Episode Transcript
[00:00:00] Good afternoon and welcome back. I told you I was going to be back with another episode of Movie depthy podcasts because if you caught this morning's show, you already know the movie that we're going to be talking about. And if not, I hope you kind of go back and check it out. But I am going to let you know too that we are talking about the Shift movie that just opened today, the one that is done by Angel Studios. This one is a continuation of an idea that came out in 2017, a movie by the same title with the same basic premise. But when they turned the short movie into the full length movie, some changes were made. And some people might think those changes are for the better, some people might not. But I'm going to kind of delve into some of that. And of course, no spoilers ever. Never having to worry about any spoilers here on Movie Deputy because I absolutely despise them. So you will not have spoilers here just because that's just the way I do it. Maybe not for everybody, but I do hope for my audience, they appreciate the fact that I bring movies like that and the fact that I address movies like this because Hollywood tries to silence movies like this a lot of the time and this was no different. Angel Studios did the funding for this with basically crowdfunding type sources and that's what they did with the original one as well. But trying to turn a short into a full length feature film, that takes some doing and that takes some insight and that takes some inspiration.
[00:01:40] There were some cast changes, don't worry, not a spoiler. I mean, you can find that basic information on IMDb that some people might agree with, other people might not. I think it worked for what they did here, but at the same time, it's like if you're going to continue a story, it's like, okay, why didn't they stay with the same people? And there was a bit of a Q and A on kind of an early screening of this a couple of days ago and I had gone to that too. And then I watched it again last night because I'm like, okay, am I being too harsh on this? It's like sometimes if I even have to second guess, it's like, okay, am I digging too deeply into this? Am I looking too closely at it? Am I trying to nitpick it? And after watching it the second time, I was like, no I'm not. Because it's like, okay, I gave the original one the short. I gave it a seven out of ten on the Deputy scale. And you may think, oh, wow, that's great. And yes, that is a great score, especially for this type of story. And not that it deserves any less than that at all, but I also gave it a guilty rating just because of the type of the content and the tone of the story. And honestly, this one got a guilty rating as well as for the score. Don't jump to conclusions yet, but I am going to make you wait till the end before I tell you the score that I gave to the full version of The Shift. Now, I will say with their cast redesign, things that they did with this, they did so with a purpose. And if you were lucky enough to catch that pre screening thing with the Q A, with some of the cast, they explained a little bit about that. And one of the reasons that they chose some of the people to play some of the roles that they did was because of those people's personal stances with their own personal faith. The director for this, he had an idea, and it wasn't just an idea. He made it come to fruition. And in doing so, it kind of takes us into a Dystopian type Sci-Fi future. And the whole Shift thing that's even taking place, it's basically transporting from one universe to another. And don't worry, that's not spoilers either. But there's a search for somebody going on. And yes, we still see Kevin, we still see some of the same people in this one, Satan does. Back in the short back in 2017 in the diner, satan identified himself as Satan. Here that does not happen.
[00:04:21] Satan is never officially referred to as Satan. Throughout this movie is called The Benefactor. And just in one other scene, other than that, he refers to himself as Lucifer. So, I mean, that tells you who you're obviously we're talking about here. But almost like what he's doing, he's almost making it trying to sound like he is trying to help people. And if you at all know biblical history or anything like that and I'm just referring to the regular Bible. I'm not talking about different religions and stuff and how their interpretation of God and Satan and stuff like that is, but I'm just talking the basic Bible that a lot of people around the world are familiar with and hopefully more people will become familiar with because it's an interesting book of information. Is it historical? A lot of people say yes. There's also a lot of people that say no.
[00:05:17] Is it 100% accurate? Beginning to cover again, there's a lot of defining factors. I'm going to get a lot of these questions and I get this a lot of like, what is my personal stance on this? I try not to go into a whole lot of that just because it really kind of stirs up and makes people wondering my stance on objectifying and reviewing movies like this. But if you look back at some other Christian titles that I've done, it's like I've kind of been all over the board on my scores because I try to look at these stories not just as biblical stories. This story is basically supposed to be a retelling of the story of Job, of all of the trials and tribulations and everything that he went through because of his faith and what it all led to in the end. That's kind of what they're trying to tell here in kind of a roundabout, unusual way. But Kevin just really kind of gets lost a little bit on this thing because somebody that is very close to him gets taken away. But the thing is, they're not the ones that get taken away. He is. And so he's desperately trying to find his way home. I almost couldn't help but leap back to the whole thing of the concept of Quantum Leap where all he wants to do is get back home and he has to do all these other things to get back home. But in this he doesn't have to make right what once went wrong and all that kind of stuff, like in Quantum Leap, but he does have to do something to have any chance of getting back home. And one of the ways that he's able to do this is through some friends that he has and in these different worlds that he's traveling to. And specifically this one where he ends up that most of the movie takes place in. There's no Bibles in this world and he wants to share the Word and he wants to share his faith with people. And how he does so puts a target on his back and tries to stop him from what he's trying to accomplish. And like I said, don't worry. I'm not giving you any spoilers here or anything even close to spoilers here. But there's one important message in this movie that really gets pounded home and not necessarily in an in your face way, but more of just a way that just tries to connect with people and tries to connect with the audience. I do think that they did a good job with this unfortunate some of the content, as the movie is told.
