already said I'm going to give this an innocent reading. But you're probably wondering where I'm at on the score.
I'm gonna probably surprise a few of you with the score where I'm at with this. But there were a few minor continuity errors, a few minor. Just little things and just some stuff that my brain got stuck on. Stuff I tend to notice, things that not a lot of other people notice. And I don't want to necessarily reveal all of the little things to you because I don't want to distract. If you're like, catching that part of the movie, I don't want you thinking about what I'm saying instead of what's going on in the movie.
But score wise, like I said, I'm going to surprise. Probably surprise a few people here. I'm giving Mandalorian and Grogu a 6.5 out of 10 on the Deputy scale.
It's definitely watchable. It's a good story. There are definitely some flaws, but it is entertaining and it is fun.
And by all means, this is probably my favorite Star wars character of all time, to the point where I even took a picture with like a little dolls.
Not he's not an action figure, but a little thing they had at the theater. I don't know if we can show that real well.
The camera's not gonna pick up on that real grade. But I did that last night at the theater and then I at Mark. I went to America's theaters last night and I got the at. At. And I also got this, the popcorn bucket with Grogu. So if you've had a chance to see those. Those are in my theater now, so I couldn't wait to bring those home. Those are.
But I know some of the other Star wars merch and stuff like that that's available. Some of the other theaters is really awesome too. If you want to feel free to share pictures on social media, tag Movie Deputy or Movie Deputy Reviews, just use the hashtag and you can easily find me on that. And I would love to share some photos if I get enough submissions that tag me on those.
But as always, I hope that this helps if this is one that you've been wanting to see and you're maybe worried that maybe they went too far.
Ultra Woke with a lot of stuff. Like I said, there are definitely some Woke commentary pieces in this, but they don't make it a major piece of the story. They don't sir. They don't center the story around the wokeness.
And honestly, unless you're really paying attention, you'd probably even miss a couple of them.
So but like I said, if you're just wanting to go to be entertained, if you're a Star wars fan, you are going to get a lot out of this.
So I hope this helps. And as always, this is an adventure, especially when you're here along with the movie Deputy.