[00:07:50] I really like movies like this, when they draw you in and you feel like you're a part of the story. This is a movie that you know you're watching a movie.
[00:08:02] It's an amazing story to watch, an amazing story to unfold. But at times it's like you lose the point of the focus. You lose that you're not right there in the story. It's like you get lost a little bit along the way. Now, I'm not doing that in a way of saying don't go see this movie. Not in the least. But some of the biggest things that he really focuses in this story. And he doesn't just focus this with Kevin, the main character, but he focuses this with other people, too. But that saying to themselves, and I'll even say this out loud because we all need to remind ourselves of this from time to time is I am not the worst things that I've done.
[00:08:44] And there's somebody out there, maybe it's you, that needs to hear that. I want you to repeat those words. I am not the worst things that I've done.
[00:08:54] Come on, say it with me.
[00:08:57] I am not the worst things that I've done.
[00:09:02] Redemption is so amazing. And like I said, I want you to repeat that to yourself. If you're having a hard day and you're going through a hard time, repeat that to yourself. I am not the worst things that I've done. And then there was also another line in this movie that for me, it hit really close to home. And that's another really long story, but I'll share it with you. Not the story, but the line is, this is not my world, but this is my home. Now, that will make more sense as the movie goes on and as you experience this, because this is not the kind of movie that you just watch. This is the kind of movie that you experience. This is the kind of movie that you will take with you long after the credits are done. Now, what will happen? Will Kevin get back to somebody that's really close to him? Will he be able to find his way home?
[00:09:48] Will the devil win? I mean, it's Angel Studios, so I kind of think you know the answer to that one. Obviously, no spoilers, but you can kind of guess the direction it goes in. I will say that the ending is not what you expect.
[00:10:03] If you are expecting just a typical happy ending, everything goes back to normal. Again, not going to spoil anything, but let's just say it's not going to be what you expect.
[00:10:14] Does that mean it's not a happy ending? No. Does that mean it's a sad ending? No.
[00:10:19] Again, no spoilers. Never ever.
[00:10:23] But of course, like I said, I gave this a guilty rating on the deputy scale, but the score that I actually gave this new version of The Shift was a 6.25 out of ten on the deputy scale. Now, you may be wondering why my score went down. Well, it's because of like I said, you fall out of the whole idea of what's going on, because just some of the things that play out and then you'll get to see miracles happening on screen, and you're going to get to see just incredible things of faith and incredible things of you'll have goosebumps. You'll get tears, you'll smile, you'll cry.
[00:11:05] It takes you all along the gamut of things. And that's really the point with this story, is connecting with you on a much deeper level. And they started by doing that back in 2017 with that short, it gave us the premise of this idea. Was the execution of this idea done to I don't even know. I'm trying to think of the right words. That's one thing about doing these just I can't quite say live because I just recorded this a few minutes ago, but at least from where you're listening to it, I didn't record this myself a few minutes ago as I'm recording this, like right now. And I've gotten to the point I'm sure you've probably picked up on other episodes that I don't edit these anymore.
[00:11:49] If you occasionally hear the occasional I don't edit any of that stuff out anymore. The only thing I edit out is if I accidentally flub and say something, a curse word that I shouldn't, which of course I wouldn't even be doing with on this movie. But yeah, these episodes are completely unedited for like 99% of the content that I have. And that's really hard to do because if I flub, I just kind of keep on going because I promise to be just me and the lamb is just me.
[00:12:20] But like I said, this is one of those stories that if you are devout in your faith, this is going to be one that you're going to want to check out. If you're not so devout in your faith, you may not appreciate this as much, but Angel Studios once again is doing the Pay it Forward program and they are inviting people to go online to Angelstudios.com and to really check this out. Because if you want to go see this movie and you can't afford to go see this movie, you can go on there and you can request free tickets to go see this movie. Or if you are somebody that wants to pay it forward and you want to sponsor somebody's tickets, you can go on there and you can prepay for somebody's tickets ahead of time. And there's a bonus to that. If you pay it forward and you buy one ticket for somebody else, you get to see a special bonus scene that was not released in the theaters, and it's not going to be released anywhere in the theaters with this. I'm sure it'll probably be on a DVD or Blu ray on this at some point. But if you want to catch that bonus scene that's going to maybe explain a few of the questions that aren't answered on here, you're going to have to pay it forward for somebody else if you want to check it out. Now, like I said, if you don't have the money to do so, do not feel bad about that because Angel Studios knows that everybody has hard times, whether they want to admit it or not. Everybody struggles. It may not be with the same thing, same struggle with different people, but everybody struggles. So like I said, if you want to do that, this is one thing that Angel Studios has done so well. They did Sound of Freedom, they've done after Death, and now, of course, they have done this shift. I really hope that you get a chance to go check this one out. Like I said, I did score it a bit lower than I did the original, but I hope that I have thoroughly explained why. And if you have any further questions or anything for me, just let me know. Reach out to me, contact me. But I hope that you are enjoying this as much as I am.
[00:14:27] Please, you know what to do if you are enjoying this movie, deputy content and you never want to miss an episode. Like I said, you'd know what to do. Trying not to say those words anymore, and it's hard to remind myself not to do, but I'm just a goof. But I have just got about a million more things to do today. And of course I have to get the movies prepped for you for tomorrow. Am I going to tell you which one it is? You're going to have to come back and find out. But until next time, I can't wait to talk to you again soon. Bye.
